Rare Photo Captures Earth And 7 Planets For The First Time Ever

In a groundbreaking feat, photographer Josh Dury, 27, also known as the "Starman", is believed to have captured the first-ever image of all seven planets, plus Earth, in a single frame. This rare opportunity arose due to a rare celestial event known as the "great planetary parade", which occurs when all eight planets align – a phenomenon that hasn't happened since 1982. Mr Dury, an award-winning astronomical photographer, snapped the panoramic photo from Somerset's Mendip Hills on February 22, potentially making history with this extraordinary image.

Watch the images here:

How did he capture it?

To capture the elusive trio of Mercury, Saturn, and Neptune, Mr Dury employed a meticulous technique. He created a panoramic image by stitching together multiple "panes". For the specific pane featuring these three planets, he used a dual-exposure approach: one base exposure and another with increased exposure and ISO to coax out the faint light from the dimmer planets.

To verify their positions, he cross-referenced the image with plain sphere maps. Dury's equipment of choice for this remarkable shot included a Sony A7S II camera paired with a Sigma 15mm Diagonal Fisheye lens.

Mr Dury told The Telegraph: "I managed to capture a panorama image of the seven planets, AKA - the planetary parade. It is made of nine images, revealing Saturn, Mercury and Neptune. They were very tricky to spot. I used multiple image analysis and astronomy apps to confirm their location As this was taken with a wide-angle lens, the nine images stitched to a panorama and a HDR blend of one of the frames to reveal Saturn, Neptune and Mercury. These three planets are not easy to see at all."

"Being close to the sun and in the attempt to photograph them as soon as they were readily visible, the relative positions of these three planets are slightly misaligned due to their approximate visibility from the imaging location and low western cloud," Mr Dury explained.

All About the Planetary Parade

Notably, the celestial spectacle known as the "planetary parade" is nearing its climax.

Astronomers define planetary alignment as the phenomenon where multiple planets converge on one side of the Sun simultaneously. This alignment can involve anywhere from three to eight planets. While smaller alignments are relatively common, larger ones are more rare. Specifically, five-planet alignments are more frequent than six-planet alignments, but the rarest and most extraordinary occurrence is when all seven planets align, making it a truly exceptional celestial event.

On February 28, a rare and fleeting moment will occur when all planets in our solar system will be visible in the night sky. Following the alignment of Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune between January 21-29, this event will mark the last time until 2040 that all seven planets, including Mercury, will converge to create a breathtaking night sky display.

Planetary Parade: Visibility in India

The planetary alignment will be visible across India. Most cities will be able to witness this rare event. Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Uranus will be visible to the naked eye. However, you will need a telescope to see Mercury, Saturn and Neptune, as they will be faint.

'Largest Crypto Heist In History': North Korea Behind $1.5 Billion Theft

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday accused North Korea of being behind the theft of $1.5 billion worth of digital assets last week, the largest crypto heist in history.

"(North Korea) was responsible for the theft of approximately $1.5 billion USD in virtual assets from cryptocurrency exchange, Bybit," the FBI said in a public service announcement.

The bureau said a group called TraderTraitor, also known as the Lazarus Group, was behind the theft.

It said they were "proceeding rapidly and have converted some of the stolen assets to Bitcoin and other virtual assets dispersed across thousands of addresses on multiple blockchains".

"It is expected these assets will be further laundered and eventually converted to fiat currency," the FBI added.

Lazarus Group gained notoriety a decade ago when it was accused of hacking into Sony Pictures as revenge for "The Interview," a film that mocked North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

North Korea's cyber-warfare program dates back to at least the mid-1990s.

It has since grown to a 6,000-strong cyber-warfare unit known as Bureau 121 that operates from several countries, according to a 2020 US military report.

Elon Musk's Net Worth Dips $22 Billion Amid Market Scare Over DOGE, Tariffs

Elon Musk's net worth fell by $22.2 billion Tuesday - his fourth-largest one-day loss - as stock markets faltered on skepticism about potential tariffs and ongoing federal cost-cutting efforts.

Tesla Inc, which makes up more than half of Musk's fortune, was particularly hard hit after reports that its sales in Europe - where Musk's favorability has tumbled as he's inserted himself into domestic politics - plunged by almost half in January. Shares of the electric carmaker fell by 8.4% in New York, sending its market value below $1 trillion for the first time since November 7.

The Trump administration's most prominent policies - including federal budget cuts and tariffs - haven't yet generated the booming stock market the president promised on the campaign trail. The S&P 500 Index has dropped 3.1% over the last four trading days, and the Magnificent 7 Index, which tracks seven megacap tech companies, tumbled into a correction on Tuesday.

Musk has spearheaded the effort to cut government spending through the Department of Government Efficiency. Its website shows the department has saved an estimated $65 billion, or slightly less than 1% of the 2024 federal budget, though data shows less.

Those efforts have roiled Washington, sparking over a dozen lawsuits and leaving federal workers unclear about their job security. Earlier Tuesday, 21 DOGE workers resigned, saying in a joint letter that they would no longer "dismantle critical public services."

Trump's renewed commitment to enact tariffs on Canada and Mexico and reciprocal tariffs on other trading partners also contributed to the market selloff. Inflation expectations over the coming year increased to the highest in almost two years, while US consumer confidence fell this month by the most since August 2021.

Even with Tuesday's decline to a net worth of $358 billion, Musk is still about $100 billion richer than he was before Trump won the election in November, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Thanks to record-high funding rounds for his private companies and a blistering Tesla rally that saw it reach a record before its recent selloff, Musk's net worth reached an all-time high of $486.4 billion on December 17.

Watch: Blue Ghost Shares Incredible Footage Of Dark Side Of The Moon

Days before it makes a landing attempt on the moon, Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost spacecraft has shared some stunning visuals of the lunar surface. It entered the Moon's orbit earlier this month, capturing footage of the dark side from 120 km above the surface.

The new footage, shared on Firefly Aerospace's official X handle, features a close-up of the moon's far side, an area not visible from Earth. The video displays the moon's stony surface speckled with impact craters.

The side note read, "Earthrise, Earth set, repeat! Blue Ghost's third and final lunar orbit maneuver is complete! Early this morning, our #GhostRiders performed a 16-second burn with our RCS thrusters to enter a near-circular low lunar orbit."

It added, "Up next, we'll perform a 19-second Descent Orbit Insertion at our 100-km perilune to begin our descent to Blue Ghost's final destination, Mare Crisium, on March 2."

“The latest Moon footage captured by Firefly's Blue Ghost lunar lander is completely surreal,” said Joseph Marlin, Blue Ghost deputy chief engineer.

“Of course, we had an idea of how the imagery would look, but seeing the real-life footage of the Moon's craters and boulders from our very own spacecraft is such an inspiration, and really hits home how close we are to our final destination after all the hard work we've put into this mission,” he told CNN.

Blue Ghost set off on its journey from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, US on January 15. After separating from the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, it established communications with the company's Mission Operations Center in Cedar Park, Texas.

As part of its journey, it spent approximately 25 days in Earth orbit, four days in lunar transit, then 16 days in lunar orbit.

