Watch: Centuries-Old Shipwreck Washes Up On Canadian Coast, Sparks Mystery

A centuries-old mysterious shipwreck recently washed up on the Canadian coastline, leaving locals and officials puzzled. The 80ft ship was first spotted by Gordon Blackmore on January 20 while hunting for seabirds on the shores of Cape Ray on the Newfoundland coast. It is believed that Hurricane Fiona dislodged the vessel which is thought to have been built in the 19th century, as per BBC

Corey Purchase, owner of NiCor Photos posted a drone video on YouTube.

Watch the video here:

''This is a great, great event,'' Neil Burgess, president of the Shipwreck Preservation Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, told the Guardian

"If it's oak or beech or a hardwood species like that, it will tell us it wasn't made here in Newfoundland and was probably made over in Europe somewhere. There are databases of shipwrecks we can search for what was recorded as being lost around Cape Ray,'' Mr Burgess told UPI

He suspects the ship was freed by a combination of coastal erosion and the force of post-tropical storm Fiona, which destroyed homes in the region last year.

A local government team has now been dispatched to assess and preserve the wreck. Meanwhile, the event has sparked a mystery within the coastal community, which has been speculating about the wreck's possible origins. The community's local Facebook page has become a forum for the exchange of suggestions and maritime knowledge from across the globe.

''It is a part of our history that has just been awakened. Some descendants will still want to know the names and the places where their ancestors were lost in the icy waters off our shores. It would be good for all of us if we could offer some history we know and a place for remembrance. At least a marker. This is our history. Let's find out,'' wrote Elizabeth Gover, a resident.

Malaysia's New King Owns 300 Luxury Cars, 1 Was Gifted By Adolf Hitler

At 65, Johor Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar is set to ascend the throne in Malaysia, bringing with him a wealth estimated at a staggering $5.7 billion and an empire that extends far beyond the boundaries of his country.

Sultan Ibrahim's realm encompasses an array of ventures, from real estate and mining to telecommunications and palm oil. The opulent Istana Bukit Serene, his official residence, is a testament to his family's wealth. The ruler's collection of over 300 luxury cars, including one purportedly gifted by Adolf Hitler, is housed on the grounds, while a fleet of private jets, including a gold-and-blue Boeing 737, sits nearby. His family also owns a private army.

A Glimpse Into The Sultan's Wealth

While the estimated family fortune is pegged at $5.7 billion by Bloomberg, the true extent of Sultan Ibrahim's wealth is believed to be much beyond that. His holdings include a 24% stake in U Mobile, one of Malaysia's major cell service providers, with additional investments in private and public companies totaling $588 million.

He also owns $4 billion worth of land in Singapore, including Tyersall Park, an expansive area adjacent to the Botanic Gardens.

The Sultan's investment portfolio stands at $1.1 billion, thanks to substantial cash flow from share and real estate transactions.

The Sultan's Global Footprint

As Sultan Ibrahim prepares to officially assume the throne today, his role, though largely ceremonial, assumes significance in Malaysia's evolving political landscape. Unlike his predecessors, Sultan Ibrahim exhibits a unique blend of flamboyance and outspokenness.

His close ties with Singapore's leadership and business associations with prominent Chinese developers position him to exert considerable influence on both domestic and foreign policy.

Sultan Ibrahim's influence extends beyond his wealth to impact the economic landscape of Malaysia. A gatekeeper for business opportunities, particularly for the Malay community, he has played a pivotal role in major projects through joint ventures with Chinese tycoons.

His business interests and alliances with Chinese investors, coupled with a special relationship with Singapore's leaders, position him as a key player in the regional economic landscape.

Canadian Province To Pause Approvals Of Colleges Seeking Foreign Students

British Columbia will stop approvals of new colleges seeking to enroll international students until February 2026, the government of the Canadian province said on Monday.

The province will set minimum language requirements at private training institutions and also set higher standards for labor market needs and degree quality.

