WWDC 2023: Apple Confirms Keynote Address for June 5, Reportedly Invites VR Experts Ahead of Headset Launch

WWDC 2023 — Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference — will begin with a keynote event on June 5, the company confirmed on Tuesday. The Cupertino company has revealed the schedule for the first day of the developer conference where it is expected to unveil upcoming versions of its iOS, macOS, iPadOS, tvOS, and watchOS operating systems. Apple is also tipped to launch its first mixed reality headset at WWDC 2023, and the company has reportedly invited VR industry experts to its upcoming event.

Apple announced in a press release that its WWDC 2023 keynote event would begin on June 5 at 10am PDT (10:30pm IST). As with previous events, you can stream the event via Apple's website, YouTube, the Apple TV+ app, and the Apple Developer app. Once the livestream ends, you can also watch the entire event again. This will be followed by the Platforms State of the Union at 1:30pm PDT (2am IST on June 6) and the Apple Design Awards at 6:30pm PDT (7am IST on June 6).

Developers will also have the option to attend more events and take tours of Apple Park in California, and the company has scheduled a 'Special Evening Activity' at WWDC. A developer who was invited was informed by Apple that it will be an event they "won't want to miss". The company is also scheduled to conduct another event to "discuss some of the latest announcements" on June 6.

Meanwhile, Apple has invited several virtual reality (VR) experts to WWDC 2023. The list of people invited include VR technology-focussed publications and journalists such as Road to VR, UploadVR, and Norman Chan. The invitations to VR and XR creator and publications comes amid speculation that Apple is expected to unveil its first mixed reality headset at WWDC.

Over the past several months, reports have suggested that Apple will announce its first mixed reality headset — said to be dubbed Reality Pro — at WWDC. The headset will reportedly "enclose" a user's eyes and allow them to see "virtual worlds" while utilising external cameras to see their surroundings.

Other reports claim that Apple is working to adapt iPad apps to work on the wearable headset and will unveil xrOS, the operating system expected to run on the headset. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the mixed reality headset will be powered by an external battery pack that offers up to two hours of battery backup. Production of the headset is said to have been delayed, which means it may only be available by the end of the year, even if it is unveiled by Apple at WWDC.

Bitcoin Price Rises, Most Altcoins Recover as Investors Remain Cautious Amid US Debt Ceiling Crisis

Bitcoin price on Tuesday crossed the $27,070 (roughly Rs. 22.35 lakh) mark for the first time in several days and was trading at $27,075 (roughly Rs. 22.4 lakh). With a slight increase of 1.56 percent, the world's most popular cryptocurrency rose in value by $290 (roughly Rs. 24,000) after days of trading around $26,000 (roughly Rs. 21.5 lakh). Industry experts have highlighted that Bitcoin is currently trading in one of the narrowest ranges recorded in the past three years. Ether, like Bitcoin, rose in value and was trading at $1,840 (roughly Rs. 1.52 lakh), or a gain of 2.36 percent, as per the Gadgets 360 crypto price tracker.

“The crypto fear and greed index remains in the neutral zone with 50 points, up 1 point. Investor sentiment continues to be cautious in the backdrop of the US debt ceiling discussions,” Parth Chaturvedi, Investments Lead, CoinSwitch Ventures told Gadgets 360. Most cryptocurrencies also rose in value, after days of losses for crypto traders. Stablecoins Tether, USD Coin, Ripple, and Binance USD saw their prices rise on Tuesday.

Cardano, Polygon, Solana, Tron, Litecoin, Polkadot, and Avalanche also reeled-in profits alongside memecoins DOGE and SHIB.

The valuation of the overall crypto market rose by 2.69 percent in the last 24 hours to record $1.14 trillion (roughly Rs. 94,82,726 crore) in capitalisation, as per CoinMarketCap.

“Crypto markets are trading slightly higher in the last 24 hours. A new report by TRM Labs highlights a decreasing trend in crypto hacks. The report shares that there has been a 70 percent decline in hacks from Q1 2022, while the average hack size has also shrunk. Hackers are increasingly settling for white-hat rewards from exploited projects. In parallel, another crypto project—STEPN—has been added to the Apple ecosystem. Last week saw Axie Infinity's rollout on the Apple App Store,” Chaturvedi added, highlighting factors that may have contributed in the upward movement of most cryptocurrencies.

Only a small number of cryptocurrencies recorded losses amid the otherwise recovering market momentum. Leo, Bitcoin SV, Baby Doge Coin, Braintrust, Circuits of Value, and Kishu inu emerged on the loss-making side of the crypto price chart.

“The US crypto market continues to be an unfriendly environment for businesses to operate in, making them look eastwards for greener pastures,” Rajagopal Menon, Vice President, WazirX told Gadgets 360.

