Gujarat Man Beaten, Driven Around Tied To Car For Stealing, Cops File Case

A shocking video showing a youth being beaten up and then tied to the bonnet of a car and being driven around in Godhra's Kanku Thambhala area prompted police action after the clip went viral on social media.

The incident has led to the registration of cases against both the accused who carried out the assault and the youth who was tied to the car.

The video, which was circulated widely online, shows the young man tied to the bonnet of a car and being driven around after allegedly being caught attempting to steal pesticides and food from a local shop.

Enraged by the attempted theft, the shopkeeper, along with his associates, reportedly beat the youth before tying him to the car's bonnet.

Bystanders filmed the incident, and one of the videos eventually reached the police.

Godhra Taluka Police have taken cognisance of the matter, and cases have been registered against all parties involved.

Deputy Superintendent of Police NV Patel confirmed the incident, stating, "This incident happened on August 29 when a youth tried to steal things from a shopping centre in the Kanku Thambhala area. A video of the youth being beaten, tied to a car's bonnet and being driven around went viral on social media. On the basis of that video, police have registered a case against the youth who tried committing the theft and those who tied him to the bonnet and beat him."

The police investigation into the incident is currently underway, and further actions will be determined based on the findings.

This incident has sparked debate over vigilantism and the appropriate handling of petty crimes in society as more and more incidents emerge in different parts of the nation where people have resorted to taking the law into their own hands and resorting to cruel tactics instead of handing criminals over to the police.

US Teen, Who Just Graduated, Paralysed Due To Rare West Nile Infection

An 18-year-old Missouri teen has been fighting for his life in a hospital for two weeks after contracting the West Nile virus. John Procter VI's nightmare began when he experienced what seemed to be routine symptoms such as headache and dizziness on August 8, but rapidly worsened, leaving him paralysed and on a ventilator in the ICU, reported Fox News.

Initially, when he visited urgent care, he was diagnosed with a tension headache and sent home with over-the-counter medication. Soon, his condition worsened, leading to violent vomiting and a high fever that had him in and out of the hospital.

"They thought he had meningitis, so they did some tests for that," his father, John Procter V, shared with a local news station. "It came back negative."

The following day, he had stroke-like symptoms and pneumonia, his father recalled. "Unable to move, and his speech was real slurred," he said.

Rushed back to the hospital, the 18-year-old was admitted to the ICU and placed on a ventilator. Despite being treated at four different hospitals, it took over 20 doctors more than two weeks to identify the cause of his rapid decline - West Nile virus, a mosquito-borne illness.

The virus has taken a devastating toll on Mr Procter's body. According to his father, the teenager has restricted mobility, particularly on his left side. He requires assistance to support his weight and head.

Despite the grim situation, there have been some "small but vast" improvements, his father said. Mr Procter has undergone a tracheostomy to help with breathing and has begun physical therapy.

John Procter VI, who dreamt of becoming a diesel mechanic, now faces a long and challenging recovery. "Doctors say this will be a marathon to try and get him back to what he was before this virus almost killed him," his father wrote on a GoFundMe page set up to help cover the mounting medical expenses.

Most people infected with West Nile virus don't show symptoms, but rare cases can be severe, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). About 1 in 150 people will develop serious illnesses like meningitis or encephalitis, which can cause fever, headache, paralysis and even coma. Recovery from a severe case can take weeks or months.

Fake X Accounts Push For Pro-Trump Content Using Stolen Pics Of Influencers

Meet "Eva," "Sophia," and "Samantha" -- fake accounts which pose as chic American women who support Donald Trump on the platform X, disguising themselves by using stolen photographs of European fashion and beauty influencers, according to a study published Wednesday.

The report by the nonprofit Center for Information Resilience (CIR) comes as researchers express alarm ahead of the US election in November that the site owned by Elon Musk -- who has endorsed Trump -- is plagued with fake accounts and political disinformation.

CIR said it uncovered 16 accounts that used images of European influencers -- without their permission -- to pose as young women promoting Trump and encouraging thousands of followers to vote for the Republican nominee.

These accounts, which use stolen images of real people to appear authentic, were among 56 profiles that appear to be part of a coordinated campaign to push pro-Trump content, it added.

"By using images of the influencers, the accounts recognize the value of creating a believable human persona, steering clear of the generic photos and bot-like usernames usually associated with fake accounts," CIR's report said.

It was unclear who was behind the digital deception or whether the accounts were pushing pro-Trump content for ideological or monetary gain.

The fake profiles use everyday images from the influencers' Instagram accounts -- including pictures of them at the beach or walking their dog -- which are captioned with MAGA-related hashtags or pledges to vote for Trump, CIR said.

MAGA, or Make America Great Again, is a political slogan associated with Trump and his campaign.

Many of the accounts have attempted to spread misinformation about hot-button political subjects such as a recent assassination attempt against Trump, his Democratic rival Kamala Harris's ethnicity and US military aid to Ukraine, the report said.

Some accounts also promote anti-vaccine and COVID-19 conspiracies, with some posts viewed hundreds of thousands of times.

"They post about divisive issues in US politics in a bid to exploit pre-existing tensions," the report said.

One of the impersonators is "Luna," a self-described 32-year-old "MAGA Trump supporter," who used images of a German fashion influencer named Debbie Nederlof, according to CNN, which jointly conducted the investigation with CIR.

Nederlof, a single mother, voiced anger and frustration over the misuse of her images, saying she had "nothing to do with the United States, with Trump, the political things over there."

"What the hell do I -- from a small place in Germany -- care about US politics?" she said.

X did not respond to a request for comment.

Impersonation is a violation of the platform's rules, and accounts posing as another person, group or organization may be "permanently suspended," according to X's website.

Musk appears to exert an outsized influence on US voters through the platform and his own personal account, which is regularly flagged by fact-checkers for spreading political falsehoods to his nearly 196 million followers.

Since Musk's 2022 acquisition of X, the platform has gutted trust and safety teams and scaled back content moderation efforts once used to tame misinformation, making it what researchers call a haven for disinformation.

What Is Atlantic Nina, La Nina's Cousin That Could Affect Hurricane Season

The North Atlantic Ocean has been running a fever for months, with surface temperatures at or near record highs. But cooling along the equator in both the Atlantic and eastern Pacific may finally be starting to bring some relief, particularly for vulnerable coral reef ecosystems.

This cooling comes from two climate phenomena with similar names: La Nina, which forms in the tropical Pacific, and the less well-known Atlantic Nina.

Both can affect the Atlantic hurricane season. While La Nina tends to bring conditions ideal for Atlantic hurricanes, the less powerful Atlantic Nina has the potential to reduce some of the hurricane risk.

A map shows a cool spot along the equator while temperatures just to the north are well above average.
Cooling in the tropical Atlantic along the equator is a sign an Atlantic Nina may be forming.

We're ocean and atmospheric scientists who study this type of climate phenomenon. It's rare to see both Ninas at the same time, yet in August 2024, both appeared to be developing. Let's take a closer look at what that means.

La Nina and its cousin, Atlantic Nina

La Nina is part of the El Nino–Southern Oscillation, a well-known climate phenomenon that has widespread effects on climate and weather around the world.

During La Nina, sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific dip below normal. Easterly trade winds then strengthen, allowing more cool water to well up along the equator off South America. That cooling affects the atmosphere in ways that reverberate across the planet. Some areas become stormier and others drier during La Nina, and the wind shear that can tear apart Atlantic hurricanes tends to weaken.

La Nina and its warmer opposite, El Nino, oscillate every three to four years or so.

La Nina and its opposite, El Niño, explained. NOAA.