Once it successfully lands in Mare Crisium, Blue Ghost will operate 10 NASA payloads for a complete lunar day, which is roughly 14 days on Earth. It is expected to support several science and technology demonstrations such as sample collection, X-ray imaging, lunar subsurface drilling and dust mitigation.

Opinion: Trump's European Snub: A U-Turn On Ukraine, Nixing NATO

As we mark three years of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, here's a look at Trump 2.0's Europe shakedown and his move to seek a rapprochement with Russia.

United States President Donald Trump's recent initiative on Ukraine did many things in one go—from widening the Atlantic to fording the oceanic divide with Russia. It also underlined the age-old aphorism: “one week is a long time in politics”, overlaying it against his own earlier “truthful hyperbole” of stopping the Russia-Ukraine conflict “in a day”.

His race against the clock began in earnest on Wednesday, February 12, with an hour-long call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a Western doghouse for his invasion of Ukraine. Six days later, on February 18, the action shifted to Riyadh, the Saudi Capital, where American and Russian Foreign Ministers held their first bilateral talks in three years. These lasted four hours and were mostly aimed at de-escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and a rapprochement between Moscow and Washington. While no immediate breakthroughs were announced, the two sides broadly agreed to pursue three goals: to restore staffing at their respective embassies, to create a high-level team to support Ukraine peace talks; to explore closer relations and economic cooperation, as well as readmitting Russia to G7+1. Even a Trump-Putin Summit at a hitherto unspecified date was hinted at.

A Clear Message To Ukraine

An even bigger impact of these events in Week Four of Trump 2.0 was felt in Europe, particularly by Ukraine being conspicuously kept out of the loop – leading to its President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, indignantly declaring that Ukraine was not bound to honour any solution to the conflict reached without her participation. Moreover, the Trump administration also pressed Ukraine for a bilateral agreement providing the US companies preferential access to its natural resources, including rare earth elements to reimburse the American aid, put at $500 billion that sustained its conflict with Russia. The agreement terms were reportedly rejected by President Zelenskyy, insisting on American security guarantees for Ukraine. (For the record, the total aid allocations by all donor governments to Ukraine during the war as of Dec 2024 amount to €267 billion, or about €80 billion per year. In particular, the US and Europe each rendered almost equal amounts of around €63 billion in military support. Europe surpassed the US in financial and humanitarian aid allocations (€70 billion vs. €50 billion).

'A Modestly Successful Comedian'

These tense exchanges were further weaponised with President Trump calling President Zelenskyy “a modestly successful comedian” who is “a dictator with only a 4% approval rating”. He even blamed President Zelenskiy for starting the war. Zelenskyy, in turn, accused Trump of living under the Russian misinformation space. In a recent speech at the Munich Security Conference, US Vice President J.D. Vance declared that the Ukrainian demands to join NATO and return all its territories from Russia were “unrealistic”. Separately, President Trump ruled out sending US troops to Ukraine. One is entitled to wonder if the current Washington-Kiev pyrotechnics were noisier than the ones on the killing fields of Ukraine.

Although Donald Trump has never made a secret of his intention to seek a rapprochement with Russia, the speed, context and manner Trump 2.0 has undertaken this drive has shocked the European members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Firstly, it was an article of faith for them that NATO, with the US underpinning, would collectively protect them from Russia. Many of them also believed that Ukraine was fighting their war and joined in with the Biden administration to support and sustain Kyiv militarily and in myriad other ways. They were horrified by the unilateralism and alacrity shown by Trump 2.0 to swing the pendulum to another extreme and fast-forward mending its fences with Russia, without even a nod and wink towards them.

The 'Threat From Within'

Secondly, Trump & Co. have hectored the European NATO members about “threat from within” for accepting large-scale immigration and indulging in ill-conceived liberalism. He also put them on notice that the US would not continue to do the heavy lifting for Western Europe's defence. They must stop “ripping off” the US and raise their defence outlays to 5% of the GDP from less than 2% at the moment. While such American moralising is not new, the Trump 2.0 unilateral actions and conditioned utterances have seared the European establishments. They also question the US airing the concessions on NATO and Ukraine even before the beginning of the formal negotiations with Russia. They point out that they are currently tackling economic headwinds amidst the rise of the extreme right. They have been rudely shaken by the prospects of deterring a resurgent Russia without the Pentagon's anchor. While the large five West European NATO members express their resolve to continue supporting Ukraine and pledged $20 billion in assistance, there is perceptible panic in the Russia-facing part of the 32-member alliance at the prospect of their ‘Finlandisation'. At a fundamental level, this chasm across the Atlantic shakes up the 75-year-old collective security architecture enshrined in NATO.

Russia has, perhaps deliberately, addled this witches' brew by declaring that it intends to make no concessions, territorially or otherwise. Moscow has also intensified its military campaign with the apparent aim of leveraging the rift in the NATO alliance, and shortages of Ukrainian manpower and defence equipment. In particular, they hope to liberate a part of the Kursk salient that Ukraine overran last autumn to prevent it from being used as a bargaining chip at the negotiation. Moscow has ruled out NATO troops in any form for peacekeeping in Ukraine.

Madman Negotiations?

Trump's bark is often worse than his bite, and his over-the-top opening overtures are part of a gaming ‘madman negotiating strategy' to awe the opponent into making concessions. However, Trump 1.0 is replete with disastrous stratagems, including a tariff war with China, engagements with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and an Afghanistan troop withdrawal agreement with the Taliban, all showing the naivety of his transactional approach to geopolitics.

As we mark three years of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it's easy to see its calamitous impact on the two combatant nations. While the estimates vary wildly, the cumulative combined losses of the two armed forces in the past three years are estimated at around 150,000. A similar number of civilian deaths or missing, mostly Ukrainians is speculated. They have suffered enormous economic losses: Ukraine's losses due to war damage have made it Europe's poorest GDP per capita country. Russia's much bigger economy has also suffered as it faced headwinds from over 21,000 Western sanctions in the wake of its aggression, distorting its longstanding global symbiosis and requiring its economic and commercial reorientation.

Forced To Take Sides

The war has had profound and multisector regional and global impacts ranging from lower growth, higher inflation, a spurt in weapon transfers, and disrupted supply chains, particularly of hydrocarbons, agro-commodities, precious stones and metals, etc. It has caused economic deglobalisation and political repolarisation the world over, with most countries resenting being corralled into taking sides.

As geostrategic chips begin falling, a possible solution may freeze the conflict without a long-term resolution of the contentious underlying complexities. Russia would most likely retain a fifth of Ukrainian territories, mostly Russian-speaking areas of the east already under its control. While Ukraine would not join NATO, it would be offered a consolation prize in the form of security guarantees through a UN Security Council resolution. An EU membership and a dollop of post-war reconstruction assistance may also be on the cards for a 'Finlandised' Ukraine. Cynically, it may suit most stakeholders to cast Zelenskyy as a “useful idiot” to be blamed for the bloody conflict and replaced. The process of Russia's reintegration with the West would resume, impetused more by the need to wean it away from West's baddies such as China, Iran and North Korea than for any genuine change of hearts.

Will The Conflict Really End?