TCS Bags Rs. 15,000-Crore Purchase Order From BSNL to Deploy 4G Network Across India

Tata Consultancy Services on Monday said a consortium, led by the IT giant, received an advance purchase order valued over Rs. 15,000 crore from the state-run BSNL for the deployment of a fourth-generation mobile (4G) network across India.

This comes at a time when Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are ramping up their infrastructure of 5G technology across the country.

State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) on April 22 launched 4G services in pilot mode in parts of Punjab in a run-up to a formal rollout of 4G services. The company has started live testing of its 4G services with 135 tower sites using an indigenous telecom stack.

According to a statement from Tata Group's Tejas Networks Limited released on April 3, it received an order worth Rs. 696 crore from BSNL for the upgradation of its all-India IP-MPLS based Access and Aggregation Network (MAAN).

Tejas Networks, part of the Tata Group, designs and manufactures wireless networking products for telecommunications service providers, defence and government entities in over 75 countries. As a part of this contract, Tejas Networks will supply, install and commission over 13,000 of its 'TJ1400' series of next-generation access and aggregation routers.

Initial supplies and deployment are expected to be completed within the next 18 months, Tejas Networks said in an exchange filing on Monday.

Tejas Networks is an optical, broadband and data networking products company based in India. The company designs develops and sells its products to telecom service providers, internet service providers, utilities, security and government entities in 75 countries.

The shares of TCS were trading 0.70 percent up at Rs. 3,245.05 apiece in morning trade, on Monday.

The shares of Tejas Networks were trading 0.97 percent up at Rs. 648.20 apiece on BSE in morning trade on Monday.

Bitcoin, Ether Join Majority Altcoins on Loss-Making Side of Price Chart, Memecoins Trend

Bitcoin recorded a drop of two percent as it stepped into Monday, May 22. The most expensive cryptocurrency failed to bag any gains over the weekend, leaving its trading value to hover over the mark of $26,653 (roughly Rs. 22 lakh). On both, national as well as international exchanges, Bitcoin is trading around the similar price point. While stepping into the weekend that was, Bitcoin was trading at a slightly higher price of $26,785 (roughly Rs. 22 lakh). Between Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21 — Bitcoin fell by $132 (roughly Rs. 10,930) in its value.

“Bitcoin traded at the $27,000 (roughly Rs. 22 lakh) level over the weekend but has since declined as the market eagerly anticipates a week filled with significant news in the United States. Investors and traders should closely monitor these events as they have the potential to impact market sentiment. Some amount of volatility might be observed in the market throughout this week. If buyers can maintain the price above the current level, there is a chance for a brief upward movement,” Edul Patel, CEO of Mudrex crypto investment platform told Gadgets 360.

Ether joined Bitcoin to record notable losses on Monday. The second-most valued cryptocurrency after BTC, ETH slipped by 1.01 percent to trade at the price point of $1,801 (roughly Rs. 1.4 lakh). As of last Friday, ETH has shown a gain of only $1 (roughly Rs. 82).

Losses striking Bitcoin and Ether often impact other cryptocurrencies in their values. Today, for instance, majority cryptocurrencies tagged along with the top two coins towards the loss-making side of the price charts.

These include stablecoins Tether, USD Coin, Ripple, and Binance USD alongside popular cryptocurrencies like Cardano and Polygon.

Solana, Litecoin, Polkadot, Avalanche, Chainlink, and Cosmos also reeled-in minor, but significant losses.

“Crypto markets have observed slight selling pressure in the last 24 hours. The crypto fear and greed index is down 3 points, currently in the neutral zone with 49 points. This hints that investors continue to be cautious. In token-specific action, Ripple's (XRP) case against the Securities and Exchange (SEC) seems to be tilting in XRP's favour with the ruling that the SEC cannot seal specific documents tied to its speech on crypto in the past. This could impact XRP's classification as a security. The news around the ruling led to a five percent rally in its prices. XRP is currently trading around $0.46 (roughly Rs. 38),” Parth Chaturvedi, Investments Lead, CoinSwitch Ventures told Gadgets 360.

The valuation of the overall crypto market dipped by 1.58 percent in the last 24 hours, to sit at $1.11 trillion (roughly Rs. 92,32,119 crore) as of Monday.

Among the handful of cryptocurrencies that did manage to see small profits today, Bitcoin Cash, NEM, Braintrust, and Circuits of Value marked their presence.

Memecoins Dogecoin and Shiba Inu have emerged as trending cryptocurrencies in recent days despite trading in losses, after they are being pitted in constant comparison with the new memecoin on the block — Pepe Coin.

Japan Explores Ways to Join India's UPI Payment System

Japan is mulling to join India's UPI payment system and promote cooperation on the digital identity system, an official statement said on Friday.

Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore and UAE have already started accepting Unified Payment Interface (UPI) payment systems.