A similar climate phenomenon, Atlantic Nina, occurs in the Atlantic Ocean but at a much smaller scale and amplitude. It typically peaks around July or August and tends to have a shorter duration than its Pacific cousin and much more modest and local impacts. Atlantic Ninas generally have the opposite effect of Atlantic Ninos, which tend to reduce rainfall over Africa's Sahel region and increase rainfall in Brazil and the countries that surround the Gulf of Guinea, such as Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon.

While much weaker than their Pacific counterpart, Atlantic Ninas can, however, partially counteract La Ninas by weakening summer winds that help drive the upwelling that cools the eastern Pacific.

Why are both happening now?

In July and August 2024, meteorologists noted cooling that appeared to be the development of an Atlantic Nina along the equator. The winds at the ocean surface had been weak through most of the summer, and sea surface temperatures there were quite warm until early June, so signs of an Atlantic Nina emerging were a surprise.

At the same time, waters along the equator in the eastern Pacific were also cooling, with La Nina conditions expected there by October or November.

A map of sea surface temperature anomalies shows cooling along the tropical Atlantic and eastern Pacific regions, but much warmer than average temperatures in the Caribbean.

Getting a Pacific-Atlantic Nina combination is rare but not impossible. It's like finding two different pendulums that are weakly coupled to swing in opposite directions moving together in time. The combinations of La Nina and Atlantic Niño, or El Niño and Atlantic Nina are more common.

Good news or bad for hurricane season?

An Atlantic Nina may initially suggest good news for those living in hurricane-prone areas.

Cooler than average waters off the coast of Africa can suppress the formation of African easterly waves. These are clusters of thunderstorm activity that can form into tropical disturbances and eventually tropical storms or hurricanes.

Tropical storms draw energy from the process of evaporating water associated with warm sea surface temperatures. So, cooling in the tropical Atlantic could weaken this process. That would leave less energy for the thunderstorms, which would reduce the probability of a tropical cyclone forming.

However, NOAA takes all factors into account when it updates its Atlantic hurricane season outlook, released in early August, and it still anticipates an extremely active 2024 season. Tropical storm season typically peaks in early to mid-September.

Two reasons are behind the busy forecast: The near record-breaking warm sea surface temperatures in much of the North Atlantic can strengthen hurricanes. And the expected development of a La Nina in the Pacific tends to weaken wind shear – the change in wind speed with height that can tear apart hurricanes. La Nina's much stronger effects can override any impacts associated with the Atlantic Nina.

Exacerbating the problem: Global warming

The past two years have seen exceptionally high ocean temperatures in the Atlantic and around much of the world's oceans. The two Ninas are likely to contribute some cooling relief for certain regions, but it may not last long.

In addition to these cycles, the global warming trend caused by rising greenhouse gas emissions is raising the baseline temperatures and can fuel major hurricanes. The Conversation

The Vishwamitri river that flows through Vadodara has been overflowing leading to residential areas experiencing severe waterlogging. People were seen wading through knee-deep waters and the waterlogging led to traffic snarls.

Due to the heavy rainfall, water from Ajwa Reservoir and Pratappura Reservoir was released into Vishwamitri River, leading to waterlogging on Tuesday.

A resident said that severe waterlogging had been experienced since Monday evening.

"Water has entered houses since Monday evening in low-lying areas. People are shifting to other safe locations. There is a shortage of food. People are facing a lot of difficulty," he told news agency ANI.

Resident said that they had never seen a flood-like situation like this in the past.

The Kashi Vishwanath Mahadev Temple complex in Vadodara was submerged due to heavy rainfall and the temple premises were shut on Tuesday. People said that they had never seen this much rain in the last 30 years.

In Gandhinagar number plates of vehicles were found scattered at Mahatma Mandir Underbridge, Sector-13 after the water receded. The area faced severe waterlogging due to incessant rain.

"Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has held a meeting today with all the district officials through videoconference and directed us regarding human life. He directed us that people shouldn't face electricity shortages, medicinal shortages and other needful things. In the coming 2-3 days, rain is expected as forecasted by the IMD, leaves of all the district collectors and concerned officials have been cancelled and they are expected to join the relief and rescue work," Gujarat Relief Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey said.

"Water should also be arranged wherever there is a power cut. 1,653 people were rescued and 17800 people were shifted. There have been 99 deaths during the entire monsoon. 3 deaths have occurred in 24 hours, 1 in Dahod and 2 in Gandhinagar district," he added.

"Mountain-Like Challenges": Muhammad Yunus Asks Bangladesh For "Patience"

Bangladesh interim government's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Sunday appealed to the people to have "patience" as it is difficult to address the "mountain-like challenges" overnight while promising them a free, fair and participatory election after implementing key reforms in different sectors.

In a televised address to the nation, his second since assuming charge on August 8 after the fall of the government led by Sheikh Hasina on August 5, Yunus urged the people to refrain from storming institutions, putting pressure to accept cases and the tendency to do some kind of trial in advance by attacking people while taking them to the courts.

"I'll just say, you have to be patient. It is difficult to overcome mountain-like challenges overnight," he said, referring to the demands coming from various sections to punish those responsible for the deaths of many people during the recent anti-government protests.

These incidents will fade the glory of the successful struggle to build a new Bangladesh, the 84-year-old Nobel laureate, said.

"We will maintain friendly relations with all countries," he said.Mutual trust and cooperation will be the base of our foreign policy. We are respectful of all international laws, including human rights. We have taken steps to become signatory to the international convention on enforced disappearances," he was quoted as saying by the official BSS news agency.

Yunus said the timing of the election is a political decision and people will decide how long this interim government will remain in power.

He assured the nation that his interim government will hold free, fair and inclusive elections in the country after undertaking reforms in various sectors.

"After completion of required reforms in administration, judiciary, election commission and electoral system, law and order and information flow systems -- a free, fair and inclusive election will be held to give the student-people mass protests a successful consequence," Yunus said.

A committee, he said, has already been formed to prepare a white paper on corruption, money laundering, anti-people agreements and looting that took place in the last 15 years.

Yunus, who now serves as the Chief Adviser - a position equivalent to the prime minister, said his interim government would strengthen the local government institutions and ensure decentralisation to consolidate democracy.

"The goal will be to introduce an accountable political system,” Yunus, who assumed charge following the ouster of Prime Minister Hasina amid a massive students' movement that also forced her to flee to India.     Yunus did not give any deadline for the tenure of his interim government but acknowledged that “everyone is interested to know when our government will leave”.

“The answer lies with you when you will give us the farewell. None of us (council of advisers) are the ones to rule the country. We are happy with our professions. We took charge, responding to the students' call during a national crisis,” he said.

Yunus said that his government would “put in all our efforts” to discharge the duty he has been entrusted with as all sections of people had welcomed his government.

The chief adviser slammed Hasina's "fascist autocratic regime”, saying they destroyed every institution of the country, crippled the economy and education system, and gauged people's voices through intimidation and torture.

Yunus said his government believed in “national unity" and for that reason, he has appointed a special assistant with the status of an adviser with the responsibility of developing national solidarity.

Yunus said the main aim of the election is to introduce an accountable political system against corruption, looting and mass killing.

Local government institutions, he said, must be strengthened and decentralisation of power should be ensured to consolidate democracy.

Claiming that the government has taken a strong stance against corruption, the Chief Adviser said all the advisers to the interim government will disclose their wealth statements within the quickest possible time.

Who Was Fuad Shukr, Hezbollah Commander Whose Death Sparked Today's Conflict

Lebanon- based militant group Hezbollah fired a large number of missiles at Israel on Sunday, retaliating for the assassination of their senior commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut last month.