Either way, the Ukraine-Russia conflict, the first war in Europe since 1945, may have a profound long-term impact. The bruised combatants may lick their wounds and continue their conflict through non-military means. Buffeted by Russian triumphalism and US isolationism, Europe may see realignments. At one extreme, a siege mentality may force Europe into combined militarisation with the UK, France and Turkey among the beneficiaries. Depending on external stimuli, a vertical division into pro-US and pro-Russia camps can also not be ruled out. Countries of the former Soviet Union with sizable Russian minorities may need to “manage” them better than Ukraine did.

The conflict's resolution offers many discerning lessons. Firstly, as the US volte face has shown, international alliances are often unreliable and duplicitous. Secondly, extensive usage of new weapon systems such as killer drones and hypersonic missiles, involvement of foreign troops and mercenaries, extensive psycho-war operations and targeting of civilian infrastructure have created several ‘new normals' for future conflicts. Thirdly, disastrous miscalculations galore from the quick end to Russia's “Limited Special Military Operation” to counterproductive Ukrainian “counteroffensive” are testaments to the continued unpredictability of a conflict even in the current era of near complete technical openness. Lastly, in case the US-Russia modus vivendi holds, Washington may offer carrots to Moscow on such regional issues as containment of China, Iran's nuclear programme, oil prices, the Middle East crisis and production of critical minerals.

What India Should Learn

As far as India is concerned, an early end to the Ukrainian conflict would be conducive to our interests. It would buttress our strategic autonomy by removing the sharpest pain point in our ties with Russia and the United States. It would lessen Russia's dependence on China. Lifting the Western economic sanctions would enable us to boost our economic interactions with Russia. While Russian oil may not be offered to us at a discount, global oil prices are likely to decline as supplies improve. However, for us, the most significant takeaway from the Russia-Ukraine episode is the disruption of the foreign supply chains and financial transaction mechanisms during the conflict. It should reinforce our campaign for 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) in these and other critical areas.

Vasundhara Oswal: The Billionaire's Daughter Who Was Detained In Uganda

Vasundhara Oswal, daughter of Indian-origin billionaire Pankaj Oswal, was last year detained in Uganda for three weeks on false charges of kidnapping and murdering her father's former employee, who was later found alive in Tanzania. Arrested on October 1, she was granted bail only on October 21.

Ms Oswal, 26, was kept in a high-security prison alongside convicted murderers and human traffickers.

Who is Vasundhara Oswal?

  1. Vasundhara Oswal is the daughter of business tycoons Pankaj and Radhika Oswal, who own the multibillion-dollar Oswal Group Global. She lives in Villa Vari, one of the world's most expensive homes, worth over $200 million, overlooking Mt. Blanc in Switzerland. The house was designed by renowned interior designer Jeffrey Wilkes.
  2. She graduated with a Bachelor's in Finance with Honours from a prestigious university in Switzerland.
  3. In 2020, she joined the board of PRO Industries, making history as the organisation's first female lead. She currently serves as the Executive Director (Finance) of PRO Industries, overseeing investment strategy and plant development. She is also the Director General of Axis Minerals, one of the largest bauxite mining projects in Guinea, which holds 884 million tons of bauxite. Under her leadership, PRO Industries and Axis Minerals have completed major expansion projects, reduced debt, and launched sustainability programmes.
  4. She successfully integrated a commercially viable Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) programme at PRO Industries, ensuring 100 per cent wastewater recycling. She established a CO2 capture facility that sells CO2 to the beverage sector, aligning with her ecological and sustainability goals. She has led social initiatives, including installing drinking water facilities and roads in East Africa for underprivileged communities.
  5. She has received multiple accolades, including Inspiring Woman of the Year by The Economic Times and the Global Youth Icon Award in 2023. She was also featured in Femina India in 2023.

Speaking to news agency PTI on Friday, Vasundhara Oswal called her imprisonment a "gross violation of human rights," alleging she was denied food, water, and even access to a washroom.

"My parents had to bribe police officers through lawyers to bring me food, water and basic necessities," she claimed.

She also accused the Ugandan police of searching her premises without a warrant and coercing her into giving a statement without legal representation. Despite submitting a police bond and the allegedly dead employee being found alive on October 10, she remained in custody until her release.

Who Is Adam Schiff, Senator Whose Remark On Kash Patel Angered Elon Musk

US Senator Adam Schiff was among the fiercest critics of Kash Patel's nomination as FBI director, calling him a "political hack" and a "sycophant" unfit for the role. Despite strong opposition from Democrats, the Senate on Thursday confirmed Patel to lead the nation's top federal law enforcement agency. About half a dozen Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats gathered outside FBI headquarters earlier that day in a final attempt to block his confirmation.

"This is someone we cannot trust," said Senator Schiff of California. "This is someone who lacks the character to do this job, someone who lacks the integrity to do this job," he said, adding that even Republicans knew it.

"The only qualification Kash Patel has to be FBI director is that when everyone else in the first Trump administration said 'no, I won't do that, that crosses moral, ethical, legal lines,' Kash Patel said sign me up," said Mr Schiff.

Adam Schiff's sharp criticism has sparked speculation that he may be added to the list of "enemies" Kash Patel mentioned in his 2023 book Government Gangsters. Mr Patel, did not hold back in his response to Mr Schiff's comments. "Adam Schiff is the worst criminal in Congress in the last 250 years," he said. Billionaire Elon Musk echoed this, saying, "Adam Schiff is a criminal."

Who is Adam Schiff?

Adam Schiff was born in Framingham, Massachusetts. He attended Monte Vista High School in Danville, California. Mr Schiff went on to study at Stanford University and later earned a law degree from Harvard Law School.

After graduating from law school, he moved to Los Angeles to work as a law clerk for Judge William Matthew Byrne, Jr. He later joined the US Attorney's Office in Los Angeles as a federal prosecutor. During his six-year tenure, he prosecuted Richard Miller, the first FBI agent indicted for spying for Russia. He also established one of the first federal environmental crimes units in the office.

In 1996, Adam Schiff was elected to the California State Senate as its youngest member. During his term, he introduced the Schiff-Cardenas Juvenile Justice Crime Prevention Act of 2000, which funded programmes to keep at-risk youth out of prison.

His efforts to expand the Metro Gold Line earned him the nickname "Father of the Gold Line."

In 2000, Adam Schiff was elected to the US House of Representatives, serving on key committees, including Judiciary, Foreign Affairs, and Intelligence, where he later became chairman.

He led the first impeachment inquiry against US President Donald Trump and was a vocal critic of Russia's election interference. He also pushed for sanctions against Russia after its invasion of Ukraine. As House Intelligence Committee chair, he pushed for deeper probes, facing criticism from Republicans. In 2023, the House pushed to punish him for spreading what they called false claims, but he denied any wrongdoing.

In 2024, Adam Schiff was elected to the US Senate, representing California.

Mr Schiff was instrumental in getting Congress to formally recognise the Armenian Genocide in 2019. He championed the Protecting Our Democracy Act, which aimed to prevent presidential abuse of power.

Indian Student Wins Memory Contest By Recalling 80 Digits In 13.5 Seconds

A 20-year-old Indian student, Vishvaa Rajakumar, has won the Memory League World Championship by recalling the order of cards, numbers, names, images, and words. Mr Rajakumar was able to remember the order of 80 random digits in just 13.50 seconds. He was even able to recall 30 images in just 8.53 seconds, as per the official website of Memory League World Championship.