The move comes as the Canadian government has been attempting to curb a surge in immigration of international students, which has been partly blamed for a shortage of rental units and a 7.7% rise in rents nationwide in December versus a year earlier.

Last week, the federal government announced an immediate, two-year cap on new international student permits, which will cut the country's intake by 35% this year to about 360,000. It will also stop giving work permits to some students after graduation.

As of the end of last year, there were about 1 million international study permit holders in Canada, an amount about three times larger than that of a decade ago, according to government data.

Canada has emerged as a popular destination for international students since it is relatively easy for them to obtain work permits after they finish courses.

Crisis-Hit Evergrande, Owing Over $300 Billion, Heads To Liquidation

China Evergrande Group received a liquidation order from a Hong Kong court, setting off what's likely to be a daunting process to carve up one of the biggest victims of a years-long and nationwide property debt crisis.

A wind-up will end up in the company being managed by provisional liquidators and addressing issues, including control by founder and Chairman Hui Ka Yan, Judge Linda Chan said in the city's High Court on Monday morning. Trading in Evergrande shares was suspended after the stock tumbled 21%, giving it a market value of just HK$2.15 billion ($275 million).

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The ruling cements the homebuilder - carrying 2.39 trillion yuan ($333 billion) of liabilities - as the most prominent symbol of a real estate crisis that led to slower economic growth and a slew of defaults. The liquidation will be a test case of the legal reach of Hong Kong courts in China, where most of Evergrande's assets reside, with any new management also needing to navigate asset sales in an industry lacking liquidity and confidence.

"The market will pay close attention to what the liquidators can do after being appointed, especially whether they can achieve recognition from any of the three designated PRC courts" under a 2021 arrangement between China and Hong Kong, said Lance Jiang, restructuring partner at law firm Ashurst. "The liquidators will have very limited powers of enforcement over onshore assets in mainland China if they cannot get such recognition."

While Hong Kong's courts have issued at least three wind-up orders for other Chinese developers since the crisis began in 2021, none comes close to Evergrande in complexity, asset size, and the number of stakeholders. There are also few signs that the liquidation of Jiayuan International Group and Yango Justice International Ltd., a unit of Yango Group Co., are moving forward much.

Hong Kong's insolvency proceedings have limited recognition in China, whose courts may also appoint administrators in their own jurisdictions. That leaves open the question of the claims of the $17 billion of Evergrande's dollar bond holders covered in its proposed restructuring plan.

Most of Evergrande's dollar notes traded at around 1.5 cents on the dollar as of last Friday, an indication that investors have little expectations on repayment, according to Bloomberg-compiled data.

"The company has made all efforts possible and is sorry about the winding-up order," Evergrande Chief Executive Officer Shawn Siu said in the statement. "The company will ensure home deliveries and steadily promote normal operation of the group." It will also communicate with the liquidator, he said.

The petition for liquidation was filed in June 2022 by Top Shine Global Limited of Intershore Consult (Samoa) Ltd., which was a strategic investor in the homebuilder's online sales platform. Evergrande's offshore restructuring plan also covers $14.7 billion debt claims of other offshore liabilities, according to its restructuring document dated March.

While creditors weren't immediately seeking a wind-up order, Chan noted the lack of progress. "The company said it will do one, two, three," she said. "None of that has been done."

Still, "even after a wind-up, it's still possible for the company to put forward a scheme of arrangement," Chan said.

Chan, who has presided over a string of developer hearings, will conduct a hearing on a potential regulating order at 2:30pm Monday, according to information on the city's judiciary website. Such orders mean that the court would regulate the winding-up process, potentially including appointing a liquidator.

When Evergrande, which for a time in the last decade was the country's largest builder by sales, first defaulted on a dollar bond in December 2021, it sent a shock wave through China's markets with investors fearing contagion. Beijing has sought to put a floor to the real estate crisis, rolling out measures to revive home sales and provide liquidity to debt-laden developers.