Hezbollah and Israel have been exchanging fire since October 7, while avoiding a major escalation. While both sides had avoided a major escalation, tensions rose significantly after a missile strike in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights killed 12 people. While Hezbollah denied involvement in that attack, Israel responded with targeted airstrikes, assassinating Fuad Shukr and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

On Sunday, the Iranian-backed movement said the attack was a response to Israel's actions and announced that they had completed the "first phase" of its retaliation against the Jewish State, reported Reuters.

Who was Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr?

Fuad Shukr, also known by the alias "Al-Hajj Mohsin", was a senior commander in Hezbollah, a militant group based in Lebanon, widely regarded as a terrorist organisation by several countries, including the United States and Israel. Shukr was among the founding members of Hezbollah during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982. He was part of the generation of Lebanese Shi'ites who aligned with Iran's Revolutionary Guards to establish the group.

He was a close associate of Imad Mughniyeh, Hezbollah's former military commander who was assassinated in Damascus in 2008. Shukr's prominence in the group grew after Mughniyeh's death.

The US accused Shukr of playing a central role in the 1983 bombing of the US Marine barracks in Beirut, which killed 241 US military personnel. This attack is one of the deadliest against American forces in the Middle East. The US government had placed a bounty of up to $5 million on Shukr's head through its Rewards for Justice program.

Fuad Shukr served as a senior military commander in Hezbollah's forces in southern Lebanon and was a member of the group's highest military body, the Jihad Council. He played a key role in Hezbollah's military operations in Syria, particularly in supporting President Bashar al-Assad during the Syrian civil war. Hezbollah's involvement in Syria was crucial to Assad's survival during the conflict's early years.

Fuad Shukr was also a special adviser to Hezbollah's leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and was a member of the Shura Council, a key decision-making body within the organisation.

On July 30, Fuad Shukr was targeted by an Israeli airstrike in Beirut. Following the airstrike, Lebanese security sources reported that Shukr was critically injured. His death was later confirmed by Israeli broadcast reports.

Oleksandr Budko Lost Legs In War, He's Now Ukraine's Most Desirable Bachelor

Oleksandr Budko, the 26-year-old Ukrainian soldier who lost both legs during Russia's invasion of Ukraine, has been roped in as the face of the Ukrainian version of the US reality television show The Bachelor. Mr Budko, who was guarding the north-eastern Kharkiv region, lost his legs in August 2022.

Speaking to Variety, Oleksandr Budko said that he is hopeful of finding love on the show.

“I am not looking for an ideal. I'm looking for someone whose inner world I can admire. I want her to be a person with great respect for veterans who cares about barrier-free and inclusive spaces. For me, ‘The Bachelor' is a chance to meet someone I want to try and start a family with. I know from my own experience that miracles can be found anywhere, and I believe one can find love on the show,” he said.

Talking about the script and the dating format of The Bachelors, Oleksandr Bohutskyi, CEO of Starlight Media, said: “We thank Warner Bros. International Television for this undoubtedly important partnership and their willingness to see new power and senses in the world's iconic format in the extraordinary circumstances of the Russian-Ukrainian war. We believe that love and life will win. This fall, on STB, we will be cheering for the love story of our modern-day hero and shaping the culture of new relationships.”

As per BBC, Oleksandr Budko and his girlfriend parted ways in January. Not just love, but Mr Budko also aims to raise awareness of the challenges disabled Ukrainians face with his participation.

Recalling the deadly accident, Mr Budko told BBC, "I felt the earth shift onto me. I felt a terrible pain in my legs and realised that it would mean the amputation of my legs. I screamed from horrific pain and shouted for people to hear me. I understood that I had lost my legs at the moment of injury, two or three seconds after I felt the pain.”

Donald Trump Scrambles For Media Spotlight As Kamala Harris Leads

Donald Trump, touting plans on taxes and health, tried on Friday to turn the page on a week in which he was overshadowed by Kamala Harris and struggled to focus on policy issues instead of personal attacks on his opponent in the US presidential race.

From a lectern at a Mexican restaurant in Las Vegas, the Republican candidate spoke about his plan to eliminate taxes on tips to waiters and other service employees. He discussed his campaign's efforts to court Hispanic voters in Nevada, a battleground state that could help determine the November 5 election, and nationwide.

The tax proposal, a pillar of Trump's economic agenda, is the kind of issue his advisers have been pressing him to focus on, rather than his frequent personal attacks against Vice President Harris' looks, Black and Indian heritage and intelligence, warning they could turn off the moderate voters he needs to win.

At an event in Arizona later, the former president repeated his tax pledge, while promising to set up a commission to investigate presidential assassination attempts. He also said he would install a panel to investigate "an increase in chronic health problems and childhood diseases."

Both proposals are apparent concessions to independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who endorsed Trump at the event after dropping out of the race.

Trump's comments come one day after Harris accepted the Democratic Party's presidential nomination with a muscular speech that laid down broad foreign policy principles and sharp contrasts with Trump with 11 weeks left until Election Day.

Trump sought to counter-program the four-day convention with events of his own around the country, hoping to steal some media attention from Harris. However, his speeches on foreign policy, the economy and crime did little to dislodge the spotlight from Harris and received little attention - a stunning turnabout for a politician used to dominating headlines.

The Republican and his aides hope Thursday's boisterous convention finale marks the end of the honeymoon period for Harris, who emerged as the Democratic candidate little more than a month ago, after President Joe Biden exited the race and endorsed her.

During Harris' acceptance speech in Chicago, Trump attacked her with dozens of posts on his Truth Social platform, calling her a liar, a Marxist and "Comrade Kamala Harris." One post simply asked: "IS SHE TALKING ABOUT ME?"

William Rosenberg, a political science professor at Drexel University, said Trump's personal attacks on Harris underscored his frustration with having to face a biracial woman, a task complicated by his history of making racist remarks.

"His anger and his words speak volumes," Rosenberg said. "He's navigating a path which is full of problems for him."

Harris has surged in the polls since entering the race, with polling aggregator website FiveThirtyEight putting her ahead of Trump in six of seven battleground states.

She is also outraising her Republican counterpart. Her campaign told the Federal Election Commission this week that it raised $204 million last month, compared to $48 million reported to the body by Trump's main fundraising group.

One question still to be answered is whether Harris will also outpace Trump on the trail in the coming weeks. Biden, 81, made relatively few campaign stops, easing pressure on Trump to travel more around the country. That may now change with Harris, 59.

Trump, 78, will travel to Detroit on Monday to address a conference of the National Guard Association of the United States and is scheduled to give a speech at a conservative women's group's annual summit in Washington on Friday.

Campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said Trump would hold at least one additional campaign stop between those two events, without providing details.

The Harris campaign has not yet released details of her movements for next week.

Leavitt blamed the media for focusing their stories on Trump's personal attacks, which she said made up a fraction of his otherwise policy-heavy rallies and speeches.

At a speech event on Wednesday in Asheboro, North Carolina, billed as one on national security, Trump said he had rejected the recommendations of his advisers to focus on policy, and he insulted Harris and other Democrats in personal terms.

He again recounted those conversations with advisers at the rally in Arizona on Friday.

"My geniuses, they get paid a fortune - actually not that much - but I call up my people, I say, 'They're knocking the hell out of me, and you say I shouldn't get personal. I have to get personal, don't I?'" Trump said to applause.

An outside adviser to Trump told Reuters on condition of anonymity that several advisers had told the former president that a continued focus on insults rather than policy could doom his chances in November.

Republican strategist Doug Heye said Trump could still win the race, which he predicted would be close, but to do that he should focus on inflation, illegal immigration and other issues that polling shows many voters give him higher marks on.

Instagram, TikTok Stars Get VIP Treatment At Kamala Harris' Democrat Event

The Kamala Harris campaign rolled out the blue carpet for social media influencers at the Democratic National Convention this week, hoping that they can help get out the vote to beat Donald Trump.