"Almost every global forum, whether G20, SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) or G7, wherever we are presenting Hon'ble PM Modi's Digital India vision, has very good traction.

"People understand how Modi ji has democratised digital technology. I thank the Japanese digital minister. He has accepted PM Modi's very deep and extensive vision of Digital India," Union Minister for IT and Telecom Ashwini Vaishnaw said.

Japanese Digital Minister Kono Taro earlier on Friday said in an interview with a media channel that Japan is mulling joining India's UPI system and working on mutually recognising digital identities as well.

"We just had our G7 Digital Ministers' meeting last month and we had our Indian Digital Minister Mr Vaishnaw join with us and right now. Japan and India are trying to promote digital cooperation."

"We are now seriously thinking about joining Indian UPI, the payments system and also, we are contemplating how we can mutually recognise e-ID, for well – starting with cooperation, so we can increase interoperability," Taro said.

According to a report published last month, UPI, debit and credit cards, and prepaid payment instruments — Mobile and Prepaid cards —processed 87.92 billion transactions worth Rs. 149.5 trillion during 2022 in India. In terms of UPI, Person-to-Merchant (P2M) and Person-to-Person (P2P) are the most preferred payment modes among consumers with a market share of 40 percent and 44 percent in terms of transactions volume (UPI was 84 percent in total), according to Worldline in its India Digital Payments Annual Report.

Apple Releases iOS 16.5 With New Pride Wallpaper, Sports Tab in Apple News, More: All New Features

iOS 16.5 alongside the iPadOS 16.5 was released by Apple on Thursday. The update consists of multiple bug fixes alongside a few new features. This new iOS update introduces a new Pride section in the inbuilt wallpaper editor. The iPadOS update does not get the Pride wallpapers, but comes with other significant visual changes. Earlier this week, the Cupertino-based tech giant unveiled a fresh set of accessibility features including Assistive Access, Live Speech, and Personal Voice among others to assist disabled or impaired Apple product users. This update also integrates the Following and Search tabs in the Apple News app on iPhone into one single tab. Spotlight and Podcasts in CarPlay issues have also been fixed in the iOS 16.5 update. It also offers a bug fix to Screen Time settings, that would previously reset or not sync the features across all Apple devices. The iOS 16.5 update is available for all models starting from iPhone 8 and later.

The iPadOS 16.5 update, on the other hand, does not come with the new Pride Wallpapers, but it gets the similar Sports section updates in the Apple News app. Similar fixes for Spotlight and Screen Time settings issues are also offered for iPad users. The update is available for all iPad Pro models, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 5th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later.

Apple also released the macOS Ventura 13.4 update, which along with the Apple News features and Screen Time settings, also offers fixes for Auto Unlock with Apple Watch, Bluetooth keyboard connection, and VoiceOver issues.

Eddie Murphy Is in Talks to Play Inspector Clouseau in Pink Panther Reboot Film at MGM

Hollywood star Eddie Murphy (Coming to America) is in negotiations to play the classic character of Inspector Jacques Clouseau in a new Pink Panther movie. According to entertainment news outlet Deadline, Hollywood studio MGM is rebooting the franchise and has roped in Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler for the project.

Chris Bremner (Bad Boys for Life) will pen the screenplay for the movie, which will be produced by Dan Lin, Julie Andrews, Larry Mirisch, and Jonathan Eirich.

The new feature project would be a live-action/ CG hybrid and would combine both traditions. The premise takes a buddy cop movie tone to the proceedings with the Inspector and Panther teaming up for the first time ever on the big screen.

The Pink Panther franchise began with the 1963 comedy film, starring Peter Sellers as bumbling Inspector Clouseau.

The Pink Panther refers to the name of a valuable pink diamond at the centre of a heist in the original film. A cartoon panther appeared in the opening credits, and became popular in his own right, starring in several animated projects over the decades.

Sellers later reprised the role in A Shot in the Dark (1964), The Return of the Pink Panther (1975), The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976), and Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978).

The role has also been inhabited by Alan Arkin and Roger Moore. Actor-comedian Steve Martin played the part in 2006's The Pink Panther and 2009's The Pink Panther 2.

Murphy most recently starred in Netflix's You People, co-starring Jonah Hill, Lauren London, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Apple Ex-Employee Charged in US for Alleged Theft of Company's Self-Driving Technology

The United States on Tuesday announced charges in five cases involving alleged efforts to steal technology to benefit China, Russia and Iran including a former Apple engineer accused of targeting the company's technology on autonomous systems, including self-driving cars, and then fleeing to China.

The cases detailed at a Justice Department press conference centred on allegations concerning the theft of trade secrets and other technology. Two of the cases involved what U.S. officials called procurement networks created to help Russia's military and intelligence services obtain sensitive technology.