Country Garden Holdings Co., also a former top builder, is now the focus for investors after its default in October. While Evergrande failed to reach agreement with its creditors, there's been a glimmer of hope for investors with the restructuring agreement for Sunac China Holdings Ltd. In November.

Evergrande proposed its last restructuring plan in January and aims to present new term sheets by March, according to participants in the Monday hearing that included legal representatives from Evergrande and its ad hoc bondholder group. That effort failed to buy Evergrande more breathing room.

Any court-appointed liquidator is likely to face a tricky process. Most Evergrande projects are operated by local units, which could be hard for the offshore liquidator to seize. Hui was also placed under police control in September on suspicion of committing crimes, which could complicate the proceedings.

The property market has continued to even as China introduced a slew of new measures to stem sinking prices and sluggish demand.

"The macroeconomic impact should be limited as the liquidation itself is unlikely to exert more pressure on the battered property sector," said Gary Ng, senior economist at Natixis SA. "However, it will worsen sentiment as investors will be worried that there is a snowball effect on other pending cases."

Evergrande's winding-up petition case number is HCCW 220/2022.

China Approves Over 40 AI Models For Public Use in 6 Months

By Josh Ye

HONG KONG - China has approved more than 40 artificial intelligence (AI) models for public use in the first six months since authorities began the govin AI development, according to Chinese media.

Chinese regulators granted approvals to a total of 14 large language models (LLM) for public use last week, Chinese state-backed Securities Times reported. It marks the fourth batch of approvals China has granted, which counts Xiaomi Corp, 4Paradigm and 01.AI among the recipients.

Beijing started requiring tech companies to obtain approval from regulators to open their LLMs to the public last August. It underscored China's approach towards developing AI technology while striving to keep it under its purview and control.

Beijing approved its first batch of AI models in August shortly after the approval process was adopted. Baidu, Alibaba and ByteDance were among China's first companies to receive approvals.

Chinese regulators then granted two more batches of approvals in November and December before another batch was given the greenlight this month. While the government has not disclosed the exact list of approved companies available for public checks, Securities Times said on Sunday more than 40 AI models have been approved.

Chinese companies have been rushing to develop AI products ever since OpenAI's chatbot ChatGPT took the world by storm in 2022.

At the time, China had 130 LLMs, accounting for 40% of the global total and just behind the United States' 50% share, according to brokerage CLSA.

One of China's leading ChatGPT-like chatbots, Baidu's Ernie Bot, has garnered more than 100 million users, according to the company's CTO in December.

"My Beautiful Wife...": Bopanna On Life-Changing Chat After Aus Open Win

India's tennis star Rohan Bopanna became the oldest man to win a Grand Slam after he and his men's doubles partner Matthew Ebden won the Australia Open on Saturday. Bopanna (aged 43 years 329 days) and Ebden defeated Italy's Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in straight sets 7-6, 7-5 in a thrilling encounter. This was only Bopanna's second Grand Slam succes, having won the the 2017 French Open in mixed doubles with Canada's Gabriela Dabrowski. After the final at the Rod Laver Arena, the 43-year-old credited his wife Supriya Annaiah Bopanna for his success.

Having said that, Bopanna's old quote on his wife has gone viral on social media. Earlier this month, Bopanna revealed how Supriya motivated him during his lean patch.

"My wife said it beautifully one day, 'when you change limitations to opportunities, everything changes.' We are always told at 25 this has to happen, by 30 this has to happen, at 40 this will happen. It's a thing which is told to us constantly, whether it is sport or life, whether it is marriage, having kids, whatever it may be. But when you change that into opportunities, then the limitations go away," Bopanna recalled, as quoted by ESPN.

After the final, Bopanna also reaveled that a few years ago he was thinking about his retirement from the sport.

"My beautiful wife, Supriya, & my daughter, Tridha.. thank you for all the support, all the love. I know a couple years ago I sent her a video message & said 'I'm gonna call it a day.' Because I wasn't winning matches at all. I went 5 months without winning a match. I thought that was gonna be the end of my journey. Perseverance inside me just kept me going. I really changed so many things & found a wonderful partner," he added.