Stars of Instagram and TikTok were feted with free drinks, yacht parties and full VIP access, among other special treatment that was not given to the traditional press at the political convention -- which felt more like a festival, at times -- in Chicago.

"People have to realize that a lot of these creators have larger audiences than CNN, The New York Times, Univision, Telemundo, ABC," said Benjamin Zamora, a former journalist who left the news media to work as an influencer online, where he has 6.3 million followers across platforms.

He spoke on the floor of Chicago's United Center, where rooms have been set aside to pamper influencers with spreads of wine and prime-rib sandwiches.

It was a far cry from what was available for the mainstream press, but for Zamora, the difference in treatment makes sense.

"The Democratic National Convention sees content creators as allies; that's not the case for the press," he said.

The accreditation of more than 200 influencers is a new development at this convention, part of a strategy to broaden Harris's electoral base.

The treatment given to influencers contrasts with the fact that Harris has not given an interview or press conference to the mainstream press since President Joe Biden stepped aside and the party endorsed her nomination.

At least five influencers made the convention's select list of speakers, including Uruguay's Carlos Eduardo Espina, who took the podium Wednesday.

"It's really incredible that they gave us that opportunity," he told AFP.

"We see Bill Clinton, Joe Biden, and we think 'Wow, we don't deserve to be in the same space as them,'" he added.

"But we do. We have a lot to offer," said the 25-year-old, who has more than 11 million followers on social networks.

In the arena, influencers -- with cameras, lights and microphones in hand -- are freer to roam than many press teams, and have a reserved area on the blue carpet for interviews.

The reserved space for the traditional media sits outside the stadium, with few luxuries other than water, powerful air conditioning and Wi-Fi.

All in for Harris

The work is different, explained 12-year-old influencer Knowa, who argued with Republican activists Charlie Kirk and Mike Lindell in a recent video that went viral.

Despite his young age, Knowa speaks with a self-confidence that many may not reach in a lifetime, and with an undeniable charisma.

For Knowa, the DNC is not the biggest event of his short career, even though it has seen him sitting alongside US Senator Bernie Sanders and former Georgia state legislator Stacey Abrams.

"No, I would say the White House... that was pretty big as well," he said.

The young campaigner and social media star is all in for Harris, having met her five times.

"The first thing I do when I wake up, I Google Kamala Harris. That's it," he told AFP.

Not all influencers at the convention are focused on politics, however.

Beauty, entertainment, lifestyle -- influencers covering all walks of life are adapting their brands to the convention.

Blair Imani, with 642,000 followers on Instagram, promotes one-and-a-half-minute videos on a diversity of topics on her "Smarter in Seconds" channel.

At the convention, Imani interviewed popular Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

"They've given us access, they've been so hospitable," said Imani.

"I know they're accommodating some content creators with hotel accommodations, because a lot of us are independent creators... They've gone above and beyond," she said.

Bengaluru Man Dies After Angry Driver Chases, Rams Bike. Incident On CCTV

A biker was killed after a car that allegedly chased him on the streets of Bengaluru, rammed his motorcycle from the back on Wednesday night. Police say the incident occurred after an argument between the two escalated into road rage.

CCTV footage shows the car on the tail of the motorcycle zooming through a city street.

Police say the two vehicles collided in the city's Vidyaranyapura area. The biker was severely injured and died from his injuries.

The police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) and arrested two people in the case. Further investigation is on.

Road rage on the rise in Bengaluru

This comes days after another incident of road rage when a biker attacked a couple's car, shattering their car's windscreen even as they screamed they had a baby with them.

A video showing the man screaming at the couple attacking their car in the middle of a Bengaluru road has gone viral on social media.

The biker was reportedly furious after the car took a left turn without any indication.

The furious biker tries to open the driver's door and then goes around the car to pick up a large stone, presumably to hurl it at the car. An onlooker snatches it from his hand.

Unsuccessful in opening the door, the biker shouts at the driver to open it. As he tries to drive away, the biker throws himself on the bonnet of the car and breaks off a windscreen wiper.

Even as people try to stop him, he hits the windscreen with the wiper, shattering the glass. The couple scream and a baby can be heard crying inside the car.

The Bengaluru City police responded to the post saying that police have taken the biker into custody and are investigating the case.

"The Bengaluru City police have arrested the culprit and taken him to police station. Waiting for more updates on the case! Thanks for the quick response," the Citizens Movement's X account said in an update.

Why Is Big Tech Opposing California Bill On Artificial Intelligence?

California legislators are set to vote on a bill as soon as this week that would broadly regulate how artificial intelligence is developed and deployed in California even as a number of tech giants have voiced broad opposition.

Here is background on the bill, known as SB 1047, and why it has faced backlash from Silicon Valley technologists and some lawmakers:

WHAT DOES THE BILL DO?

Advanced by State Senator Scott Wiener, a Democrat, the proposal would mandate safety testing for many of the most advanced AI models that cost more than $100 million to develop or those that require a defined amount of computing power. Developers of AI software operating in the state would also need to outline methods for turning off the AI models if they go awry, effectively a kill switch.

The bill would also give the state attorney general the power to sue if developers are not compliant, particularly in the event of an ongoing threat, such as the AI taking over government systems like the power grid.

As well, the bill would require developers to hire third-party auditors to assess their safety practices and provide additional protections to whistleblowers speaking out against AI abuses.

WHAT HAVE LAWMAKERS SAID?

SB 1047 has already passed the state Senate by a 32-1 vote. Last week it passed the state Assembly appropriations committee, setting up a vote by the full Assembly. If it passes by the end of the legislative session on Aug. 31, it would advance to Governor Gavin Newsom to sign or veto by Sept. 30.

Wiener, who represents San Francisco, home to OpenAI and many of the startups developing the powerful software, has said legislation is necessary to protect the public before advances in AI become either unwieldy or uncontrollable.

However, a group of California Congressional Democrats oppose the bill, including San Francisco's Nancy Pelosi; Ro Khanna, whose congressional district encompasses much of Silicon Valley; and Zoe Lofgren, from San Jose.

Pelosi this week called SB 1047 ill-informed and said it may cause more harm than good. In an open letter last week, the Democrats said the bill could drive developers from the state and threaten so-called open-source AI models, which rely on code that is freely available for anyone to use or modify.

WHAT DO TECH LEADERS SAY?

Tech companies developing AI - which can respond to prompts with fully formed text, images or audio as well as run repetitive tasks with minimal intervention - have called for stronger guardrails for AI's deployment. They have cited risks that the software could one day evade human intervention and cause cyberattacks, among other concerns. But they also largely balked at SB 1047.

Wiener revised the bill to appease tech companies, relying in part on input from AI startup Anthropic - backed by Amazon and Alphabet. Among other changes, he eliminated the creation of a government AI oversight committee.

Wiener also took out criminal penalties for perjury, though civil suits may still be brought.

Alphabet's Google and Meta have expressed concerns in letters to Wiener. Meta said the bill threatens to make the state unfavorable to AI development and deployment. The Facebook parent's chief scientist, Yann LeCun, in a July X post called the bill potentially harmful to research efforts.

OpenAI, whose ChatGPT is credited with accelerating the frenzy over AI since its broad release in late 2022, has said AI should be regulated by the federal government and that SB 1047 creates an uncertain legal environment.

Of particular concern is the potential for the bill to apply to open-source AI models. Many technologists believe open-source models are important for creating less risky AI applications more quickly, but Meta and others have fretted that they could be held responsible for policing open-source models if the bill passes. Wiener has said he supports open-source models and one of the recent amendments to the bill raised the standard for which open-sourced models are covered under its provisions.