The five cases were the first announced by a U.S. "strike force" formed in February in part to protect sensitive technologies, though the investigations began before it was created.

"We stand vigilant in enforcing U.S. laws to stop the flow of sensitive technologies to our foreign adversaries," Matt Olsen, the head of the Justice Department's National Security Division, told reporters. "We are committed to doing all we can to prevent these advanced tools from falling into the hands of foreign adversaries."

The former Apple engineer, identified as 35-year-old Weibao Wang, formerly resided in Mountain View, California, and was hired by Apple in 2016, according to an April indictment unsealed on Tuesday.

In 2017, he accepted a U.S.-based job with a Chinese company working to develop self-driving cars before resigning from Apple, but waited about four months before informing Apple of his new job, according to the indictment.

After his last day at Apple, the company discovered that he had accessed large amounts of proprietary data in the days before his departure, the Justice Department said. Federal agents searched his home in June 2018 and found "large quantities" of data from Apple, it added. Shortly after the search, he boarded a plane to China, the department said.

Apple's automotive efforts, known as Project Titan, have proceeded unevenly since 2014, when the company started to design a vehicle from scratch. A December report said Apple had postponed the car's planned launch to 2026. Reports filed with the state of California show Apple is testing vehicles on the state's roads.

Apple declined to comment on the case.

In a second case related to China, U.S. prosecutors announced charges against Liming Li, 64, of Rancho Cucamonga, California, for allegedly stealing trade secrets from his California-based employers to build his own competing business in China.

Prosecutors in New York charged Nikolaos "Nikos" Bogonikolos, 49, of Greece with smuggling U.S.-origin military technologies to Russia while he was operating as a defense contractor for NATO.

Russian nationals Oleg Sergeyevich Patsulya and Vasilii Sergeyevich Besedin were each charged in Arizona for allegedly using their Florida-based company to send aircraft parts to Russian airline companies, while the Commerce Department in a parallel action suspended their export privileges.

In addition, prosecutors in New York announced charges against Xiangjiang Qiao, also known as Joe Hansen, 39, for allegedly using a Chinese company that is the target of American sanctions to provide materials used in the production of weapons of mass destruction to Iran.

Qiao and Wang remain at large in China, while the other four defendants were arrested, U.S. officials said.

Attorneys for Patsulya and Besedin, who were arrested on May 11, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. An attorney for Li did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reuters could not determine who is representing Bogonikolos.

Bitcoin Trades at Over $27,000, Ether Joins Majority Altcoins in Registering Profits

Majority cryptocurrencies managed to record small profits on the crypto charts on Wednesday, May 17. Bitcoin did manage to maintain its value above the mark of $27,180 on Wednesday, after days of trading lowly on both, national as well as international exchanges. With a miniscule gain of 0.50 percent, Bitcoin stepped into the market charts today at the price point of $27,082 (roughly Rs. 22.3 lakh). Industry insiders believe that investors monitoring the debt ceiling negotiations could be the ones pulling away any form of risky investments for now, causing this dip in BTC price.

“Investors are monitoring debt ceiling negotiations. Resolving the issue may bolster Bitcoin as a hedge in the macroeconomic landscape. The rising debt ceiling would benefit risk assets, safeguarding wealth for market participants,” Rajagopal Menon, Vice President, WazirX told Gadgets 360.

Ethereum bagged 0.81 percent in gains to trade at $1,823 (roughly Rs. 1.50 lakh). The second most expensive cryptocurrency after Bitcoin, Ether, rose by $14 (roughly Rs. 1,152) in the last 24 hours.

Speaking to Gadgets 360, the research team of CoinDCX noted that the once strong correlation between BTC and ETH has shown signs of weakening in the current year.

“This indicates at an impending shift in the market dynamics. Recent data reveals that the 30-day rolling correlation between BTC and ETH prices dropped to 77 percent, the lowest since 2021 and significantly weaker than the 96 percent observed just two months ago. This divergence suggests that the relationship between these two are evolving, signalling a potential regime change in the crypto market,” the CoinDCX team said. This decreased correlation is expected to stimulate greater trading activity within Bitcoin and Ethereum pairs going forward.

Stablecoins Tether, USD Coin, Ripple, and Binance USD tagged behind BTC and ETH to record small profits.

Conventionally popular cryptocurrencies like Binance Coin, Cardano, Dogecoin, Solana, Polygon, Litecoin, Polkadot, and Tron among others also managed to see minor price hikes.

The overall crypto market rose by 0.44 percent in the last 24 hours, taking the sector valuation to $1.13 trillion (roughly Rs. 93,23,054 crore) as per CoinMarketCap.

Only a small number of cryptocurrencies settled with losses. These include Leo, Bitcoin Cash, Cronos, Elrond, Bitcoin SV, Braintrust, and Circuits of Value.

