Israel Prefers To Avoid Tough War With Hezbollah: Defence Minister

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has said that his country prefers to avoid a difficult war with the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.

Speaking with fighter soldiers near Israel's northern border with Lebanon on Friday, Gallant noted that Israel will eventually return the northern region residents to their homes safely, and wants to exhaust every chance to do so by agreement, "because we know that war has prices for everyone", Xinhua news agency reported.

"A long round of hard war would be a catastrophe for Lebanon and Hezbollah, but there would also be a price for us and we prefer to avoid that," he added.

Gallant noted, however, that "anything can happen, and we must prepare for it. If we conclude that we need to act, we will do so simply because we have to take care of our citizens."

Earlier on Friday, the Israeli military said in statements that it attacked Hezbollah's air defence infrastructure, launchers, and structures in southern Lebanon.

According to reports in Lebanon, a local leader of the group was killed in the Israeli strikes.

At the same time, Hezbollah's attacks continued on Friday, with dozens of rockets and drones launched into northern Israel.

The exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and the Israeli military have ramped up in recent days. Hezbollah has deployed new types of rockets against Israel and recently launched a drone attack the furthest into Israeli territory since October.

China To Launch First Space Tourism Vehicle By 2028

Chinese commercial space company CAS Space announced its "space tourism vehicle" will first fly in 2027 and travel to the edge of space in 2028, state media reported on Friday.

The announcement comes just days after Jeff Bezos-backed Blue Origin announced that its New Shepard Rocket, which flies cargo and humans on short trips to the edge of space, would resume flights on Sunday, ending a near two-year pause of crewed operations.

CAS Space said that its vehicle will include a tourist cabin that has four panoramic windows and can carry seven passengers per flight. The company plans to arrange a launch every 100 hours from a newly-built aerospace theme park, with ten vehicles available to take tourists to the edge of space in shifts.

Tickets will cost 2 million to 3 million yuan ($415,127) per person per trip, state media said.

Guangzhou-based CAS Space was founded in 2018 and its second-largest shareholder is China's biggest state research institute, the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

China's space exploration program has recently narrowed the gap with the United States and could become the first country to return samples from the far side of the moon after it launched the Chang'e-6 mission earlier this month.

That launch attracted hordes of tourists to the launch site on China's island province of Hainan. Before blast-off tens of thousands of people gathered in different viewing spots near the launch site, causing long traffic jams.

"Will Be Gone...": Virat Kohli Spills Beans On Retirement Plans

India great and former RCB captain Virat Kohli has spilled beans on his post-retirement plans, saying that he would take a long break after he done playing cricket. Kohli, who made his India debut in 2008, is regarded by many as the greatest batter of his generation. Kohli, 35, continues to inspire budding cricketers with his tremendous fitness and consistency to score runs at the highest level. In a recent chat with his IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Kohli suggested that as a sportsperson he doesn't want to have any regrets once he done playing the game.

"I think as a sportsman, we do have an end-date to our careers. So I am just working backwards. I don't want to finish my career thinking 'oh, what if I have done this on that particular day' because I can't keep going on and on forever. So it's just about not leaving any undone business behind and not have any regrets later, which I am sure I won't," said Kohli at RCB's Royal Gala Dinner.

Kohli suggested that once he retires from cricket, he would take a long break before deciding his next chapter.

"Once I am done, I will be gone, you won't see me for a while (smiles). So I want to give it everything I have till the time I play, and that's the only thing that keeps me going," he added.

Kohli is currently playing for RCB in IPL 2024. He is currently the leading run-getter in the tournament with 661 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 155.16 and an impressive average of 66.10.

Placed fifth in table with 12 points, RCB are still alive in the play-off race. They take on CSK in a virtual knockout clash on Saturday.

However, the match is in danger of being washed out with the weather forecast predicting rain for the next five days in Bengaluru.

In case of a washout, both teams will be awarded a point each. However, RCB will crash out of the tournament while CSK will qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs.

"He Was My Baby": 10-Year-Old DIes By Suicide After Bullying At School

A ten-year-old boy died by suicide on May 5 in Indiana, US, following persistent bullying at his school, his parents said.

“I held him in my arms,” the father of Sammy Teusch, a fourth-grader at Greenfield Intermediate School, Indiana, told WTHR. “Any time I close my eyes, it's all I can see.”

Sammy's mother believes he took his own life because he was constantly bullied, particularly after an unknown incident in a bathroom last week, which left him too scared to go to school days before he died.

His father shared that the bullying “went on for a long time.” It started with kids making fun of Sammy for wearing glasses, and then they made fun of his teeth, he said.

The bullying escalated to physical violence where they would “beat him up on the school bus, and the kids broke his glasses and everything,” the father added.

"He was my little boy. He was my baby. He was the youngest one," the mother told WTHR.

Sammy's family mentioned that the bullying didn't stop at school or on the bus – it even continued online on Snapchat, despite the boy having limited access to his phone. He recalled that the kids would threaten him with texts like, "‘I'm going to beat you up. I'm going to beat you up when you get to school',” and would say “mean things” about his mother which would “really, really set him off”.

The 10-year-old's family claims that they had alerted school authorities about the bullying situation on at least 20 occasions over the past year, yet the harassment did not stop. "I called the school," Sammy Teusch's father recalled, "And I'm like, 'What are you doing about this? It keeps getting worse, and worse, and worse'."

The school district superintendent stated that there were no reports of bullying submitted by either the parents or the boy. But the family of the boy insisted that they had made their fears about the bullying clear to the school, claiming, “they knew this was going on.”

Sammy's grandmother was angry at the district's claims of having a zero-tolerance policy on bullying, claiming that “their zero tolerance means that they don't have responsibility for it”. “People trust their kids at school, but now that trust is breaking down,” she told 21alivenews.