With Ebden in company, Bopanna will soon will become the oldest number one in men's doubles history when the new rankings are released next week.

Prostate Cancer Treatment: Why Active Surveillance Is Need Of The Hour

Although about 1 in 8 men in the US will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, only about 1 in 44 will die from it. Most men diagnosed with prostate cancer die from other causes, especially those with low-risk prostate cancer that usually grows so slowly it isn't life-threatening.

However, until about a decade ago, most men diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer were immediately treated with surgery or radiation. Although both can cure the cancer, they can also have serious, life-changing complications, including urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction.

I am a family physician and researcher studying how patient-physician relationships and decision-making processes affect prostate cancer screening and treatment. In our recently published research, my colleagues and I found that men are increasingly opting against immediate treatment. Instead, they are choosing a more conservative approach known as active surveillance: keeping a close eye on the cancer and holding off on treatment until there are signs of progression.

Prostate cancer screening trouble

Prostate cancer screening is controversial because it often leads to overdiagnosis and overtreatment of cancers that would have otherwise been harmless if left undetected and untreated.

Screening for prostate cancer typically uses a blood test that measures levels of a protein that prostate cells produce called prostate-specific antigen, or PSA. Elevated PSA levels may indicate the presence of prostate cancer, but not all cases are aggressive or life-threatening. PSA levels can also be elevated for reasons other than prostate cancer, like an enlarged prostate gland due to aging.

Due to widespread PSA screening in the U.S., over half of prostate cancers detected through screening are low-risk. Concerns about overdiagnosis and overtreatment of low-risk cancers are the main reasons why screening is not recommended unless patients still want to be screened after discussing the pros and cons with their doctor.

What is active surveillance?

Active surveillance is a safe and effective way to manage low-risk prostate cancer by limiting treatments such as surgery or radiation only to cancers that are growing or becoming more aggressive. It involves monitoring tumors through regular checkups and tests.

Active surveillance is different from “watchful waiting,” another conservative strategy with a less intense type of follow-up that includes fewer tests and only relieves symptoms. In contrast, active surveillance involves more rigorous monitoring, with more tests to keep a close eye on cancer with the intention to cure if needed.

Active surveillance allows patients to delay or avoid invasive treatments and their associated side effects. It aims to balance keeping a close watch on the cancer while avoiding treatments unless they are truly needed.

All leading medical groups recommend active surveillance as the preferred approach to caring for men diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer. However, until recently, the number of patients who opt for active surveillance in the U.S. has been low, ranging from under 15% in 2010 to about 40% in 2015. The specific reasons why active surveillance is underutilized in the U.S. are not well understood.

Facilitators and barriers to active surveillance What factors influence treatment decisions? To answer this question, my team and I surveyed 1,341 white and 347 Black men with newly diagnosed low-risk prostate cancer from 2014 to 2017. We recruited participants from two cancer registries in metropolitan Detroit and the state of Georgia, regions with large Black populations.

Overall, more than half of the men opted for active surveillance. This was much higher than a similar study our team conducted nearly a decade ago, which found that only 10% of men chose active surveillance.

Increased uptake of active surveillance is good news, but it is not where it needs to be. The U.S. is still lagging behind many European countries, such as Sweden, where over 80% of patients diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer select active surveillance.

To figure out what influenced patients to choose active surveillance, we decided to ask them directly.

A urologist's recommendation had the strongest effect: Nearly 85% of patients who chose active surveillance stated that their urologist recommended it. Other factors included a shared patient-physician treatment decision and greater knowledge about prostate cancer. Interestingly, participants living in metro Detroit were more likely to choose active surveillance than those living in Georgia.

Conversely, men were less likely to try active surveillance if they had a strong desire to achieve a cure, expected to live longer with treatment or perceived their diagnosis of low-risk cancer was more serious. Almost three-quarters of patients who chose immediate treatment expected to live at least five years longer than they otherwise would without treatment, which is unrealistic and not based on existing evidence.

