Four Pakistani Soldiers Killed In Taliban Attack In Northwest Pakistan

Four Pakistani soldiers were killed and seven others injured on Wednesday when Taliban terrorists attacked two border checkpoints located near the Afghanistan border in the restive northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province's Chitral district.

"On September 6, a large group of terrorists equipped with the latest weapons attacked two Pakistani military posts located closer to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in the general area of Kalash, District Chitral," news agency PTI said, citing a statement by Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The soldiers were killed during the exchange of fire, and efforts were underway to clear the area of any remaining terrorists.

A video circulating on the internet claims to show the captured soldiers of Pakistan's Special Service Group kneeling before Taliban fighters. The video was shared with a caption that reads, "Pakistan Army SSG troops captured by TTP in Chitral on Youm-e-Difa Day."

However, NDTV cannot verify the authenticity of the clips.

The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for both the attacks on the Ostai security checkpoint and the Janjeerat Koh checkpoint in the Chitral district.

While the attack at the Ostai security checkpoint left two soldiers dead, two more were killed and four others injured in the attack on the Janjereet checkpoint, as per the PTI report.

The injured were shifted to Chitral Scouts Hospital. Later, one of the critically injured was airlifted to Combined Military Hospitals in Peshawar.

ISPR said the security forces of Pakistan are determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism, and that the "sacrifices of our soldiers further strengthen our resolve".

Kaun Banega Crorepati 15: This Rs 7 Crore Question Made A Contestant Quit

Jaskaran Singh, a student from Punjab, etched history by becoming the first crorepati of Amitabh Bachchan's game show Kaun Banega Crorepati 15. The 21-year-old also attempted the final Rs 7 crore question but then he decided to quit the game and take home Rs 1 crore.

So what was the Rs 7 crore question asked by Amitabh Bachchan on the show?

The question:

“According to Padma Purana, which king had to live as a tiger for a hundred years due to a deer's curse?”

The options were: A: Kshemadhurti, B: Dharmadatta, C: Mitadhvaja and D: Prabhanjana.

The right option that would have made Jaskaran Singh win Rs 7 crore was D: Prabhanjana.

For the Rs 1 crore question, Mr Jaskaran had used the double-debt lifeline. And, the moment he gave the right answer, a super happy Big B hugged Mr Jaskaran.

Since Mr Jaskaran's big win, a promo of the episode is making rounds on the Internet. The clip was shared by the makers on Instagram.

The promo also introduced Mr Jaskaran to the world. He comes from Khalara village in Punjab's Tarn Taran district. The area is so secluded that Mr Jaskaran had to travel 4 hours every day to reach his college. Mr Jaskaran is one of the few who were able to complete their graduation in the village.

Mr Jaskaran, in the video, said that he had been trying to participate in Kaun Banega Crorepati for the last four years.

Right now, he is preparing for the UPSC entrance exam and will give his first attempt next year.

"Shopping Like A Billionaire": This Chinese App Is Now Overtaking Amazon

If you spend much time online you've probably seen one of Temu's colourful ads – punctuated by its catchy tagline: “shopping like a billionaire”.

Temu specialises in selling various everyday items, including clothing, toys and household goods, for extremely low prices. Shanghai-based company PDD Holdings launched the online marketplace late last year (initially in the United States) to cater to overseas customers.

Since then, Temu's reach has skyrocketed. The total value of products sold went from US$3 million in September last year, to US$400 million in April. At the time of publishing this article, Temu was the most popular free iPhone app in the US, United Kingdom, Australia and Germany.

Why has Temu been such a massive success? It's safe to say the platform has some winning strategies that keep consumers coming back. But beyond that, similar to other e-commerce platforms, using it isn't entirely risk- or guilt-free. Here are some things to consider if you're thinking of giving it a shot.

What are Temu's secrets to success?

1. Value

Many Australians might associate “made in China” with cheap price tags and low quality. However, Temu's consumers are beginning to view it as offering affordable products that do not necessarily compromise on quality. In some cases, 10-20 products will only set you back US$20-30.