The bill also has its backers in the technology sector. Geoffrey Hinton, widely credited as a "godfather of AI," former OpenAI employee Daniel Kokotajlo and researcher Yoshua Bengio have said they support the bill.

George Floyd's Killer Derek Chauvin Shifted From Prison After Knife Attack

Derek Chauvin has been transferred to a prison in Texas, the US Federal Bureau of Prisons said on Tuesday, nine months after the former Minneapolis police officer convicted in the death of George Floyd survived a prison stabbing in Arizona.

KEY QUOTE

"We can confirm Derek Michael Chauvin was transferred to the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Big Spring on August 20, 2024," a spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons said in an emailed statement.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

Chauvin was stabbed about 22 times last year while incarcerated in Tucson, the U.S. Justice Department said in December. Chauvin was seriously injured but survived.

Chauvin is serving 22-1/2 years for murder after being convicted in April 2021 of killing Floyd, a verdict widely seen as a landmark rebuke of the disproportionate use of police force against Black Americans. He is concurrently serving a 21-year sentence for violating Floyd's civil rights.

CONTEXT

Floyd's death in 2020 unleashed protests worldwide against police brutality and racism after Chauvin, who is white, knelt on the neck of the handcuffed Black man for more than eight minutes in a murder caught on cellphone video.

The suspect in Chauvin's stabbing was charged with attempted murder and other offenses.

Thomas Lane, a former Minneapolis officer convicted of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter in the Floyd killing, was released from federal prison in Colorado on Tuesday after serving a sentence of over three years.

Australia Great, In Custody For Choking A Woman, Makes Desperate Plea

Australia cricket great Michael Slater, who has been in custody since April for domestic violence charges, has made a despareate bail plea. The television commentator and former batter is accused of assaulting and choking a woman during an alleged violent tirade. Slater also allegedly sent her multiple abusive messages. Slater played 74 Test matches from 1993-2001, chalking up more than 5,000 runs for Australia including 14 centuries. He also played 42 One-Day Internationals before retiring from all cricket in 2004.

In a fresh bail on Tuesday, Slater's legal team told court that he secured a spot in a residential rehabilitation clinic in NSW.

Barrister Greg McGuire also said his client Slater would 'leave the state completely' to seek treatment in case of a bail. They are also ready for restrictions on alcohol and orders not to contact the complainant.

"There is a very real danger he (Slater) will have spent too much time in custody by the time the matter is disposed of," Mr McGuire said.

"The proposed conditions are he go to the Sydney clinic until such time as they are satisfied with his ability to leave. He's now faced the consequences of his behaviour....spending 4.5 months in custody."

Earlier, Slater reportedly collapsed in an Australian court in April after being refused bail on more than a dozen charges. The 54-year-old had to be helped to his feet by court staff after falling to the floor when a Queensland magistrate turned down his bail application, local media reported.

Earlier, bail was refused by Supreme Court Justice Paul Freeburn, who said Slater had a history of domestic violence. "The offences alleged are supported by some evidence, and are sustained and persistence," he had said then. "The risk of further or continued offending cannot be ignored."

Justice Freeburn said Slater had a long history of mental health conditions and had been diagnosed with ADHD, major depressive disorder, insomnia, alcohol use disorder and borderline personality disorder.

UN Warns Of "Unacceptable" Rising Violence Against Human Aid Workers

The United Nations on Monday condemned the "unacceptable" level of violence becoming commonplace against humanitarian workers, a record 280 of whom were killed worldwide in 2023.

And it warned that the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza is potentially fueling even higher numbers of such deaths this year.

"The normalization of violence against aid workers and the lack of accountability are unacceptable, unconscionable and enormously harmful for aid operations everywhere," Joyce Msuya, acting director of the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said in a statement on World Humanitarian Day.

"With 280 aid workers killed in 33 countries last year, 2023 marked the deadliest year on record for the global humanitarian community," a 137 per cent increase over 2022, when 118 aid workers died, OCHA said in the statement.

It cited the Aid Worker Security Database which has tracked such figures back to 1997.

The UN said more than half of the deaths in 2023, or 163, were aid workers killed in Gaza during the first three months of the war between Israel and Hamas, mainly in air strikes.

South Sudan, wracked by civil strife, and Sudan, where a war between two rival generals has been raging since April 2023, are the next deadliest conflicts for humanitarians, with 34 and 25 deaths respectively.

Also in the top 10 are Israel and Syria, with seven deaths each; Ethiopia and Ukraine, with six deaths each; Somalia with five fatalities; and four deaths both in Myanmar and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In all the conflicts, most of the deaths are among local staff.

Despite 2023's "outrageously high number" of aid worker fatalities, OCHA said 2024 "may be on track for an even deadlier outcome."

As of August 9, 176 aid workers have been killed worldwide, according to the Aid Worker Security Database.

Since October, when Hamas-led operatives launched a deadly raid into Israel, triggering the war, more than 280 aid workers have been killed in Gaza, the majority of them employees of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, according to OCHA.

Against this backdrop, the leaders of multiple humanitarian organizations were to send a letter Monday to UN member states calling for the international community "to end attacks on civilians, protect all aid workers, and hold perpetrators to account."

Each year the United Nations marks World Humanitarian Day on August 19, the anniversary of the 2003 attack on its Baghdad headquarters.

The bombing killed 22 people including Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN special representative to Iraq, and injured some 150 local and foreign aid workers.

Opinion: Imane Khelif, And The Scourge Of 'Transvestigators'

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The kind of bullying and abuse Olympic boxer Imane Khelif has been subjected to makes one thing crystal clear: in the age of social media, misinformation is easiest to amplify when it's rooted in misogyny, transphobia and racism, and amplified by verified, blue-ticked accounts on X. It has also made it clear that trans-hate will eventually come to haunt all women who do not fit traditional, conservative definitions of femininity.

Now that Imane Khelif has refused to take the online abuse in silence and is suing the key amplifiers - J.K. Rowling and Elon Musk - let's revisit the brutal online hate campaign unleashed against the Olympic gold medallist, all for being a 'non-feminine' woman of colour.

The Prime Purveyors Of Hate

On August 1, after facing Khelif for a whopping 45-second battle, Italian boxer Angela Carini forfeited the match. Later, she would tell the press, "I have never been punched so hard" and shed tears in front of the camera, as anyone would have in her position. However, seeing a white woman cry on television was, of course, too much to bear for champions of women's rights like author J. K. Rowling, who has had a history of making transphobic comments. Rowling cried foul on X about a "man" punching a woman and about men's rights activism having gone too far. Even the owner of X, Elon Musk, could not resist chiming in. It's another story that Musk's own views about transgender persons are worth some scrutiny and may be best described by his estranged daughter who he refuses to acknowledge.

The Imane Khelif case underlines a hard but unsurprising truth: we are not as progressive in 2024 as we would like to believe. Sure, there are more people today who are accepting of queer rights, gender equality, and just human rights in general, but in the country called the internet, this population is sparse.

Trans Hate Is Misogyny

When two people with a combined following of over 200 million people put out such derogatory posts against a woman, their legions of followers are bound to spew out the same misinformation, often with vile language. But Rowling and Musk's comments also fanned the fire of deep-rooted transphobia and misogyny that still burns in all stratas of human classes, races, and nationalities.

Trans hate is just another catalyst for overall misogyny. Groups abound on Reddit and Facebook where people aligned with the Rowling ideology simply attack any female celebrity they don't think is "woman enough" and must therefore, be a transsexual or transgender; there is a word for this group too, "transvestigators".  For example, if you like to lift weights and be muscular, then you are not feminine, and hence make for a perfect target for these 'tranvestigators'. Like sports? Big cars? Not dainty, petite, blonde, and light-eyed enough? Wear too much makeup as if to hide male appearance? Wear too little makeup because you are a man trying to pass off as a 'sporty woman'? Well, women who exhibit such traits "aren't women", according to tranvestigators.

