Jack Dorsey Quits Instagram After 12 Years, Elon Musk Reacts

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey and former Chief Executive Officer of the social media platform, has quit Mark Zuckerberg's Instagram. Mr Dorsey announced his decision on X, formerly Twitter, saying he had deleted his Instagram account and gone "Meta free."

"Deleted my instagram account after 12 years. was one of the first 10 accounts I believe, and one of the first angel investors," Mr Dorsey wrote in a post on August 18. He continued, "who will they give the @jack handle to?"

While replying to a user's query on whether he still has a Facebook account, he said that he has no presence on any of Meta's social networking platforms. "No. Or WhatsApp clear eyes, meta free, can't lose," he added. Another X user questioned Mr Dorsey's decision, however, the entrepreneur simply stated, "All the reasons are too meta to be interesting."

This decision of Mr Dorsey caught billionaire Elon Musk's eye and he responded with a fire emoji in the comments section. Several users also questioned whether Mr Dorsey would continue to stay on Elon Musk's newly rebranded platform.

In the year 2020, Mr Dorsey stated that he does not use Facebook products and takes "different approaches" to Mr Zuckerberg. The entrepreneur revealed the same in Rich Kleiman's podcast, 'The Boardroom: Out of Office'. He said, "I don't really use an Instagram. I love what Snapchat has innovated around, I think they're phenomenal. I don't use a lot of Facebook products-any, actually."

In July, after the launch of Meta's Threads, Mr Dorsey took a swipe at Mr Zuckerberg after the latter sent him a follow request on the new platform. Taking to Twitter, Mr Dorsey posted a screenshot where one can see Mr Zuckerberg's follow request to him. "Too soon b," he wrote in the caption of the post.

He had also bashed Meta's product over the similarity it shared with Twitter, now X. He said, "We wanted flying cars, instead we got 7 Twitter clones" in response to a post that pointed out that there are several social media networks which look similar to the platform founded by him. The applications in the post included Meta's Threads, Twitter, Jack Dorsey's new platform Bluesky, Mastodon and Post News.

X Could Be Delisted From App Stores If Block Feature Removed

Elon Musk on Friday said that users of X, formerly known as Twitter, will no longer be able to block others on the platform. The announcement has caused uproar as the ‘blocking' feature helps avoid unwanted and spam posts from specific accounts and allows users to control their experience. Removing the feature could also violate the guidelines of Google's PlayStore and Apple's App Store and may result in Twitter getting delisted from these stores.

What does blocking mean on Twitter

Blocking is a tool that helps users in “restricting specific accounts from contacting them, seeing their Tweets, and following them.” The feature allows users to control how they want to interact on the platform and helps curb stalking, harassment, and bullying among other issues.

When a user blocks an account on Twitter then that account will not be able to follow that person anymore or view or find his/her tweets. A person also cannot view the following, followers list, likes and lists user who has blocked him. A blocked user is also not allowed to tag the other person in a photo. Blocking also means that you will no longer receive direct messages from the person you have blocked.

All these features will be gone if Elon Musk proceeds to do away with the blocking function. However, the billionaire has said that Twitter will still allow blocking DMs. “Block is going to be deleted as a “feature”, except for DMs,” Musk tweeted on Friday.

“It makes no sense,” he added in a follow-up tweet.

What app stores' rules state?

Twitter could face trouble by removing the blocking feature as it could violate the terms and conditions stated by App Store and PlayStore pertaining to user-generated content.

According to Google PlayStore, apps that contain or feature user-generated content (UGC), which include platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Threads, must implement robust, effective, and ongoing UGC moderation. Google describes UGC as the content which is contributed to an app by users and which is accessible by “at least a subset of the app's users”.

The PlayStore states that such apps must provide an “in-app system for reporting objectionable UGC and users” and take “action against that UGC and/or user where appropriate”. PlayStore also requires apps containing UGC to provide an “in-app system for blocking UGC and users”.

Apple's App Store too states certain rules for apps that contain or feature user-generated content. The App Store says that these apps must include “the ability to block abusive users from the service”, “a method for filtering objectionable material from being posted to the app”, and “a mechanism to report offensive content and timely responses to concerns”.

Violating these rules could put Twitter at the risk of being removed from app stores.