Temu claims it can offer these prices as a result of cutting out the middlemen in the supply chain. While the manufacturers provide the product details and the products themselves, Temu handles everything else – from customs processing to international shipping. This streamlining helps reduce unit costs.

Nonetheless, achieving such value doesn't come without a cost. Concerns are rising that Temu and its suppliers may be operating at a loss. However, it's common for startups to experience negative cash flow in their initial years due to heavy marketing investments, including offers of competitive prices and marketing campaigns – all of which is done to build brand awareness and gain acceptance.

This is especially true in the fast-paced e-commerce sector, where success and failure happen swiftly. Temu and its suppliers, who are mainly from Temu's sister e-commerce platform Pinduoduo, are likely aware of this dynamic.

2. An effective marketing strategy

Unlike other e-commerce platforms that focus on functional benefits such as saving money, Temu caters to consumers' emotional needs. It overlays the shopping experience with the idea of “shopping like a billionaire” – which also aligns with its value-based strategy.

Temu entered the market at a time when consumers were grappling with global inflation, leading them to seek “value”. In the first month after its launch in the US, Temu invested some US$200 million in advertising and planned a US$2 billion budget for the year.

Given China's leadership in live-streaming influencer marketing, Temu is now recruiting social media influencers, suggesting it might leverage its Chinese expertise to explore a social-commerce strategy. Social commerce harnesses a sense of “friendship” conveyed by influencers, making the online shopping experience more engaging and product recommendations more convincing. It also works especially well with sales promotions.

Sales promotion tactics

While Temu employs common sales tactics seen on other e-commerce platforms, it uses what is arguably the broadest array of these techniques. Here are just some examples:

  • Gamified experiences. Gamified advertising hinges on two core elements: challenge and reward. Interacting with Temu's spinning wheel is a minor challenge, but the substantial discount offered is a major reward. Such “games” create the illusion of getting lucky, and therefore generate positive emotions in consumers – while the reward gives them an incentive to engage more seriously with their browsing, increasing the likelihood of spending.
  • Lightning deals and limited-time offers. One commonly used promotion tactic involves creating the illusion of scarcity through supposedly “exclusive” offers that are time-sensitive and won't come by again. This can trigger a fear of missing out in consumers.
  • Discounts and free shipping Offering simple price reductions and very affordable sales is a time-honoured way of securing a loyal customer base. In addition, Temu has the allure of offering free shipping on orders with a very low minimum spend.

  • Loyalty program. Consumers can opt in to Temu's marketing emails in exchange for receiving more promotional content, including email-only promotions. E-commerce companies often have access to your personal information (such as your name, address, age and phone number) and behavioural data (such as from your search history and online sessions). With this data, the company can build your user profile and target you with personalised promotions and content to encourage spending.

  • Search engine marketing. Many consumers will see Temu ads at the top of their search results on Google (in the form of “sponsored” posts) when they search for a product.

  • An AI-powered promotional strategy. Temu's sister company operating in China, Pinduoduo, is renowned for its AI-driven recommendation system. It's likely Temu uses similar AI algorithms, drawing on users' browsing and purchase history to provide personalised recommendations (a practice Amazon also partakes in).

Defending against manipulation

Temu's greatest benefit to consumers lies in its offer of value. It may still have lower-quality items, but this is common among all e-commerce platforms.

Also, Temu's business model is built around emphasising top-selling products, which helps filter out low-quality products. Its 90-day free return policy further acts as a buffer for unsatisfactory purchases.

Nonetheless, Temu's value-oriented approach may not be a good thing for consumers on all fronts. Exposed to such a wide array of marketing tactics, users might become more prone to overconsumption – which leads to environmental waste and post-purchase regret.

It's worth considering your actual needs before using an e-commerce platform such as Temu. You should also familiarise yourself with the sales promotion tactics being used. Research suggests understanding these tactics, as well as advertisers' intentions, can even empower young children to be sceptical and form a cognitive defence against them.

Also, in light of Temu's gamified advertising strategy, consumers ought to temper their enthusiasm for rewards. Moving forward, one useful approach may be for schools and governments to introduce educational programs or social marketing campaigns that teach advertising tactics, and recommend coping strategies.