Misperceptions, unrealistic treatment expectations and biases may lead patients to choose unnecessarily aggressive treatment, suffering its harms with no survival benefit and potentially regretting their decision later.

Racial and geographic differences

We also found racial and geographic differences in the rate of active surveillance adoption.

On average, Black patients had a higher risk of developing and dying from prostate cancer compared with white patients. Additionally, as data supporting the use of active surveillance has been predominantly based on white men, the risks and benefits of active surveillance in Black patients are more controversial. Indeed, our study found 51% of Black patients chose active surveillance compared with 61% of white patients.

Notably, Black men reported receiving fewer active surveillance recommendations from urologists and were less engaged in shared decision-making with their doctors compared with white men. This racial difference in active surveillance rates is no longer significant after accounting for urologist recommendations, decision-making style and other factors.

But geographic differences persisted

Patients living in Detroit were more likely to undergo active surveillance than those living in Georgia. This likely reflects to some degree the entrenched care patterns of some urologists. Some studies have found that the longer a urologist was in practice, the less likely they were to recommended active surveillance to their patients.

Encouraging active surveillance Our findings are encouraging in that they show active surveillance has become more acceptable to both patients and urologists over the past decade. However, our results also suggest that greater physician engagement and better patient education can support increased adoption of active surveillance.

For example, when physicians appropriately describe low-risk prostate cancer as small or not aggressive, coupled with a favorable prognosis, this can give patients a sense of relief. Patients in turn feel more comfortable with undergoing active surveillance.

Conversely, a patient's misperception of how serious their cancer is may lead to unnecessary treatment. Physicians can reassure patients that active surveillance is a safe and preferred alternative. They can also explain that aggressive treatments don't improve survival for most low-risk patients and can cause significant long-term side effects.

More shared treatment decision-making involving patients and their physicians can improve the likelihood of choosing active surveillance compared with patients who make decisions on their own.

Watch: Bumrah Fumes, Then Blows Duckett's Stumps After DRS Blunder

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah wasn't a happy man as KS Bharat's advice to skipper Rohit Sharma cost him the wicket of England batter Ben Duckett on Day 3 of the first Test at Hyderabad. Bumrah seemed to have trapped Duckett in front of the stumps, prompting a loud appeal but the umpire turned it down. The India pacer was keen for the decision to be reviewed but wicket-keeper batter KS Bharat rushed to skipper Rohit Sharma and hinted that the ball could be going down the leg side. Rohit went with Bharat's suggestion.

When the replay was brought on the giant screen and ball tracking was shown, Bumrah was quite disappointed as the trajectory suggested that the ball would've hit the leg stump. Had India gone with the review, Duckett would've been given out.'

Bumrah was quite animated on the field upon realising that he was robbed of a wicket. But, in the next over, the veteran pacer dismissed Duckett by shattering his stumps. Bumrah's celebration to that dismissal signified how much the wicket meant to him.

It isn't common for Bumrah to celebrate the dismissals of batters in the manner he did in the case of Duckett. Understanding that he might not get another opportunity to dismiss the England star soon, Bumrah was understandably charged.

Bumrah didn't have to seek anyone's help the next, sending Duckett packing clean bowled. Duckett was England's top performer in the morning session of Day 3, scoring 47 runs off 52 balls before he had to return to the dressing room.

Australian Restaurant Suffers Loss Due To Apple Maps. Here's What Happened

An Australia-based restaurant owner named Chris Pyatt has told ABC Australia that Apple Maps was showcasing his restaurant as "permanently closed" and it has cost him business. Speaking to the outlet, Mr Pyatt, who owns a Thai restaurant called Pum's Kitchen, said he isn't sure when Apple Maps started displaying the "permanently closed" label. But he claimed that it certainly cost him footfall in the restaurant and business. He mentioned that he's seen a "significant downturn" in the money it makes by about AUD 12,000 (over Rs 6 lakh).