Mr Rajakumar, who is from Manakula Vinayagar Institute of Technology in Puducherry, was up against 16 people in the Championship, which is conducted online.

The participants were briefly shown 80 random numbers on the screen. Next, they were required to write those down on the ‘recall sheet'.

As per the official website, "16 competitors from the top of the Memory League world rankings will compete remotely in a double-elimination tournament to determine the 2025 Memory League World Champion. All competitors begin in the Main Bracket. If a competitor loses a match in the Main Bracket, they drop to the Repechage Bracket. If they lose a match in the Repechage Bracket, they are eliminated."

Speaking to the New York Times, Mr Rajakumar opened up about how he prepared for the competition. As per the 20-year-old, the key is "hydration." He said, "Hydration is important because it helps your brain. When you memorise things, you usually sub-vocalise, and it helps to have a clear throat."

"If you don't drink a lot of water, your speed will be a bit low. If you drink a lot of water, it will be clearer and you can read it faster," he added.

When asked about his memory palace, Mr Rajakumar explained that it starts with his room, followed by the kitchen, hall, veranda, and bathroom.

Mr Rajakumar also discussed his plans, including becoming a memory trainer and creating a memory institution in India to teach other people these techniques.

The Memory League World Championship, a fast-paced memory game tournament, was held from January 5 to February 2. Each match in the contest has five rounds and the player who wins the most number of rounds becomes the world champion.

Assam Ends 90-Year-Old 'Namaz Break' Tradition In Assembly

The decades-old Assam Assembly tradition of a two-hour break to facilitate Muslim legislators to offer 'namaz' on Fridays was discontinued for the first time during the ongoing budget session. The decision to do away with the break was taken in the last session of the House in August, but implemented from this sitting.

Expressing dissatisfaction over it, AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam maintained that it was a decision imposed on the strength of numbers.

"There are about 30 Muslim MLAs in the assembly. We had expressed our views against the move. But they (the BJP) have the numbers and are imposing it on the basis of that," Islam said.

Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia of the Congress said provision can be made for the Muslim MLAs to offer 'namaz' nearby on Fridays.

"Today, several of my party colleagues and AIUDF MLAs missed important discussion as they went to offer 'namaz'. Since it is a special prayer requirement only for Fridays, I think a provision can be made for it nearby," he said.

The decision to discontinue the nearly 90-year-old practice was taken by the Rules Committee of the House, headed by the Speaker, in August last year.

Speaker Biswajit Daimary, "in view of the secular nature of the Constitution, had proposed that the Assam Legislative Assembly must conduct its proceedings on Fridays like any other day", which was placed before the Rules Committee and passed unanimously.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had welcomed the decision, stating that it was a practice introduced by the Muslim League's Syed Saadulla in 1937, and the decision to discontinue the break "prioritised productivity and shed another vestige of colonial baggage".

"Not Heard From Them": Trump Claims BRICS "Broke Up" After 150% Tariff Threat

US President Donald Trump on Thursday claimed that the BRICS nations have "broken up", days after he threatened them with 100 per cent tariffs if they tried to seek an alternative for the US dollar.

"BRICS states were trying to destroy our dollar. They wanted to create a new currency. So when I came in, the first thing I said was any BRICS state that even mentions the destruction of the dollar will be charged a 150% tariff, and we don't want your goods and the BRICS states just broke up," the US President said.

Calling it an amazing turnaround, Mr Trump said, "I don't know what the hell happened to them. We haven't heard from the BRICS states lately."

BRICS, formed in 2009, is an intergovernmental organisation made up of 10 countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. This is the only major international group of which the US is not a part. Over the years, the nations have been trying to find an alternative to the US dollar or create their own BRICS currency. If done so, it seems as a way to reduce their reliance on the US dollar as a prominent medium of exchange.

Even before Mr Trump took office, he had threatened to impose tariffs on BRICS nations if they try to introduce alternative currency to the US dollar. Last week, Mr Trump threatened 100 per cent tariff on the BRICS nations and slammed them saying the bloc was created for a "bad purpose".

"BRICS was put there for a bad purpose and most of those people don't want it. They don't even want to talk about it now. They are afraid to talk about it because I told them if they want to play games with the dollar, then they're going to be hit with a 100 per cent tariff," he said.

The US President also claimed that BRICS is "dead".

US Man Quits Corporate Job To Photograph Dogs Around The World

A US man left his corporate job to travel the world and photograph the special bond between dogs and humans. Disenchanted with his 9-to-5 job, lifelong dog lover John Fabiano turned his passion into a full-time career in 2022 and says he's happier than ever.

Originally from Buffalo, New York, Mr Fabiano was always fascinated by the relationship between humans and dogs.

He wanted to document these connections across different cultures. "The way I treat my dog is much different from the way other people treat dogs around the world, so I wanted to get a glimpse of that," he told CNN.

His own relationship with his dog, Viola, has been a guiding force through some of life's toughest moments. During times of uncertainty, he often found direction by simply observing her enthusiasm for life.

He said that whenever he felt stuck, he looked to Viola for inspiration. She was always ready to get up, move, and explore. Following her lead, he spent more time outdoors, took more photos, and felt happier in the process.

"Those are some of the happiest moments for me," Mr Fabiano said.

Until 2020, he didn't even own a camera. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he began improving his photography skills. By 2022, he left his job and committed to travelling the world, capturing "different sections and different relationships that people have with dogs."

He divided his project into four categories - wild dogs, working dogs, purebred dogs, and underdogs.

His first trip was to Germany in March 2023, where he met a woman who owned 10 German Shepherds. He was mesmerised by their bond and felt an instant connection.

After Germany, his next stop was Greenland, where he captured a photo during a sled ride that earned him first place in the documentary category of the Dog Photography Awards in 2024. He later visited Chennai, India, to photograph street dogs.

One of his most memorable trips was to Australia, where he spent 40 days driving around in a campervan with a fellow dog lover, meeting various dogs and their owners.

Although Mr Fabiano has had many incredible experiences photographing dogs, it hasn't always been easy. He admits to having plenty of "horrible photos" of dogs that wouldn't sit still or look at the camera.

"I've loved dogs since I was a little kid... It makes me very happy that my younger self would be proud of what I'm doing today," he said.

Now in his mid-30s, Mr Fabiano has been to 18 countries, with Thailand next on his list.

"Will Check With President": Elon Musk On $5,000 'DOGE Dividend' Plan

James Fishback, the CEO of investment firm Azoria, has proposed the idea of a DOGE Dividend. Mr Fishback, reportedly an outside adviser to DOGE, posted on social media that the proposal would guarantee a $5,000 (Rs 4,34,730) refund to every American taxpayer household, funded by savings from the Department of Government Efficiency.

He wrote on X, "President Trump and @ElonMusk should announce a 'DOGE Dividend'-a tax refund check sent to every taxpayer, funded exclusively with a portion of the total savings delivered by DOGE."

The proposal was met with a positive response from Elon Musk, who heads DOGE under Trump 2.0. The billionaire also said that he would speak with the President.