Ukrainian Defence Minister Resigns Amid War With Russia

Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov submitted his resignation on Monday in the biggest shakeup of the defence establishment in 18 months of war with Russia.

Reznikov has been at the forefront of Kyiv's lobbying for Western weapons to fight Russia's invasion, but his departure after months of corruption allegations against his ministry is not expected to have a big impact on military operations.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday he was sacking Reznikov and proposed Rustem Umerov, a Crimean Tatar and ex-lawmaker who runs the State Property Fund, to replace him.

Reznikov, who took office in 2021, has helped Kyiv secure billions of dollars worth of Western military aid since Russia's invasion in February 2022.

Ukraine has received weapons including German battle tanks, U.S. HIMARS rocket launchers and British Storm Shadow cruise missiles to push back Russian forces, and is poised to receive U.S. F-16 fighter jets soon.

"Reznikov did an amazing job building up a relationship with other ministers and other ministries," Andriy Zagorodnyuk, defence minister from 2019-20, told Reuters. "It saved the country because he was the owner of the process of arranging the shipments of weapons and so on."

A three-month-old counteroffensive against Russian forces in the south and east has been criticised by some Western officials for making slow progress, but Reznikov was not seen as involved in day-to-day military operations.

Reznikov, a 57-year-old former lawyer, was not implicated personally by corruption allegations levelled by Ukrainian media at the defence ministry, most notably over procurement. But the accusations prompted calls for him to be fired, and Reznikov portrayed himself as the victim of a smear campaign

Zelenskiy has said he has a zero tolerance line on corruption as Kyiv tries to advance its bid to join the European Union and show it is enforcing on the rule of law.

He said the defence ministry needed "other formats of interaction with both the military and society as a whole."

"The logic was to clear the heightened tension around the ministry," said Volodymyr Fesenko, a Ukrainian political analyst, referring to months of calls for Reznikov to go.

Parliamentary approval is required for Reznikov's departure. This is widely expected to follow and his resignation has already been backed by the parliamentary committee for defence.

In his resignation letter, Reznikov provided an overview of his 22 months in the post, praising Ukraine's fierce wartime resistance against Russian forces and his ministry's lobbying efforts for military aid.

"Over 50% of the temporarily occupied territories by Russia have already been liberated. Every day our defenders are moving forward," he said in the letter, posted on X.

"There is an understanding that Ukraine is a shield of Europe in the east."

Reznikov, who has been tipped to become Ukraine's ambassador to London, said he saw one of Kyiv's priorities as building long-term partnerships with allies and securing "real security guarantees".

Umerov's candidacy is due to be reviewed by parliament later this week.

Fesenko said the main factors for the appointment of Umerov, 41, were his reputation as a good manager, and his successful tenure at the helm of the State Property Fund.

Fesenko said Umerov would need to fix the ministry's procurement systems, as well as work on improving its reputation.

"It won't be easy, certainly. Especially getting rid of corruption in state procurement. This is unfortunately a systemic problem not just in the Defence Ministry, but in the entire Ukrainian economy," he said.

Inside Pic: SRK-Aamir Pose With Brothers Sunny-Bobby At Gadar 2 Party

It was a star-studded night in Mumbai on Saturday as some of the biggest stars in the film fraternity came together to celebrate Gadar 2's massive feat at the box office. Superstars Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and others were seen attending the party hosted by actor Sunny Deol. Darr co-stars Shah Rukh Khan and Sunny Deol, who seem to have resolved their differences, left their fans pleasantly surprised as they were seen hugging and posing for the paparazzi. Now, to the fans' delight, another picture of Shah Rukh Khan and Sunny Deol has emerged from inside the success bash. In the picture that is doing the rounds on social media, we can see Sunny Deol and Shah Rukh Khan smiling at the camera. The actors are also joined by Sunny Deol's younger brother Bobby and Dangal star Aamir Khan.

The picture shared by a fan club is captioned, "blockbuster pics." See the image below:

Shah Rukh Khan, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film Jawan, attended Gadar 2's success bash hosted by actor Sunny Deol on Saturday night alongside his wife Gauri Khan. In a video from the night, the two stars can be seen embracing each other while posing for the paparazzi stationed at the venue. Shah Rukh and Sunny also shared a warm hug before he escorted Sunny Deol inside the party.