Miniature Poodle Wins Top Prize At Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

A miniature poodle named Sage was crowned "Best in Show" on Tuesday at the 148th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, fetching the grand prize in the most prestigious competition among pure-bred canines in the United States.

The finalist representing all breeds classified as non-sporting dogs, Sage emerged victorious from more than 2,500 top-ranked canines competing in a two-day contest, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in the Queens borough of New York City.

Sage, a 4-year-old black-colored female groomed in the fine, fluffy topiary style traditional for poodles, competed head to head against the winners in six other groups - terriers, hounds, herding dogs, working dogs, sporting dogs and toy dogs.

She was the first female to win the top prize at Westminster since 2020, according to commentators on the Fox Sports channel, which broadcast the event live.

The Westminster dog show bills itself as the second-oldest U.S. sporting event, behind only the Kentucky Derby thoroughbred horse race. This year's competition drew a field of contenders representing 200 breeds from all 50 U.S. states and 12 other countries.

Mercedes, a female 4-year-old German shepherd, was named runner-up for the overall contest, after first winning the top prize in the herding dog group.

Along with Sage and Mercedes, the two other finalists chosen on Monday were Comet the Shih Tzu, representing the toy group, and Louis, the Afghan hound leading the hound group.

Rounding out the finalists were three group winners chosen on Tuesday - Micah the black cocker spaniel, representing sporting dogs; Monty, the giant schnauzer, leading the working dogs; and Frankie, a colored bull terrier from the terrier group.

US And Taiwan Navies Quietly Held Pacific Drills In April: Report

The U.S. and Taiwan navies conducted joint drills in the Pacific in April that, officially, did not take place, four people briefed on the matter said, as the two militaries boost cooperation amid rising Chinese military threats.

Washington and Taipei have been expanding their military cooperation in recent years amid almost daily Chinese incursions into Taiwan's air defence identification zone and drills by Chinese forces near the island.

U.S.-Taiwan military engagement, including visits and training, are kept low-key and are often not officially confirmed because of China's objection to any military contacts between Washington and Taipei. China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, which the island strongly rejects.

The drills, which were not publicised, took place last month in the Western Pacific, according to the sources, who requested anonymity given the sensitivity of the matter.

One source said "multiple military assets" were involved. A second source said the drills did not officially exist and were dubbed "unplanned sea encounters", pointing to a tacit agreement in which both sides claim the exercises were simply the result of coincidental encounters.

"It's like I am dining in this restaurant and you also happen to be here," the source said. "Then it looks like I am only sharing the same table with someone."

That source also said about half a dozen navy ships from both sides, including frigates and supply and support vessels, participated in the days-long exercises, which were designed to practice "basic" operations such as communications, refuelling and resupply.

Taiwan's navy said in a statement to Reuters that to handle unexpected scenarios at sea and to minimise "interference" with each another, the navy "acts in concert with the U.S.-promoted Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea", also known as CUES.

"The Navy often makes contact with vessels of other countries and conducts encounter drills as needed," the statement said, without elaborating.

The Pentagon declined to comment.

Taiwan and the United States have no official diplomatic relationship, as Washington formally recognises Beijing but is bound by law to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself and is the island's most important international backer.

A third source said although the "unplanned encounters" of the two navies involved mostly basic exercises, such drills are vital to ensure the two militaries can operate together in times of emergency.

CUES was formulated about a decade ago to help de-escalate tensions between militaries at sea, providing guidelines such as safe speeds and distances, a common communications language, and what actions to take if a ship becomes disabled.

Taiwan's navy chief, Tang Hua, last month visited the United States and discussed how to boost bilateral naval cooperation, Reuters reported. In response, China's foreign ministry said it firmly opposed "military collusion" between the United States and Taiwan.

This month, Taiwan's Chief of the General Staff Admiral Mei Chia-shu attended the change-of-command ceremony for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command in Hawaii, which only came to light after he was spotted in the audience in an official picture.

China has long said Taiwan is China's most sensitive territorial issue, which is a major bone of contention in Sino-U.S. ties.

Beijing has not renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control, while Taipei says the Chinese territorial claims are void as the People's Republic of China has never governed the island.

Video: Collapsed Baltimore Bridge Blown Up In Controlled Demolition

A controlled precision-cut demolition was conducted to break down a large steel section of a collapsed bridge in Baltimore, US state of Maryland, aiming to free the cargo ship Dali that hit and destroyed the bridge in March from the fallen structure.

Brandon M Scott, Mayor of Baltimore, thanked the demolition crew in a post on X on Monday, for their "flawless, safe execution of these precision cuts" as quoted by Xinhua news agency report.

"This is an important milestone in our effort to clear the channel. We're going to get it done the right way -- together," he noted.

The demolition has been postponed twice to Monday evening due to the weather.

"The safest and swiftest method to remove the bridge piece from on top of the M/V Dali is by precision cuts made with small charges," said the Key Bridge Response Unified Command, which coordinates response operations to the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse, in a statement last week, adding that "This is an industry-standard tool in controlled demolition that will break the span into smaller pieces, which will allow the work of refloating the vessel and removing it from the federal channel".

The 2.6-km-long Francis Scott Key Bridge, a major bridge that held Interstate 695, collapsed on March 26 after being hit by a large container ship, which experienced a power failure before the collision.

Eight people initially went into the water after the incident occurred and two of them were rescued from the Patapsco river, with one in critical condition.

Six road maintenance workers, reportedly on the bridge repairing potholes, were killed in the tragic event.

Officials said last Tuesday that they recovered the body of the sixth and final worker who had been missing after the bridge collapse.