In another major update from the crypto world, the European Union states have given the final nod to the world's first comprehensive set of rules to regulate crypto-assets called MiCA. An EU finance minister meeting in Brussels approved rules that were thrashed out with the European Parliament, which gave its approval in April.

The passing of the MiCA legislation in the EU does intensify the pressure on other nations including India, that are still in the process of framing their crypto laws.

Bitcoin Nears $27,000 Mark, Prices of Most Cryptocurrencies Fall Despite Bullish Sentiment: Details

Bitcoin price on Tuesday was $26,985 (roughly Rs. 22 lakh) on both, national as well as international exchanges, and the digital currency appears to be inching closer to recovery. With a minor loss of 0.70 percent, the world's most expensive cryptocurrency saw its price fall from $27,180 (roughly Rs. 22.3 lakh) over the last 24 hours — a drop of $195 (roughly Rs. 16,032). Ether also recorded losses like Bitcoin. ETH on Tuesday recorded a loss of 1.37 percent, as per the Gadgets 360 crypto price tracker. Ether is currently trading at $1,809 — a drop of $16 (roughly Rs. 1,315).

“BTC and ETH have been range bound. However, BTC's value is holding relatively well and is currently above its 200-week average. In parallel, Lido (LDO) upgraded to its second version on Ethereum last evening, resulting in a >7 percent price rally over the last 24 hours. Bullish sentiments seem to be gradually restoring as the crypto fear and greed index stands at 54, up four points from yesterday. The crypto-cautious investors, however, continue to observe from the sidelines,” Parth Chaturvedi, Investments Lead, CoinSwitch Ventures told Gadgets 360.

Many other cryptocurrencies saw their prices fall on Tuesday, including Binance Coin, Cardano, Solana, Polygon, Polkadot, and Avalanche.

Both memecoins Dogecoin and Shiba Inu also dropped in value.

“Market makers have retreated from US crypto trading due to liquidity and regulatory concerns. Analysts await the debt ceiling talks to assess if investors perceive Bitcoin as a safe-haven asset amidst regulatory uncertainty,” Rajagopal Menon, Vice President, WazirX told Gadgets 360.

As per CoinMarketCap, the crypto sector's market cap stood at $1.13 trillion (roughly Rs. 92,68,725 crore) on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Tether, USD Coin, and Binance USD saw their prices rise. These stablecoins were also joined by Bitcoin Cash, NEO Coin, Iota, and Zilliqa that also rose in value.

Despite the ongoing slowdown in the crypto sector, experts believe activities around cryptocurrencies are still brewing. “One notable indicator of potential upward momentum for Bitcoin, for instance, is the decline in the Stablecoin Supply Ratio (SSR), which has dropped approximately 11 percent in the past 11 days. The SSR is a key metric used to gauge buying pressure in the market, with lower values suggesting increased buying power. These developments bode well for Bitcoin's price trajectory, potentially pushing it higher in the near term,” the research team at CoinDCX told Gadgets 360.

In another encouraging development for Bitcoin, the number of wallet addresses holding at least one whole BTC has surpassed the one million milestone. This significant growth in the number indicates a broadening base of Bitcoin holders who have accumulated enough of the cryptocurrency to possess at least one full unit. “The rise in the number of such addresses, with approximately 190,000 added since early February 2022, coincided with a decline in Bitcoin's price,” the CoinDCX team added.

Bitcoin, Ether Trade Low Despite Small Gains; Most Altcoins Show Gradual Recovery

Bitcoin could take more days to trade around the mark of $30,000 (roughly Rs. 24.6 lakh) again after it recently hit a slump last week. Bitcoin on Monday, May 15, recorded a profit of 1.38 percent to trade at the price point of $27,180 (roughly Rs. 22.3 lakh). The world's most expensive cryptocurrency, BTC maintained a similar value on national as well as international exchanges. Over the weekend, the value of Bitcoin dropped by $545 (roughly Rs. 44,799).

Ethereum rose in value by 1.30 percent to trade at $1,825 (roughly Rs. 1.50 lakh). It is notable, that unlike Bitcoin, which slipped down on the price ladder despite garnering small gains, Ether did manage to show a rise in prices. Over the weekend, ETH prices spiked by $63 (roughly Rs. 5,180).

“Bitcoin appears to have stabilized after a week-long downward trend, trading up in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, Ether, the second-largest crypto, is trading near $1,800 (roughly Rs. 1.4 lakh), showing little change since early Saturday. Despite this, the crypto is still down over 10 percent since May 5, with profit-taking, low liquidity, and market uncertainties cited as contributing factors,” Rajagopal Menon, Vice President, WazirX, told Gadgets 360.

A big number of cryptocurrencies tagged behind BTC and ETH to see small profits on Monday.

These include Binance Coin, Cardano, Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, Solana, Polygon, and Polkadot.