For the unversed, Shah Rukh Khan and Sunny Deol have worked together in the 1993 film Darr alongside actress Juhi Chawla. In the thriller, Shah Rukh Khan played the antagonist.

Here are some pictures from the night:

Shah Rukh Khan and Sunny Deol's relationship dynamics go far back. While on the sets of Yash Chopra's 1993 film Darr, Sunny had a falling out with the filmmaker as well as SRK. Sunny Deol said that he disagreed with the way his character was portrayed in the film's climax. In an old Aap Ki Adalat episode, Sunny Deol spoke about not being on speaking terms with SRK after the film, clarifying that he and SRK never ran into each other because he doesn't socialize much. "It's not that I didn't talk but I just cut myself off and I anyway don't socialise much. So we never met, toh baat karne ki baat he nahi hai," Sunny Deol said in the old interview.

In a recent interview with Times Now, Sunny Deol however revealed that SRK had called to congratulate him for Gadar 2's success. Sunny Deol told Times Now, "He had seen this film and before that, he called me up and wished me and he was so happy, he told me I am so happy, you genuinely deserve it and I said thank you." Sunny Deol said that he also spoke to SRK's wife Gauri Khan and added, "I spoke to his wife and son and he said that tonight we're going to watch the film. And I said Great. And I think after that he has seen it and tweeted about it."

Shah Rukh Khan was also seen giving a shout out to Gadar 2 on X. Last weekend, Shah Rukh Khan did an #ASKSRK session on X (earlier called Twitter). During the session, SRK was asked, "Gadar 2 dekhi apne (Did you watch Gadar 2)" Shah Rukh Khan replied, "Yeah loved it."

See his tweet below:

Directed by Anil Sharma, Gadar 2 is the sequel to the 2001 hit Gadar. In the sequel Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel, and Utkarsh Sharma have reprised their roles of Tara Singh, Sakeena, and Jeete, respectively. The film was released in theatres last month. It clashed with Akshay Kumar's OMG 2 at the box office.

On Buzz Xi May Skip India G20 Summit, Sources Say "Attendance Varies..."

Amid media speculation some heads of state, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, may skip the G20 Summit this weekend, sources have pointed out it is natural "level of attendance at global summits varies from year to year" and highlighted demands on their time as one reason why some global leaders may not be in Delhi.

Media reports suggesting Mr Jinping will not attend G20 Summit - the rotating presidency of which is held by India this year - have been doing the rounds over the past week. Officials familiar with developments say Premier Li Qiang will lead China's delegation.

Sources said on Sunday that given world leaders' busy schedules "it is not always possible for every leader to attend every summit" and that many may skip summits for personal reasons.

"These things do not reflect anything about the host country."

Sources also said that of 17 summits held from 2008 (including the 2020 meet in Saudi Arabia that was held online due to the COVID pandemic), "there has never been a single occasion from 2010 till now when every country has attended at head of state level".

Between 2010 and 2013, and in 2016 and 2017, six countries were represented below HoS/HoG level and, in 2010, 2014-15, and 2018-19, there five were such occasions.

In 2021 - the worst year of the pandemic - six countries were led by individuals below HoS/HoG rank. In 2022 - after Russia's illegal war on Ukraine - three sent teams not lead by designated HoS/HoGs.

Only Canada, Germany, India, Italy, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union have always sent a head of state to a G20 summit.

China, France, Indonesia, Japan and South Africa have not done so on one instance each, which Argentina, Australia, Brazil and Russia have done so two times each.

US President Joe Biden has said he will be disappointed if Mr Jinping does not attend but added "I am going to get to see him", although he did not specify when and where.

On this occasion too, Russia will not be represented by a head of state after President Vladimir Putin conveyed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he will not be present.

Mr Putin will send foreign minister Sergey Lavrov in his place.

The President of Mexico hasn't attended a G20 Summit since 2018 and Saudi Arabia has failed to send a head of state on no fewer than nine instances, including sending a junior minister (without a portfolio) for the 2017 summit in Hamburg in Germany.