Coming back to the hate campaign against Khelif. Soon after her win in Paris and its fallout, conservative-leaning media outlets and social media handles started talking about her 2023 disqualification by the International Boxing Association (IBA) for failing a 'gender eligibility test'. No matter the fact that the IBA itself was questioned by the Olympics for their 'methods' and that there have been accusations of corruption as well. The International Olympic Association (IOC) banned the IBA last year over its governance and finance issues, with the Olympic body allowing the boxing competition to be held in Paris. But alas, this grain of truth was buried deep under the rubble of misinformation that flooded the internet.

A number of questions have been raised amid this storm. "How can 'he' be a woman?", "IBA must have banned 'him' for a reason!", "XY is a man! Only men have Testosterone!", "He clearly looks like a man. He is built like a man."

Let's try to answer them.

Man, Woman, Other?

Khelif's story is very Dangal-like. Indian audiences, if they read her full interview with UNICEF, may relate to the story of a young girl joining a sport that's dominated by men. But unlike Dangal, she did not have a father ready to fight the world. She fought mostly alone in her childhood, while her family battled poverty to feed their children and sustain the family.

There's also the fact that Algeria is a deeply religious Islamic country, where being trans may invite a host of legal challenges. If any of the 'tranvestigators' like Rowling or Musk followers had bothered to do a simple Google search, they would know Algeria would probably never send a 'trans' person to represent their country in the Olympics.

XX or XY?

Doesn't matter, honestly. Anyone who has studied genetics and chromosomes can answer this: the set of chromosomes that define sex (not gender) are named so based on their shape. Zoya Fatima, a teacher at Jamia Senior Secondary School, explains that women have two chromosomes shaped like 'X', while in men, one of them is shaped like a 'Y'. "Genetic mutation can cause a foetus with XX to have a Y-shaped chromosome," she explains, "They can have all female genitalia, even uterus in some cases, but ovaries in almost all cases are non-functional. But they can be mothers via IVF and have normal pregnancies. So it is incorrect to say that all XY automatically classify as male and man."

If we were to go by the definitions recommended by conservative social media, then millions of women would immediately lose their right to be called a woman for having elevated testosterone levels. While testosterone is considered the 'male hormone', women produce it too - many with hormonal disorders, such as PCOS, tend to produce too much of it. Will these conditions void a woman's right to be called a 'woman'?

If we consider science for our definitions, the majority of women with XY or XXY or XXYY chromosomal structures have one common denominator: a non-functional ovary. So that begs the question, is a perfectly functional ovary fundamental for being classified as a 'woman'? If yes, what about a few thousand women who have ovarian insufficiency? Will they cease to be known as women?

The Question Of Race

Women of colour who don't fit conservative definitions of femininity have always had it worse. Barely a day before her match, Khelif's Hungarian opponent, Luca Hamori, posted an incendiary picture on Instagram that showed Khelif as a 'beast'. For centuries now, Black women have been mocked for their 'masculinity'. Not too far in India itself, sprinter Duttee Chand had been on the receiving end of primitive gender tests. "In 2014, I challenged the IOC's rule that a person with a higher testosterone level should not participate in the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland. It was noted that hormonal levels cannot increase athletic performance. I suffered a lot at that time. I faced a lot of controversy regarding my gender," Chand told PTI after the Imane Khelif controversy erupted.

The abuse and attacks Imane Khelif has faced online will be remembered for years to come. The key takeaway is this: misinformation driven by racist, misogynist ideologies often travels much, much faster than the truth.

"We Were Renters": Kamala Harris Shares Story Behind Childhood Photo

US Vice-President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, shared a childhood photo of her and her mother, revealing that as a teenager she worked at fast food chains to earn money.

In a heartfelt social media post, the 59-year-old recalled her childhood growing up in a middle-class household, where her mother “saved for over a decade to buy a home”. “I was a teenager when the day finally came—and I can still remember how excited she was,” she revealed in a post on X. Ms Harris also shared her own experience working at McDonald's in college to “earn spending money.”

“That only gets harder when the cost of living goes up,” she said, underlining the increasing struggles faced by many Americans when the cost of living increases, promising to make it a top priority to bring down costs and “increase economic security” for all if she is elected President.

This pledge comes just ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where Ms Harris is set to step onto the stage as the party's official presidential nominee. Her candidacy was cemented after receiving overwhelming support in a virtual roll call of delegates, as confirmed by the Democratic National Committee

However, with the convention fast approaching, voters are keen to understand where the Democratic presidential nominee stands on key issues. Kamala Harris' stance on economic issues includes supporting policies that benefit the middle class, such as mortgage assistance and tax credits for parents, as per BBC. On immigration, Ms Harris has shifted towards bipartisan border security solutions, addressing the root causes of migration from Central America.

Ms Harris is a strong advocate for reproductive rights and has vowed to protect them nationwide if elected president. She also supports NATO and continued aid to Ukraine, while maintaining Israel's right to self-defence.

Regarding taxes, Ms Harris opposes increases for those earning under $400,000 and supports corporate tax rate hikes. She aims to expand healthcare access without eliminating private insurance. Ms Harris also supports gun safety regulations, including red-flag laws, to prevent gun violence.

IMF's Gita Gopinath Goes Bullish On India's Economic Growth

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his Independence Day address to the nation, said the country is on its way to become the third-largest economy with big reforms across sectors, Gita Gopinath, Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has stated that the country is likely to achieve this feat by 2027.

India has become the fifth-largest economy in the world, and is set to be among the top three global economic powers soon.

According to Ms Gopinath, India's growth did much better than expected during the last fiscal year (FY24) as private consumption growth recovered across sectors, especially in the rural economy.

From two-wheeler sales to fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs), the overall consumption is surging. "With better monsoons come better harvests and agricultural incomes go up," she was quoted as saying in media reports.

According to latest data by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the total production of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers and quadricycle reached 24,37,138 units in July. Two-wheeler segment posted a decent growth of 12.5 per cent in July compared to the same month last year.

On the other hand, the FMCG market in India remains resilient despite challenges. According to marketing research firm Kantar Worldpanel, the FMCG sector is expected to register 6.1 per cent yearly growth in FY 2024-25 in the rural market, which was 4.4 per cent last year.

According to the report, volumes in rural market could equal those in the urban market, which is higher at present. The rural FMCG market is more valuable to the industry than before and is generating almost half the volume and value for the sector.

Ms Gopinath also mentioned that the country needs to create millions of additional jobs in the next 5-6 years.

The IMF has raised its economic growth forecast for the country for FY25 to 7 per cent from 6.8 per cent projected in April. According to RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, if the average growth India recorded over the three years is seen, the average comes to 8.3 per cent. In the current year, they have given a projection of 7.2 per cent growth.

For Debate Against Kamala Harris, Donald Trump Picks This Hindu American

Gearing up for his debate with US Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump, and has brought in the former Democratic Congresswoman and Hindu-American leader Tulsi Gabbard to help sharpen his attacks, the New York Times reported citing two people aware of Trump's schedule.

She joined Trump's practice session at the latter's private club and home, Mar-a-Lago.

Trump and Harris, an Indian-origin leader, are set to face off in the ABC News debate on September 10.

Gabbard, who left the Democratic Party after her 2020 presidential run and has rebranded herself as a celebrity among Trump's base of support, has long been friendly with Trump and was also speculated to be his running mate for some time.

Gabbard's involvement in Trump's debate preparation, was partly because of her own performance in a 2019 Democratic presidential primary debate, when Gabbard eviscerated Harris in a memorable onstage encounter.

Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for Trump, confirmed Gabbard's involvement in an email, NYT reported.

Leavitt said the former president has "proven to be one of the best debaters in political history as evidenced by his knockout blow to Joe Biden. He does not need traditional debate prep but will continue to meet with respected policy advisers and effective communicators like Tulsi Gabbard, who successfully dominated Kamala Harris on the debate stage in 2020."

Though Trump says he "doesn't need to" prepare for debates, the former President has spent more time this year practicing for debates than he did in either 2016 or 2020, the New York Times reported citing advisers who have worked with him.

He still doesn't do traditional debate prep. Nobody played Mr. Biden in his sessions ahead of their CNN debate on June 27.

Ahead of his CNN debate with Biden in June, Trump sat with advisers for blocks of time or informally on plane trips and discussed potential topics and lines of questioning. In more formal sessions at Mar-a-Lago, aides have sat in chairs opposite him, playing the role of moderators.

Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida asked especially combative questions, according to a person who was in the room. Other lawmakers, including his eventual running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, have also spent time with Trump on policy topics.

Biden's halting and disjointed performance in his June debate with Trump ultimately led him to him dropping out of the race. Trump's aides are expected to handle preparations similarly for his debate with Harris, scheduled for September 10, NYT reported.

Notably, Gabbard brings some key qualities to Trump's role: She's a woman, at a moment when Trump is for a second time facing a woman as his general election rival; she's a former House member, giving her policy experience; and, perhaps most importantly for Trump, she has been on a debate stage with Harris and delivered a stinging attack against her record as a prosecutor, New York Times reported.

However, Gabbard's attacks on Harris in the July 2019 debate, all came from the left.

She alleged that Harris, when she was a district attorney in San Francisco, "put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana."

She also accused Harris of having obstructed evidence that could have let an innocent man leave death row, doing so only when a court "forced her to."

Harris, on the other hand, replied that she was "proud of making a decision to not just give fancy speeches, or be in a legislative body and give speeches on the floor, but actually doing the work."

Following the debate, Harris mocked Gabbard's low standing in the polls. Eventually, Harris dropped out of that race in December 2019, and Gabbard did the same months later, in March 2020.

What Imane Khelif Said On Elon Musk, JK Rowling Questioning Her Gender

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who won the gold medal in boxing at the Paris Olympics, said that questions about her gender affected and hurt her a lot. From former US President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk to British author JK Rowling and scores of others on social media targeted Ms Khelif following her first-round bout against Italy's Angela Carini that lasted 46 seconds.

“This thing that affected me, I'm not lying to you, it affected me,” Ms Khelif said in an interview with El Birad in Algeria. A translated video of the interview was posted on X by journalist Salaiman Ahmed.

"It affected me a lot, it hurt me a lot. I can't describe to you the amount of fear I had," Ms Khelif said.

She wondered why there was an uproar from big politicians around the world. "I was afraid, but thank God, I managed to overcome this phase, thanks to the specialists who helped me overcome this stage," she added.

“The scenario was very scary. Thank God, all the people of Algeria and the Arab world knew Imane Ms Khelif with her femininity, her courage, her will,” Ms Khelif said.

Ms Khelif's reaction came after Donald Trump repeatedly referred to her as a man during a campaign rally in Montana on August 9.

“Who wants men to participate in women's sports? I would like to congratulate the young woman who transitioned from a man into a boxer. He... She won the gold medal," Trump said.

Musk, who has thrown his weight behind Trump for the November 5 Presidential polls, also took potshots at the Algerian boxer by indirectly referring to her as a man in a series of social media posts.

Imane Khelif along with Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan was subjected to trolling and intense criticism after it surfaced that the boxers were disqualified during the 2023 IBA World Boxing Championships for failing gender eligibility tests.

Ms Khelif, who defeated China's Yang Liu in the Paris Olympics 2024 for gold, has also filed a cyberbullying lawsuit naming Elon Musk and Harry Potter author J K Rowling over alleged "acts of aggravated cyber harassment", according to Variety.

The lawsuit has been filed against X in France.

NDTV Impact: Probe Team Ordered Over Minister's Role In Disappearance

The Supreme Court has ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the mysterious disappearance of Mansingh Patel, a case that garnered significant attention following an exclusive interview on NDTV. The interview featured Sitaram Patel, the son of the missing person, who made serious allegations against then Madhya Pradesh's Revenue and Transport Minister Govind Singh Rajput, accusing him of involvement in his father's disappearance and illegal acquisition of their ancestral land.

In January last year, in an exclusive interview with NDTV, Sitaram Patel claimed that his father, Mansingh Patel, went missing in August 2016 after filing complaints against Mr Rajput. The complaints were related to the illegal occupation and construction on their ancestral land in Sagar district, allegedly by the minister and his associates.

Mansingh Patel

Mansingh Patel

Sitaram Patel further alleged that his father's disappearance was likely a result of a conspiracy to silence him and seize the valuable property. Despite multiple complaints to local authorities and the CM Helpline, no substantial police action has been taken to trace Mansingh Patel.

In response to a writ petition filed by the OBC Mahasabha, the Supreme Court took cognizance of the case, acknowledging the gravity of the allegations and the involvement of politically influential individuals. The petitioners sought a writ of Habeas Corpus to produce Mansingh Patel before the court, alleging illegal detention and potential criminality by the respondents, including Mr Rajput.

The Supreme Court, during the hearing, expressed concern over the lack of progress in the investigation by the local police and directed the Superintendent of Police of Sagar district, to submit a detailed affidavit outlining the chronological developments in the case. The court noted that despite the serious nature of the allegations, the local police had failed to conduct a fair, independent, and thorough investigation, further criticizing the composition of the initial SIT, which was seen as inadequate.

The Supreme Court directed the Director General of Police, Madhya Pradesh, to constitute a new SIT comprising senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers from outside the state.

The SIT is mandated to re-investigate the disappearance of Mansingh Patel, with the following key directives:

The court ordered that the Missing Person Complaint be immediately registered as an FIR, initially against unknown persons, to ensure the investigation is conducted with due seriousness.

The SIT was instructed to provide protection to witnesses and ensure that their statements are recorded in a conducive environment, with video documentation and, where necessary, under Section 164 of the Cr.P.C.

The investigation must also include a thorough examination of revenue records related to the disputed land, identifying the actions that led to the disappearance of Mansingh Patel.

The SIT is required to complete the investigation within four months, after which further legal actions will follow based on the findings.

Earlier, the police stated that between September 2017 to September 2019, it visited various places to locate the missing person, but in vain. The top court rejected the contentions of the state against the plea's maintainability.

"We are, however, not impressed by the objection. The reporting of the commission of a cognizable offence is a statutory obligation on one and all. Where such reporting has been discarded by the police, deliberately or otherwise, the vigilant section of society or social help groups are expected to espouse such cause for securing justice to the voiceless victims and/or those who have been silenced under mysterious circumstances," it said.

Owing to the serious nature of allegations against the influential, the composition of the existing SIT by the State is a mere eye-wash, the Supreme Court said. "It won't be possible at all for that SIT to take the investigation to a logical conclusion which can inspire the confidence of the family, near and dear ones of the victim or the public in general."

Is Great Britain Still Great? Nation Grapples With Deepening Poverty Crisis

Two centuries ago, the British Empire ruled the lands, the seas, and a quarter of all people on Earth. The influence of the once-dominant United Kingdom has significantly shrunk, and in 2022, its former colony, India, surpassed it to become the world's fifth-largest economy.

The 21st century has been a rather tough time for the UK, starting with a monetary crisis in 2008, which exposed some underlying economic weaknesses, and then the cutting of long-lasting relations with its most significant trade partner, the EU, after the Brexit vote in 2016.