In addition, Litecoin, Avalanche, Chainlink, Leo, and Uniswap also managed to mint small gains.

The overall crypto market valuation climbed up by 1.34 percent in the last 24 hours. The capitalisation of the global crypto sector stands at $1.14 trillion (roughly Rs. 93,54,177 crore), as per CoinMarketCap.

Meanwhile, the crypto price tracker by Gadgets 360 reflected losses next to several cryptocurrencies on Monday.

These include Tether, USD Coin, Tron, Cosmos, Bitcoin SV, and Baby Doge Coin among others.

The coming days could soon pacify the market turbulence, industry insiders believe.

“Last week, the amount of Bitcoin held on digital asset exchanges has plummeted to 5.84 percent, the lowest point in the past five and a half years. This suggests that more holders are preferring to store their crypto on cold wallets rather than dealing with exchanges. The last time figures were that low was in December 2017, indicating a potential shift in the behaviour of long-term holders. This trend may lead to greater security and stability in the market,” the research team of CoinDCX exchange told Gadgets 360.

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra Colour Options Suggested via Leaked Press Renders: All Details

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is expected to be released in the market soon. The purported clamshell foldable smartphone is expected to launch as the successor to the Moto Razr 2022. The handset is expected to be considerably better in design and performance than its predecessor, as hinted by Lenovo CEO Yuanqing Yang earlier this year. The phone has previously been rumoured to launch with Moto Razr+ and Moto Razr 2023 monikers in select regions. Earlier leaks hinted at specifications and design renders of the foldable handset. Now, a new leak of high-quality press renders suggest the colour options of the smartphone.

Reliable tipster Evan Blass shared alleged press renders of the upcoming Motorola Razr 40 Ultra in a series of tweets. The phone is seen in black, blue, and red colour variants. This backs up an earlier report which claimed that the handset will be offered in Glacier Blue (blue), Infinite Black (black), and Viva Magenta (red) colour options.

Earlier reports have suggested that the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra will be a lightweight, sleek foldable smartphone with spill and splash resistance. The leaked press renders reaffirm the expected sleek appearance of the handset. The rear panel of the phone is seen sporting two separate circular camera rings aligned horizontally alongside an LED flash panel.

The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is expected to be powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset, according to a previous leak. The leak also suggested that the phone will come equipped with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of inbuilt storage.

The cover display of the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is expected to have a resolution of 1056x1066 pixels, while the inner, main 120Hz AMOLED display is expected to have a resolution of 2640x1080 pixels.

For optics, the dual rear camera unit of the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is expected to include a 12-megapixel Sony IMX563 sensor and a 13-megapixel SK Hynix Hi1336 sensor. The front camera is expected to be equipped with a 32-megapixel OmniVision OV32B40 sensor.

EU Regulators Seek More Information on Apple Pay to Boost Case Against iPhone Maker

EU antitrust regulators are seeking more information on Apple's mobile payment system, the European Commission said on Wednesday, a sign that the enforcer is looking to close any loopholes and boost its case against the iPhone maker.

The EU competition watchdog last year accused Apple of restricting rivals' access to its tap-and-go technology, Near-Field Communication (NFC), used for mobile wallets, making it difficult for them to develop rival services on Apple devices.

"We can confirm the sending of requests for information," a commission spokesperson said, while declining to provide details.

Apple declined to comment.

Apple has previously pointed to PayPal's success on its iOS mobile operating system as an option for users as well as competition from Danish rival MobilePay, Sweden's Swish and Belgium's Payconiq.

Norwegian mobile payment app and complainant Vipps said, however, that alternatives to NFC are cumbersome and not competitive.

The commission's request for information to rivals and retailers is unusual as it comes three months after Apple defended itself at a February 14 hearing.

The regulator, which can fine Apple up to 10 percent of its global turnover if found guilty of breaching antitrust rules, typically issues decisions after such hearings.

Last month, Apple announced a new high-yield deposit account with partner Goldman Sachs Group amid increased competition among financial institutions for consumer dollars.

Apple said users of its Apple Card could earn 4.15 percent on savings accounts, or 10 times higher than the national average, citing March data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation that showed consumers earned an average of 0.37 percent on savings in bank accounts.

In March, Apple also launched its "buy now, pay later" (BNPL) service in the US, a move that threatens to disrupt the fintech sector dominated by firms like Affirm Holdings and Swedish payments company Klarna.

The service, Apple Pay Later, will allow users to split purchases into four payments spread over six weeks with no interest or fees, the company said. It will initially be offered to select users, with plans of a full roll-out in the coming months.