Mr Fishback, in another tweet, said that American taxpayers deserve a 'DOGE Dividend'. Twenty per cent of the money that DOGE saves should be sent back to hard-working Americans as a tax refund check.

He further said that it was their money in the first place. At $2 trillion in DOGE savings and 78 million tax-paying households, this is a $5,000 refund per household, with the remaining used to pay down the national debt, he added.

"Obviously, the President is the Commander-in-Chief, so this is entirely up to him," Mr Musk said in response to another tweet about the proposed dividend after his comment to Mr Fishback gained popularity.

Mr Fishback thanked Mr Musk, saying, "Honoured that @ElonMusk has expressed interest in our DOGE Dividend proposal for President Trump."

The proposal states that the DOGE Dividend helps taxpayers by compensating them for the misuse of their tax money.

It further argues that it shares the benefits of DOGE's cost savings with American taxpayers, incentivising them to report instances of waste, fraud, and abuse to DOGE. This increases the total amount of savings and the size of their dividend check.

The promise of a $5,000 DOGE Dividend in 2026 will encourage more people to re-enter the labour force in 2025 to qualify for it. Right now, low workforce participation is slowing the US economy, according to the proposal.

The DOGE Dividend would provide a strong incentive for people to return to work, helping to improve this situation, said the proposal.

President Trump appointed Mr Musk as the head of DOGE in November, but the White House stated that the billionaire had no formal authority to make government decisions.

This clarification came after Democratic state attorneys general filed a lawsuit, arguing that Trump's appointment of Musk, who was never elected, violated the Constitution.

"If I Had A Nickel...": Elon Musk's Estranged Daughter On His 13th Child

Vivian Jenna Wilson, the estranged daughter of SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, has claimed that she learnt about her new half-sibling through the social media platform Reddit. The 21-year-old, who came out as transgender a few years ago, reacted to reports of her father's rumoured 13th child with columnist and influencer Ashley St. Clair.

On Threads, Ms Wilson wrote, "If I had a nickel for every time I found out I had a new half-sibling online, I'd have a few nickels-which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened SIX SEPARATE TIMES."

In a follow-up post, Ms Wilson, who does not share a warm relationship with her billionaire father, expressed shock at not knowing how many siblings she has. "Not knowing how many siblings I have goes really hard on 'two truths and a lie,' though I will admit," she added.

Earlier, Ms Wilson found out about her half-sibling, Techno Mechanicus, the son of Musk and his former partner Grimes, on social media.

She said she had no idea then because no one had told her. "I was the last one to find out and was in complete shock. But, I mean, it makes sense," she added.

Born as a male to Elon Musk and his first wife, Justine Wilson, in 2002, Ms Wilson legally changed her name and gender in 2022 and stated that she no longer wished to be related to her biological father in any way, shape, or form.

Mr Musk has not acknowledged his daughter's transition. He still refers to her as his son and has controversially claimed that she was "killed by the woke mind virus."

Last week, Ashley St Clair, a conservative commentator and influencer, claimed that Elon Musk was the father of her newborn.

Explaining why she remained silent until now, she said she was protecting their child's privacy. But when, in recent days, it became clearer that tabloid media intended to reveal the news, regardless of the harm it might cause, she decided to go public.

Ms St Clair also accused Mr Musk of ignoring her private texts but responding to random people on social media.

The SpaceX CEO has yet to accept or deny the claim.

What Is 50501 Movement? Group Behind Protests Against Trump On Presidents' Day

Thousands of protesters gathered at the Capitol and across the US on Presidents Day to demonstrate against Donald Trump's controversial policies. They chanted "No kings on Presidents Day, voicing their opposition to a new bill aimed at ramping up federal immigration enforcement. The protests, organised by the 50501 Movement, were part of an ongoing wave of resistance against Trump and his ally, billionaire Elon Musk, who leads the DOGE, tasked with slashing federal spending.

What is the 50501 movement?

The 50501 (fifty fifty-one) Movement is a political activist group, which aims to unite citizens across the US in resistance to the Trump administration's policies. The name "50501" stands for "50 protests. 50 states. 1 day". The movement was created in response to what organisers view as "anti-democratic and illegal actions" by President Trump, including his executive orders and leadership decisions.

Monday's protests marked the second nationwide campaign by the movement, coming on the heels of controversial executive actions signed by Trump. Through these coordinated protests, the 50501 Movement seeks to challenge the political establishment and advocate for constitutional values.

Originating from the r/50501 subreddit, the movement quickly gained momentum across social media. In a matter of days, grassroots activists - operating without a budget, centralised structure, or official support - managed to organise over 80 peaceful protests in every state, the movement's website revealed. The protests highlighted the movement's call for the American working class to stand up against what they see as the erosion of "democratic institutions, civil liberties, and the rule of law", as fuelled by powerful plutocrats.

Potus Black, an organiser of the DC chapter of the 50501 Movement, urged the protesters to stand together and "uphold the Constitution."

Mr Black talked about the importance of standing behind democracy and reminding elected officials that they serve the people, not themselves. He also addressed the pressure many feel, telling NPR, "The events over the past month have been built to exhaust us, to break our wills. But we are the American people. We will not break."

Protests Across The US

The 50501 Movement organised protests in over half of the states, from California to Tennessee and Massachusetts. In the Northeast, despite freezing temperatures, hundreds gathered in Boston Common, with similar demonstrations in Hartford, New York City, and Trenton.

In Denver, over 1,000 people braved the snow to protest a range of issues, including women's reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, and immigration.

In Knoxville, protesters rallied near a federal courthouse with signs reading "Musk wasn't on the ballot" and "No felons, no Elons." In Iowa, dozens of protesters chanted "President Musk must go!" condemning his role in the government. On the West Coast, Palo Alto protesters targeted Tesla dealerships where Mr Musk is CEO.

Other protests took place in Nashville, Atlanta, and Miami.

"Bought 2nd-Hand WagonR...": Rahane Opens Up On Early Financial Struggles

One of the most renowned names in Indian cricket, Ajinkya Rahane is a name that hardly needs an introduction. The batter played all three formats for India, though it was Test cricket where he truly made a name for himself. Not part of the Indian team in any of the three formats at present, but Rahane hasn't given up hope of an international comeback. While national selection doesn't really remain in Rahane's hands, perseverance does. Having made sacrifices all his life, Rahane knows how to remain calm and wait for his opportunity.

"I used to come from Dombivali, the train journey was the most challenging for me and I used to travel alone from the age of 8 because my father had to go to office," Rahane said in an interview with The Indian Express. "I come from a lower-middle-class family. My mother used to babysit to earn extra money because my father's salary wasn't enough to make ends meet. Those memories are in my mind and that is why I try to be grounded. This fame and money has come only due to this game."

The veteran batter, who has lead the Indian team to some famous wins as a leader, also shared insights into his mindset as a captain.

"I don't like to go into their personal space but as a leader, if I feel I need to tell them anything, I will. I have seen players with talent but wrong choices and wrong friends took them astray. It's important not to forget where we all come from. Many times when a player is having a great run, you see people with them. Suddenly, if things go wrong, the same people vanish. So it is very important to know who your true friends are," he says.

Rahane dug deep in his memory as he recalled those times when he had started to gain attention on the international circuit. The batter revealed that he only bought a second-hand WagonR when he made his India debut.