Lucy Letby: 5 Points On Killer British Nurse

  1. Lucy Letby was born in Hereford, in central England. She completed a nursing degree at Chester University in northwest England, and after qualifying, she began to work in the neonatal unit of the city's Countess of Chester Hospital.
  2. Lucy Letby was arrested following a string of baby deaths at the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital in northwest England between June 2015 and June 2016. She was first arrested in July 2018, and then again in June 2019 and November 2020.
  3. Prosecutors said Letby attacked 17 babies who had been on the ward. Mostly, she was accused of injecting air into their bloodstream or stomachs, or giving them excessive milk. The police said they had been unable to find a motive for the attacks.
  4. Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Evans, the deputy senior investigating officer, described Letby as "beige". "She had a healthy social life, she had a circle of friends, she had her parents and holidays; and there isn't anything unusual in any of that; there isn't anything that we have found that has been unusual," Evans said. She said there was nothing the police could find that was unusual for a woman of her age at that point in her life.
  5. Police said they were reviewing Letby's career prior to the period covered by the charges, at the Countess of Chester Hospital and at the Liverpool Women's Hospital, where she had spent part of her training. Detectives are looking at the more than 4,000 admissions made into the two hospitals' neonatal units from 2012 to 2016.

As UK Births Hit 20-Year Low, Indian-Born Parents Take Record Share

The number of babies born in England and Wales fell to its lowest level in two decades last year, while a record proportion came from parents who were both born abroad, highlighting a long-term shift in the nation's demographic makeup.

Of all live births, 23.1% were to non-UK-born parents - a proportion that has shot up from 16.7% in 2008, and is up from 21.5% a year ago, according to census data released Thursday by the Office for National Statistics.

The figures also showed the share of babies born to British parents has slipped, from 62% to 60.3%, and the overall number of births sank to 605,479. That's the lowest since 2002, and points toward slower population growth that could be a drag on both the economy and labor market in the decades ahead.

The "increase in the number of non-UK born mothers is a good thing" given the UK's own falling birth rate, said Jonathan Portes, professor of economics and public policy at King's College London. But declining numbers of overall births is the "real story here," he said, adding that it's a "serious long-term social problem for us."

The rising number of births to foreign parents could help ease fears that the UK will face a labor supply crunch as its population ages and retirees out-pace the rate at which new workers come into jobs. But polling suggests migration is still an important concern for British voters.

More than half of the public favor a cut in immigration, according to a recent survey by Kantar and the Migration Observatory. That suggests rising numbers of births to migrant families could be a thorny issue for both major political parties as they face the prospect of a general election next year.

Nuni Jorgensen, a researcher at the Migration Observatory, pointed out that even while migrant parents were having more children than UK-born families, they still weren't having enough to replace the number of older people dropping out of the workforce.

So-called "replacement-level fertility," or the number of children each woman needs to have to replace the older generation, is currently 2.1, Jorgensen said. "We can see that for both UK born and non-UK born women, fertility rates are below replacement level."

The number of children born to parents who were both from abroad hit 139,953 last year, up from 134,308 a year earlier and its highest level since 2017. Numbers have remained relatively flat for births involving one non-UK-born parent, while births to two UK-born parents have fallen to 365,111, the lowest level in comparable data going back to 2008.

The ONS data suggests fertility rates are falling. More women are choosing not to have children either for professional reasons or financial concerns, as the UK remains embroiled in a cost-of-living crisis.

A rise in the number of people immigrating to the UK in recent years is likely to have led to the jump in migrant parents in 2022. A record 606,000 more people moved to Britain than departed last year, boosted by humanitarian programs and demand for workers whose skills were in short supply.

India overtook Romania as the most common country of birth of foreign new mothers, after a third of all third of residence visas were granted to Indian nationals. Afghanistan also entered the top 10 for the first time, after the UK formally opened the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme at the start of 2022.

India also replaced Pakistan as the most common country of birth for non-UK-born new fathers. Pakistan had held the top spot since comparable data began in 2008.

In London, more than two thirds of births were to parents where at least one was from outside the UK. The highest percentages were seen in Brent, Westminster, Newham and Harrow, at more than 80% of births.

Outside of London, the Berkshire town of Slough and the Bedfordshire town of Luton were the areas with the highest rate of births to at least one migrant parent, at 75% and 74.6% respectively.

Further away from the capital, Oxford and Leicester saw the highest percentages at 65.9% and 65% respectively.