Realme 11 Pro+ 5G with 200-Megapixel Camera Teased, May Launch in India Soon: All Details

Realme 11 Pro+ 5G is set to make its debut in China on May 10. The company has been teasing the key specifications and features of the new number series smartphone ahead of its launch. Realme has already revealed that the midrange smartphone will feature a 200-megapixel triple-camera setup — currently the highest resolution in mobile cameras. It looks like the Realme 11 Pro+ 5G could also be launched in India soon. The company has teased the launch of a new 200-megapixel camera smartphone on Twitter.

A post on Twitter markets the 200-megapixel sensor of the Realme 11 Pro+ 5G without mentioning the phone's name. However, the tweet mentions that it will be a "number series" phone, which is expected to be the Realme 11 Pro+. The tweet also touts the camera abilities of the upcoming Realme phone.

The teaser post does not offer concrete details of the company's plans to launch the Realme 11 Pro+ 5G in India, including a launch timeline. We can expect some details to be available after the phone debuts in China later on Wednesday. The phone has reportedly been spotted on the BIS certification website, hinting at an imminent launch in India.

Realme 11 Pro+ specifications (expected)

The Realme 11 Pro+ 5G is confirmed to feature a Samsung ISOCELL HM3 main camera sensor. The 200-megapixel primary camera is tipped to be paired with an 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens and a 2-megapixel macro sensor.

Realme has also revealed that the phone sports a curved AMOLED display with support for a 120Hz refresh rate. The screen is likely to be 6.7 inches tall and offer a full-HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels.

The device was spotted on Geekbench with a MediaTek Dimensity 7050 SoC, which is essentially a rebadged version of the MediaTek Dimensity 1080 SoC. The device is confirmed to offer up to 1TB of storage. Realme is also expected to launch the handset with up to 16GB of RAM in China.

It will pack a 5000mAh battery and offer 100W fast charging support. The handset will weigh about 183g. It is expected to run Android 13 out-of-the-box with Realme UI 4.0 on top.

Realme Narzo N-Series Phone With Slim Design Teased; Likely to be Previously Rumoured Narzo N53

Realme Narzo N53 is expected to launch in India soon. The phone has previously been rumoured to hit the market in May, but not much is known about the handset. That is likely to change as Realme has teased the launch of a new smartphone, calling it the "slimmest Realme smartphone ever," and even though the company has not confirmed the name of the upcoming phone, there are indications that suggest that it will be the purported Realme Narzo N53. The company states that the phone is a surprise for the customers on the occasion of Realme's five-year anniversary. Last week, to commemorate the company's five years, it announced a new Rainforest colour variant of the Realme C55.

Realme India shared a teaser on its Twitter page, about an upcoming smartphone which it claims is the slimmest one ever. The teaser shows a smartphone with a golden frame. Not much more is revealed about the handset in this teaser, however, the Amazon microsite for the phone provides us with a few more details.

In a previous report, it was suggested that the Realme Narzo N53 will launch in the country in May. It will likely be offered in Feather Black and Feather Gold colour options, which stand to be consistent with the teasers so far. The phone was reported to be launched in two storage variants - 4GB + 64GB and 6GB + 128GB, and is expected to be priced at around Rs. 13,000.

Realme's Narzo N53 will be the second Narzo N-series smartphone to launch in India, after the Realme Narzo N55, which was announced earlier this year in April. The Narzo N55 is offered in Prime Black and Prime Blue colour options and is priced at Rs. 10,999 for the 4GB + 64GB variant and at Rs. 12,999 for the 6GB + 128GB variant.

The company is also reportedly working on a Realme C53 smartphone, the teaser for which was recently leaked. The phone is said to have cleared its NBTC certification, suggesting that it could launch soon too.

Meg 2: The Trench Trailer: Jason Statham Goes Shark Hunting Once Again

Meg 2: The Trench just got a trailer — in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. Following a private, early look at CinemaCon, Warner Bros. has now dropped the action-packed trailer, which sees Jason Statham reprising his role as rescue diver Jonas Taylor, facing off against the massively murderous megalodon and a bunch of other prehistoric sea creatures. Ben Wheatley (Rebecca) directs the sequel, which is based on the 1999 thriller novel ‘The Trench' by Steve Alten. Meg 2: The Trench releases August 4 in theatres.

The trailer for Meg 2: The Trench opens with a close-up look at the prehistoric food chain, which one would naturally expect to end with the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex having the last laugh. But the reptile seems to have run out of luck this time, as he is soon devoured by a megalodon - the bigger, hungrier sea monster asserting its dominance in the ecosystem. “Jonas, we need your help,” James 'Mac' Mackreides (Cliff Curtis) explains. “We're detecting increased aquatic activity 25,000 feet deep in the trench. It's an ancient ecosystem untouched by man.” For the uninitiated, 2018's The Meg saw Jonas (Statham) discovering that a pack of megalodons — long thought to have been extinct — still thrives in a section of the Mariana Trench. The sequel appears to be exploring the depths further and seeing what other odd beasts lurk within.