"This is where my family values came in. They never said don't spend, but they only said if it's needed, do it. I bought a car very late in my life, I used to take a lift from Nilesh Kulkarni, Avishkar Salvi or Pravin Tambe. I bought a second-hand WagonR when I played for India. People said bada car le but for me it was about travelling in comfort. I wanted to invest wisely. After two years, I bought a Honda City," Rahane added.

South Korea Removes DeepSeek From App Stores Amid Pending Privacy Review

Chinese AI app DeepSeek will not be available to download in South Korea pending a review of its handling of user data, Seoul authorities said Monday. DeepSeek's R1 chatbot stunned investors and industry insiders with its ability to match the functions of its Western competitors at a fraction of the cost.

But a number of countries have questioned DeepSeek's storage of user data, which the firm says is collected in "secure servers located in the People's Republic of China".

On Monday, Seoul's Personal Information Protection Commission said DeepSeek would no longer be available for download until a review of its personal data collection practices was carried out.

The Chinese AI firm has "acknowledged that considerations for domestic privacy laws were somewhat lacking", the data protection agency said.

It assessed that bringing the app into line with local privacy laws "would inevitably take a significant amount of time", the agency added.

"To prevent further concerns from spreading, the commission recommended that DeepSeek temporarily suspend its service while making the necessary improvements," it said.

DeepSeek has "accepted" that proposal.

'Use with caution'

The app was removed from local app stores on Saturday at 6:00 pm (0900 GMT) and remains unavailable.

The AI chatbot is still in use for those who have already downloaded the app.

Seoul's data protection agency said it "strongly advised" people to "use the service with caution until the final results are announced".

That included "refraining from entering personal information into the DeepSeek input field", it said.

Analyst Youm Heung-youl told AFP that the firm was yet to lay out a privacy policy "specifically tailored" for users in South Korea.

"It has on the other hand disclosed a privacy policy for the EU and certain other countries, stating that it complies with the domestic laws of those nations," Youm, a data security professor at Soonchunhyang University, said.

"Deepseek needs to establish a privacy policy specific to Korea," he said.

This month, a slew of South Korean government ministries and police said they blocked access to DeepSeek on their computers.

Italy has also launched an investigation into DeepSeek's R1 model and blocked it from processing Italian users' data.

Australia has banned DeepSeek from all government devices on the advice of security agencies.

US lawmakers have also proposed a bill to ban DeepSeek from being used on government devices over concerns about user data security.

In response to the bans, the Chinese government has said it opposes the "politicisation of economic, trade and technological issues".

It also insists it "has never and will never require enterprises or individuals to illegally collect or store data".

After Russia's Military Build-Up, Zelenskyy Calls To Create A European Army

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for the creation of a European Army in response to Russia's military build-up, Politico reported.

In his speech at the Munich Security Conference (MSC), Zelenskyy also raised suspicion of a possibility that the US might say "no" to Europe on issues that might pose a threat to it.

"I really believe that the time has come for Europe to create its own armed forces, " the Ukrainian President said. He added, "Let's be honest, now we can't rule out that America might say 'no' to Europe on issues that might threaten it."

According to a Politico report, Zelenskyy stressed that Europe needed to unite and have a single foreign and defence policy that would show the US that the bloc is serious about its own security.

He said, "Europe has everything it takes. It just needs to come together and start acting so that no one can say 'no' to it, boss it around, or treat it like a pushover."

He said that despite facing battlefield losses, Russian President Vladimir Putin is adding 150,000 soldiers to his armed forces, which is said to be larger than the majority of European armies, and is opening army recruitment offices every week.

Zelenskyy said, "Oil prices are still high enough for him to ignore the world." Ukrainian President said his intelligence services "have clear intel that this summer Russia plans to send troops to Belarus under the pretext of training exercises," adding that might be the beginning of operations against neighbouring European nations.

NATO's military committee chair, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, said the alliance was unable to confirm Zelenskyy's warning about Belarus. He said, "I believe that Western intelligence agencies are perfectly active in this, so I would expect confirmations."

In his speech, Zelenskyy called Russian President Vladimir Putin a "pathological liar" and added that he cannot offer real security guarantees. He said that Ukraine would "never accept deals made behind our backs without our involvement."

He said, "Putin cannot offer real security guarantees. Not just because he is a pathological liar but because Russia, in its current state, needs war to hold power together. And the world must be protected from that," according to a Politico report.

Zelenskyy insisted Ukraine has a future in the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance (NATO). His remarks came despite statements from US President Donald Trump and US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth that NATO membership for Ukraine is off the table in any final peace deal.

Ukrainian President said, "I also will not take NATO membership for Ukraine off the table." He further said, "But right now, the most influential member of NATO seems to be Putin because his whims have the power to block NATO decisions."

Zelenskyy said that a Russian drone hit the sarcophagus of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor carrying at least 15 kilograms of explosives just hours before the Munich Security Conference (MSC) started. He said, "This is not just madness, this is Russia's stance," Zelenskyy said. "A country that launches such attacks does not want peace."

Video Emerges After Man Who Saved Rishabh Pant Took Poison With Girlfriend

Days after Rajat Kumar, the man who once saved cricketer Rishabh Pant's life, and his girlfriend attempted suicide together, a disturbing video has emerged of the couple before they consumed poison.

"If we can't live together, we can at least die together," these were the words said by Rajat, 25, and his 21-year-old girlfriend, Manu Kashyap, in the video recorded before they ingested poison in a sugarcane field in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar on February 9. While Ms Kashyap died during treatment, Mr Kumar remains in critical condition, battling for his life in a hospital.

Their families had arranged their marriages elsewhere, refusing to accept their relationship due to caste differences. This rejection allegedly drove them to suicide. Following Ms Kashyap's death, her mother has alleged that Mr Kumar kidnapped her daughter and poisoned her.

Mr Kumar gained nationwide attention in December 2022 when he, along with his friend Nishu Kumar, rescued cricketer Rishabh Pant from a horrific car accident.

Mr Pant, who was travelling from Delhi to Uttarakhand, lost control of his Mercedes, which crashed into a divider and caught fire near Roorkee. Rajat and Nishu, working at a nearby factory, saw the accident and rushed to the scene. Without knowing who he was, they pulled the injured cricketer from the burning wreckage and arranged for medical help.

Mr Pant later acknowledged them as "heroes." As a token of gratitude, he gifted the two men scooters for their bravery.

Elon Musk's DOGE Barred From Treasury, Access To Health Allowed

A federal judge extended a block on Elon Musk's government cost-cutting team from accessing payment systems at the US Treasury Department on Friday, while another judge allowed the billionaire's DOGE staffers to access records at health, labor and consumer financial protection agencies.

Musk's so-called Department of Government Efficiency has swept through federal agencies since Republican Donald Trump became president last month and put the chief executive of carmaker Tesla in charge of rooting out wasteful spending as part of Trump's dramatic overhaul of government, which included thousands of job cuts on Friday.

In Manhattan, US District Judge Jeannette Vargas extended a temporary block on DOGE that was put in place on Saturday, which prevented Musk's team from accessing Treasury systems responsible for trillions of dollars of payments.