The decision to leave the European Union in 2020 not only caused the UK's economy to suffer but also stirred up internal divisions, especially in Scotland and Northern Ireland, where independence movements gained momentum.

The Covid-19 pandemic made the problems even worse, thus contributing to the mess. The damage done in terms of the death tolls and economic recessions was, among the developed countries, one of the worst.

One thing that stands out from these circumstances and hardships is that Britain used to be a superpower but now is just a middle-sized power that is trying to adjust to its reduced importance in the global community.

Will Hutton who is an Observer columnist, writes in The Guardian, "2 million British people report going without food for at least a day in any month.Malnutrition stalks children - Britain's five-year-olds are among the shortest in Europe. One in three children live in poverty. It is time to stop talking and thinking of Britain as a rich country. We are poor and living on the edge."

"Britain has to start thinking of itself not as a rich industrial country but as a poor country facing first-order economic development challenges. Large parts of the UK are scarcely better off than middle-income developing countries, and on current trends are about to get poorer."

UK Poverty Soars to 30-Year High

The UK's absolute poverty increased at its fastest rate in thirty years due to the energy price problem.

According to UNICEF and Child Poverty Action Group, in 2022/23, the UK government estimated that 4.3 million children, or 30% of all children in the country, were living in relative low-income households after housing costs. This is an increase of 100,000 from the previous year, and 700,000 since 2010.

The government attributes the rise to high inflation caused by the war in Ukraine and supply chain issues. They also say that falling inflation, rising real wages, and higher benefits will help low-income households in the future.

Over the past few weeks, severe violence has erupted in several English cities as well as in Northern Ireland, indicating widespread anger throughout the nation. The UK Police have made almost 1,000 arrests in relation to the riots that included acts of violence, looting, and arson in addition to racist attacks.

Meth Found In Sweets Handed Out To Children By New Zealand Charity

Pineapple sweets dished out by a New Zealand charity have tested positive for potentially lethal amounts of methamphetamine, police said Wednesday, sparking an urgent race to remove them from the streets.

Anti-poverty charity the Auckland City Mission raised the alarm after discovering a batch of the sweets was contaminated with the highly addictive and illegal narcotic, police said.

"An investigation is underway and police are treating the matter as a priority given the risk to the public."

The New Zealand Drug Foundation said a test sample of an innocuous-looking piece of white candy in a bright yellow wrapper indicated it contained methamphetamine.

Foundation spokeswoman Sarah Helm said the tested sweet contained approximately three grams of meth -- hundreds of times greater than the common dose taken by users.

"Swallowing that much methamphetamine is extremely dangerous and could result in death."

Helm urged people who had received confectionaries from the Auckland charity not to consume them.

"We don't know how widespread it is."

The candy was donated anonymously by a member of the public, the charity said, in a sealed branded package. The sweets were then distributed into food parcels.

"There is a potential for New Zealand that there is a lethal substance dressed up as a lolly (sweet)," Helen Robinson from Auckland City Mission told reporters.

"We have to work on the assumption that this was a kind of batch."

The charity believes up to 400 people could have received the affected sweets in a food package.

Robinson said so far eight separate families had been affected, but no one had yet been hospitalised.

She knew of an instance where a parent gave one of the candies to her child, who immediately spat it out.

Robinson said she had been told the potent contaminated sweets tasted "acrid and revolting".

"You could have only a very small touch or lick of the substance and still be deeply affected," she warned.

A contaminated sweet was taken for testing when a person felt strange after starting to eat it and noticed a bitter taste.

Methamphetamine can cause chest pain, racing heart, seizures, delirium and loss of consciousness, the drug foundation warned.

Helm told Radio New Zealand it is common for drug smugglers to hide illegal narcotics in food form.

"We suspect somebody hasn't intentionally sought to poison children. It will be up to police to determine," she added in the interview.

After Trump, Elon Musk "Happy To Host" Kamala Harris Ahead Of US Polls

Former United States President Donald Trump was interviewed by billionaire Elon Musk on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) today. The interview had a rocky start and was delayed by 40 minutes after the Tesla Chief announced that there was a cyber attack on his social media platform. The two businessmen discussed a variety of topics ahead of US polls including immigration, layoffs, the assassination attempt on Mr Trump and climate change. Amid this, Mr Musk has now invited US Vice President Kamala Harris for a chat on X Spaces.

He took to the microblogging platform and wrote, "Happy to host Kamala on an X Spaces too."

Since being shared, his post has amassed a variety of reactions online.

The Trump campaign reacted to the post with a folded hands emoji.

A person joked, "Same chance of her agreeing to come on as me meeting Abraham Lincoln tomorrow morning."

"It would be really smart of her to do this. Significantly simpler logistics than doing a rally, with a far larger potential impact. I'm sure you'd be a fair interviewer," said a person.

A user stated, "Free Speech! @VP should 100% do this. The American people deserve to hear your thoughts on the issues!"

Meanwhile, the Republican candidate slammed Ms Harris and said, "The number of illegals Kamala (Harris) has welcomed into our communities is much bigger than we think." He told Elon Musk, "Countries are emptying their prisons - and sending them to our country. They're bringing crime and violence to our backyards," he said.

In a separate comment, he also said that the country "will go out of business," if she wins US elections 2024. "We don't have a president right now - and Kamala is even worse. She's a San Francisco liberal who destroyed that city, destroyed California, and will destroy our country if she's elected," Donald Trump said.

Reacting to the same, Ms Harris' presidential campaign issued a statement on X. They said, "Donald Trump's extremism and dangerous Project 2025 agenda is a feature not a glitch of his campaign, which was on full display for those unlucky enough to listen in tonight during whatever that was on X.com."

They added, "Trump's entire campaign is in service of people like Elon Musk and himself - self-obsessed rich guys who will sell out the middle class and who cannot run a livestream in the year 2024."

Rohit, Virat Likely To Play Duleep Trophy, Only Player Exempted Is...

After a disappointing ODI series against Sri Lanka, the Indian men's cricket team gears up for a grueling Test schedule, also the start of Gautam Gambhir's stint as head coach in red-ball cricket. Gambhir has profoundly expressed the importance of domestic red-ball cricket and he is keen to implement the same for Indian national team players ahead of the start of the Test season. A report has claimed that Gambhir is keen to see the likes of Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, as well as seniors like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli participate in the Duleep Trophy.

A report in Indian Express suggested that India's star players like Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Surykumar Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav have all been asked to play in the Duleep Trophy. The only man who has been given an exception is ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah. He has been given a long break from cricketing assignments, as part of workload management.

As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) picks the Duleep Trophy squads, the report has stated that Kohli and Rohit are also set to be named in the roster. Ishan Kishan is also likely to be picked for the Duleep Trophy. But, veteran stars like Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara are unlikely to get the nod.

India's next Test assignment against Bangladesh starts September 19. The Duleep Trophy campaign is to begin on September 05. The selectors are reportedly undecided on the inclusion of Bumrah to India's Test squad for the first two matches against Bangladesh too as India are scheduled to play 10 Test matches in the next 4 months, with 5 of them to be against Australia.

The selectors could decide to give Bumrah a rest but Mohammed Shami is expected to find a spot in the team, having been out of action since the conclusion of the ODI World Cup last year. Duleep Trophy format:

The Ajit Agarkar's panel is to pick the four squads - India A, India B, India C and India D - for the tournament. The old zonal format has been done away with. The matches will be played in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. The BCCI is also reportedly planning to keep one round at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

The Duleep Trophy schedule, however, will also have some overlap with the Bangladesh series, as the domestic tournament is scheduled to conclude on September 24. India's first Test against Bangladesh begins on September 19.

The board is also planning a short camp before the start of the Test series in Chennai.