The Meg 2: The Trench trailer then cuts to an underwater segment, with our heroes heading out to explore the ocean bed in armoured suits. The scene plays quite similar to Alex Garland's Annihilation, with the team carrying around firearms and moving in specific patterns to thwart the giant shark. It's soon revealed that the Meg isn't the only thing Jonas' team needs to be worried about, as we see a member getting stalked and attacked by a giant octopus. “Jonas, we've got company,” Chinese star Wu Jing warns our heroes about a swarm of prehistoric sharks — one of them being described as the biggest megalodon they'd ever seen. The trailer soon takes us back onto the surface, stressing that three massive megs had escaped the breach and were headed towards the beach shoreline.

Jonas and the team take it upon themselves to protect the lives of the innocents, as we're treated to visuals of the megs chomping down the boardwalk. The Meg 2: The Trench trailer also leans toward some predictable comedy for a bit — such as a 'meg-proof' glass tank being rendered useless and tourists trying to escape via paddle boats to no avail. It's not just the megs that have made it closer to the surface, but some other sea creatures as well, including a giant tentacled one, which is seen hurling a chopper into the waters. The whole affair screams unbridled mayhem, with over-the-top action sequences such as Statham trying to harpoon one of the megalodons while riding a strong wave; all of this is as bonkers as it sounds. The film also stars Sienna Guillory (Clifford the Big Red Dog) and Shuya Sophia Cai as the returning character Meiying.

Meg 2: The Trench releases August 4 in theatres.

Hollywood Strike Intensifies Due to Claim That AI Could Do Writers' Jobs

The Hollywood writers' strike broke out this week over pay, but the refusal of studios like Netflix and Disney to rule out artificial intelligence replacing human scribes in the future has only fueled anger and fear on the picket lines. With their rapidly advancing ability to eerily mimic human conversation, AI programs like ChatGPT have spooked many industries recently. The White House this week summoned Big Tech to discuss the potential risks.

As part of the weeks-long talks with studios and streamers that collapsed Monday, the Writers Guild of America asked for binding agreements to regulate the use of AI. Under the proposals, nothing written by AI can be considered “literary” or "source" material — industry terms that decide who gets royalties — and scripts written by WGA members cannot "be used to train AI."

But according to the WGA, studios "rejected our proposal," and countered with an offer merely to meet once a year to "discuss advancements in technology."

"It's nice for them to offer to have a meeting about how they're exploiting it against us!", joked WGA negotiating committee member Eric Heisserer, who wrote Netflix hit film Bird Box.

"Art cannot be created by a machine. You lose the heart and soul of the story... I mean, the first word is 'artificial,'" he told AFP on the picket line outside the streaming giant's Hollywood HQ Friday. While writers already know this, the danger is that "we have to watch tech companies destroy the business in an attempt to find out for themselves," he said.

Not just scripts

While few television and film writers who spoke to AFP on the picket lines believe their work could be done by computers, the apparent conviction of studios and streamers that it can has been an extra slap in the face.

They fear that belt-tightening executives in Hollywood, where Silicon Valley companies have upended many traditional practices such as long-term contracts for writers, may seek to cut costs further by getting computers to write their next hit shows.

Comments by top Hollywood executives at this week's Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills will have done nothing to quell writers' concerns. “In the next three years, you're going to see a movie that was written by AI made... a good one,” said movie producer Todd Lieberman.

“Not just scripts. Editing, all of it... storyboarding a movie, anything,” added Fox Entertainment CEO, Rob Wade. “AI in the future, maybe not next year or the year after, but if we're talking 10 years? AI is going to be able to do absolutely all of these things.”

The studios' own account of the breakdown in WGA talks offered a more nuanced take. In a briefing note shared with AFP, they said writers do not in fact want to outlaw AI, and appear happy to use it "as part of their creative process" — so long as it does not affect their pay.

That scenario "requires a lot more discussion, which we've committed to doing," the studios said.

Guardrails

For Leila Cohan, a 39-year-old writer on Netflix smash hit Bridgerton, the only usefulness of AI for writers is limited to "busy work" such as coming up with names for characters. But she predicted that studios "could start making incredibly bad first drafts with AI and then hiring writers to do a rewrite."

"I think that's certainly a very scary possibility... it's very smart that we're addressing this now," she said.

Indeed, the last Hollywood strike in 2007–08 won writers the right to be paid for online viewing of their shows or films — highly prescient, at a time when streaming was in its infancy. Back then, Netflix had barely started online viewing, and the likes of Disney+ and Apple TV+ were more than a decade away.

Even for sci-fi writer Ben Ripley, who believes there is no role whatsoever for AI in writing, introducing legislation now "to put guardrails up" is "very necessary." Writers "have to be original," he said. "Artificial intelligence is the antithesis of originality."