The judge said at a court hearing she would not yet rule on a request from 19 Democratic state attorneys general for a longer-lasting preliminary injunction on DOGE's access to the systems.

The case by the attorneys general is one of at least 20 related to efforts to slash the size of the government. Around 70 lawsuits have been filed challenging Trump initiatives, from ending birthright citizenship to limiting federal funding for transgender health treatments, and many policies have been blocked by courts.

The attorneys general alleged that Musk's team has no legal power to access the payment systems that contain sensitive personal information on millions of Americans and that Musk and his team could disrupt funding for health clinics, preschools and other programs.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Musk and other Trump allies have called for judges to be impeached in response to rulings against his DOGE team, although the president said he would obey court orders.

A federal judge in Washington declined a request by unions and nonprofits to temporarily block Musk's team from accessing records at the departments of Labor and of Health and Human Services, as well as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

US District Judge John Bates said in a written opinion it was likely that government was correct that DOGE was an agency, allowing it to detail its staff to other government departments. However, Bates called his finding a "close question," noting that the government did not want DOGE to be considered an agency for purposes of another federal law, which would subject it to open records requests.

Bates, who was appointed by Republican President George W. Bush, said DOGE was a "Goldilocks entity: not an agency when it is burdensome but an agency when it is convenient."

Bates asked the parties to propose a schedule for determining if he should issue a longer-term preliminary injunction blocking DOGE from the agencies.

Musk reposted a message on his X social media platform praising the ruling. "This is a HUGE win!" the original message said.

At two other court hearings on Friday, judges declined to rule immediately on requests to block or extend orders barring the DOGE team access to government systems.

U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss considered a request by the University of California Student Association to extend a temporary block on DOGE from accessing systems at the Department of Education, which the students said would violate privacy and administrative procedure laws.

The judge, appointed by Democratic President Barack Obama, said he would issue a decision by Monday.

The Trump administration has said that access is crucial to allow DOGE to reduce waste, fraud and abuse in student loan programs at a department that the president and Musk say should be eliminated.

"What does that mean, fraud, waste and abuse?" Moss asked a Justice Department attorney at the hearing. "I expect if you ask Elon Musk, he would say the entire Department of Education is waste."

A group of Democratic attorneys general sued Musk, Trump and DOGE on Thursday, alleging Musk's appointment was unconstitutional and asking a federal judge to bar him from accessing and using government data, cancelling contracts or making personnel decisions.

At a hearing in that case on Friday, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington was skeptical of the states' request and did not say when she would rule.

Courts have blocked most of the Trump initiatives that have been legally challenged. Most of the cost-cutting campaign appears to be focused on programs opposed by political conservatives.

At 'World's Clearest Lake', You Absolutely Cannot Do This

Tourists visiting Nelson Lakes National Park in New Zealand are now required to clean their shoes before entering Lake Rotomairewhenua, also known as Blue Lake. First discovered by the Maori iwi, Ngati Apa tribe, the waterbody is currently at risk of being polluted by invasive microscopic algae spread.

While the alga is already downstream of the lake, it is being carried up the route on hikers' boots or in their water bottles, reported CNN.

As a result, Ngati Apa ki te Ra To Trust, Te Araroa Trust, and the Department of Conservation have collaborated to implement biosecurity precautions along the path. With instructional signs asking hikers to clean their shoes and equipment before continuing towards Rotomairewhenua, they have set up cleaning stations next to the lakes, where the algae are present.

Most importantly, they are warning tourists not to touch the water by any means, including swimming, soaking a towel to cool off, or submerging a GoPro to capture an underwater image. This is done not only due to the biosecurity concern but also out of respect for the lake. It is considered to be a sacred waterbody in the local Maori culture.

During the summer, a warden, usually from the Department of Conservation or a Ngati Apa representative, is positioned at the lake to keep an eye on hikers and explain to them the biosecurity hazards, the water's cultural value and possible human impacts.

As of right now, there are signs that people are following the instructions and there are fewer instances of tourists carelessly immersing a towel or themselves in the lake after a sweaty climb. While many visitors follow these guidelines, surveys indicate that some visitors remain complacent, assuming the risk is posed by others rather than themselves.

Restricting the number of visitors is not thought to be the best solution to the problem. Instead, conservationists promote responsible tourism, encouraging tourists to enjoy Rotomairewhenua without endangering its delicate ecosystem.

Fed Up With Abusive Husband, She Married Loan Shark Who Visited Their Home

A woman in Bihar left her abusive husband to marry a loan recovery agent who used to visit her home for repayment. Indra Kumari was married in 2022 to Nakul Sharma, a resident of Jamui district. Nakul, an alcoholic, allegedly used to abuse Indra. Unable to bear the physical and emotional abuse, she sought an escape.

During this time, she crossed paths with Pawan Kumar Yadav, a loan shark working for a finance company. Their relationship started as a professional interaction when Pawan visited her home to collect a loan repayment. Over time, their acquaintance developed into friendship, which eventually turned into love.

For five months, Indra and Pawan carried on their relationship in secret. On February 4, they took flight and reached West Bengal's Asansol, where Indra's aunt resides. They remained there for a few days before returning to Jamui. On February 11, they got married at a temple. Their wedding, performed with traditional Hindu rituals, was attended by several people. Soon after, a video of the ceremony surfaced online and quickly went viral.

While Pawan's family has accepted the marriage, Indra's family is opposed to it and has filed an FIR against him. Indra said that she married Pawan out of her own free will.

With the FIR filed against Pawan and threats from Indra's family, the newlyweds have sought protection from the authorities. They fear retaliation from Indra's relatives and societal backlash.

Amid Ranveer Allahbadia Row, Javed Akhtar On 'Slang In Comedy' Goes Viral

Amid the backlash over podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia's crass remarks at a roast show, a video of poet-lyricist Javed Akhtar sharing his perspective on whether slang is acceptable in comedy has gone viral. Mr Akhtar, known as much for his wit as for his poetry, sat down for a chat with comics Sapan Verma, Biswa Kalyan Rath and Shreeja Charturvedi last year in an episode of Chill Sesh.

During the interaction, Mr Rath asked him about his views on stand-up comedians using slang. "When we do comedy, we use slang and people laugh. Gradually, it becomes a habit. We don't feel bad about it even though others may. So what is your perspective? Is slang acceptable in the context of comedy?" Mr Rath asked.

In response, Mr Akhtar started with his signature storytelling. "I will tell you something. Odisha, Bihar and Mexico, anywhere in the world where there is poverty, people eat lots of chilli because the food is bland. So just to get some taste, they eat chilli. Gaali is the chilli of language. If you can speak good language and if you are witty enough, you don't need this chilli. If the conversation is bland, you will put some gaalis in it," he said, drawing a round of applause.

Comic Sapan Verma said Mr Akhtar had poetically insulted stand-up comedians. "We are feeling bad, but also feeling good."

Ms Chaturvedi asked if he felt the same about songs with double-meaning lyrics. "Is it not a release for some people to talk about these things or is it just bad?"

Mr Akhtar replied, "What kind of people they must be? they need a psychiatrist, not a song. Who gets relief if they listen to a vulgar song? The idea is frightening."

Allahbadia, also known as the BeerBiceps Guy, recently appeared in an episode of India's Got Latent hosted by Raina. A short clip from the show, which is now viral, shows Allahbadia asking a contestant, "Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once and stop it forever?"

The remark has sparked a massive row and put the spotlight on mature content in comedy shows that make it to streaming platforms and are available to all age groups, including children. Many have said such content can impact children negatively. They have also flagged racist remarks in the garb of comedy that may create social tensions. Demands have been raised to regulate such content.

Allahbadia also faces a police case for his remarks. A Parliamentary committee, too, has taken note and may summon him. The podcaster has issued an apology in which he has said comedy was not his forte and that his remark was the result of a lapse in judgment.

"Absolutely Mindless": Rohit, Gambhir's Strategy Blasted By Ex India Star

Team India completed a successful run-chase of 305 runs against England in the second ODI at Cuttack on Sunday, with skipper Rohit Sharma leading the charge with the bat. Though it turned out to be another comfortable victory for India, some of the Gautam Gambhir-led team management's decisions continue to baffle experts. Former India cricketer Dodda Ganesh didn't mince words on social media as he asked some critical questions.

Strangely, all-rounder Axar Patel was sent ahead of wicket-keeper batter KL Rahul, not for the first time in this series. Rahul, who is a top-order batter by trait, has often seen his batting position being shuffled on the basis of the team's needs. He isn't a traditional wicketkeeper as well, but has been deployed in that position to help the team strike a better balance.

While not many objected to picking Rahul as India's wicket-keeper over Rishabh Pant, who continues to warm the bench, former Ganesh did object to Rahul's batting position. The keeper-batter came out to play at the No. 6 spot in the order, behind Axar, who is considered to be a 'bowling all-rounder'.

"Axar Patel again ahead of KL Rahul? I'm speechless. Does it make any sense to push a genuine batter like Rahul to no 6? When you're 5/3, do you've the courage to send Axar on a tricky pitch? If not, what sense does this experiment make? Absolutely mindless this," Ganesh wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The only reason experts have been able to perceive behind this change in the batting order for Rahul is head coach Gautam Gambhir preferring as many left-hand right-hand combinations in the middle.

As for the match, Rohit soared back to form with his 32nd ODI hundred. His knock laid the foundation of India's series-winning performance, as the hosts went 2-0 up against England, with one game to spare.

"...when people have played for a number of years and scored so many runs over the years...that means something," Rohit said in a video shared by BCCI.

"I've played this game for a long time now and I understand what is required of me. So, it's just about going out there and doing your things and this was, what I did today was, one of my things." '

"In my mind, it was just about doing things that I do, try and bat the way I do. I've been here long enough... one or two knocks is not going to change my mind and the way I bat. But (it was) just another day in the office," the 37-year-old added.

Old Video Of African Leader Chanting 'Kill White Farmers' Viral, Musk Reacts

Billionaire Elon Musk has criticised South African political leader Julius Malema after a two-year-old video in which he's chanting "Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer" at a rally attended by thousands of supporters resurfaced on social media. The Tesla CEO, who was born in South Africa's capital Pretoria, shared the clip on X, saying, "He is chanting 'kill the white farmers' to a cheering stadium."

The chant, historically linked to Peter Mokaba, a former African National Congress (ANC) youth leader, is rooted in the anti-apartheid struggle of the 1990s. Mr Mokaba, who died in 2002, argued that it was a metaphor rather than a literal call to violence. In 2022, South Africa's Equality Court ruled that the slogan did not constitute hate speech under the country's legal framework.

Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has a history of making radical statements. His party, founded after his expulsion from the ANC, is now South Africa's third-largest and advocates for land nationalisation and wealth redistribution. These policies have gained support among many township residents who feel economically excluded even after apartheid ended. The EFF secured 11 per cent of the vote in the last national elections.

Mr Malema made the controversial chant during the EFF's 10th anniversary rally in July 2023, where he told supporters, "We are taking government in 2024. The revolution in South Africa is guaranteed."

Musk condemned the chant then as well, warning that "They are openly pushing for the genocide of White people in South Africa." He also questioned why South African President Cyril Ramaphosa had not addressed the controversy.

In response, Mr Malema defended the chant at a press conference, arguing it was part of South Africa's political history and not an incitement to violence. He also launched an attack on Musk, saying the billionaire "looks like an illiterate" and that "the only thing that protects him is his white skin."

This comes amid fresh tensions between South Africa and the US after President Donald Trump announced that America would cut all future aid to the African nation over its land expropriation policies. This led to South African rand dropping nearly 2 per cent against the dollar.

Trump's comments followed President Ramaphosa's signing of a new law that makes it easier for the state to expropriate land with equitable compensation. The ANC has long pushed for land reforms to address racial disparities in ownership.

This was not the first time Trump threatened economic action against South Africa. In December, he warned of 100 per cent tariffs on BRICS nations if they moved away from using the US dollar.

Scientists Deplore Sharp US Cut In Medical Research Funding

The US agency overseeing medical research has announced a major cut in funding to universities and research centers, a move strongly condemned by scientists and academics who say work on cancer and other diseases will suffer.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) said late Friday it was setting a 15 percent limit on its funding of "indirect," or overhead, costs linked to research.

That represents a dramatic drop, amounting to billions of dollars, from the indirect billings of up to 60 percent now charged by some organizations, the agency said.

"This change will save more than $4B a year effective immediately," the official NIH account said on X.

It said it was "vital to ensure that as many funds as possible go toward direct scientific research costs."

The expenses being targeted include maintenance, equipment and administrative costs at research laboratories.

The cut could affect research on diseases like cancer and neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, scientists said.

"This is a surefire way to cripple lifesaving research and innovation," Matt Owens, president of COGR, which represents research institutes and university medical centers, said in a statement to AFP.

"America's competitors will relish this self-inflicted wound," he said. "We urge NIH leaders to rescind this dangerous policy before its harms are felt by Americans."

Jeffrey Flier, former dean of the Harvard University medical faculty, said on X that the approach by President Donald Trump's administration "was designed not to improve the process, but to harm institutions, researchers and biomed research."

He said it would "cause chaos and harm biomedical research and researchers."

The White House on Saturday defended the move, saying it was bringing its indirect cost rates in line with metrics used by private sector foundations.

"NIH announced a new indirect costs policy that is in line with what research institutions receive from private foundations," said a statement.

"The indirect cost rate is intended to cover overhead and the federal government has been paying an exorbitantly high rate."

Institutions potentially affected by the cuts said the indirect costs pay for "essential" tools that enable research.

"The targeted funds pay for the essential tools, facilities, and support personnel that make research possible, sustaining laboratories to house experiments, electricity to keep centrifuges spinning, and computers to protect clinical data behind life-saving medical treatments," said a spokesperson for Johns Hopkins University.

Scientists have expressed concern in recent weeks at the lack of transparency as the new administration removes reams of epidemiological data from health-related government websites.

The NIH announcement was saluted by Elon Musk, the billionaire Trump advisor leading an effort to drastically trim federal spending.

Some Republican lawmakers also welcomed the measure, which is likely to have its greatest impact on prestigious research universities like Harvard, Yale and Johns Hopkins.