"We have no idea when this change went through. But we have seen a sudden and drastic change in customer behaviour towards the end of November and all of December. We've noted a significant downturn, of around $12,000," Mr Pyatt told ABC Australia

It was only when a regular customer called to ask why he had shut his restaurant that Mr Pyatt found out his small business had been listed as "permanently closed" on Apple Maps. He revealed that he and his wife Pum have been running the Thai restaurant Pum's Kitchen on Queensland's Sunshine Coast for nearly a decade. However, as neither of them owns an Apple product, they did not see the Apple Maps issue until Mr Pyatt was asked by a regular customer why the restaurant had shut down.

Mr Pyatt said he spoke to an Apple customer service representative, who reportedly told him they couldn't assist with his inquiry because he's not an Apple customer. He was instead told that he had to submit feedback online, but he received an automated message once he did that.

Also read | Netflix Shifts Strategy, Ad-Free Basic Plan Discontinued in Some Countries. Check The List

Mr Pyatt did manage to update the "open" status, but it took days to get reflected in the Apple Maps app, he said. The restaurant owner also revealed that the non-closure wasn't the only problem as they also said the location of the eatery was incorrect.

"We lost one customer [this week] because they called us to check the location, then stated they were using Apple Maps and didn't turn up," Mr Pyatt said. He insisted that Apple should've checked before setting the listing for the business as closed.

"It's not right to close any online presence. If you have a particular company which is precluding you from being able to access information about yourself, or your business, that's quite a scary situation to me," he said.

"There Was Pressure...": Report Alleges Favouritism In Delhi Ranji Squad

Delhi's Ranji Trophy campaign hit a new low on Friday after team's best batter Ayush Badoni, who is going through a rough patch, was asked to stay back in team hotel at the behest of powerful officials, who wanted to teach the "IPL star" a lesson. Keeping Badoni out of 15 didn't make much of a difference to Delhi's inept batting as Uttarakhand's medium pace bowlers shot them out for 147 in a Ranji Trophy group D match in Mohali. In five completed innings so far this season, Delhi batters have failed to cross 200 on three occasions and highest individual score is Vaibhaav Kandpal's 49 in last game. On the day, it was Yash Dhull's 47 and at stumps, Uttarakhand were 98 for four with Navdeep Saini getting three wickets.

However more than mere statistic, Badoni, who scored 41 in the last game and is perhaps the only player in current Delhi stable who is rated highly on national circuit, had to be put on chopping block to accommodate Kshitiz Sharma, who is believed to be close to a former BCCI office bearer.

"Yes, there was pressure to play Kshitiz and specifically to keep Badoni out of 15, so that he doesn't even get BCCI's allotted match fees. Only 15 players are entitled to BCCI match fees. Since he can't be allowed in PMOA (Players and Match Officials Area), it was thought that it would be better off to keep him in hotel," a senior DDCA official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

But why wasn't he even brought to the ground when could have watched the proceedings from adjoining VIP gallery? "The team managers would have had to arrange for his meals separately as BCCI wouldn't have paid for it and also during breaks or match, he couldn't have attended the nets as Punjab CA have their camp on. So it was better to keep him in hotel," the official, who is close to a DDCA director said.

There is a school of thought Badoni has lost focus after two seasons of IPL and keeping him in hotel was a way of teaching him a lesson.

"If Ayush would have scored a 100, those who desperately want to see him out of Delhi cricket wouldn't have got a chance to raise their voice and push for cricketers like Kshitiz, who don't deserve to be in the dressing room.

"Even he should take blame for not scoring runs," the senior official, who sounded helpless said.

Kshitiz, who many in Delhi consider a decent club level cricketer, shouldered arms to an innocuous Abhay Negi delivery pitched on length and just cut back enough to peg back the off-stump.

However it is understood that DDCA president Rohan Jaitley would crack the whip in case things go all awry after the current game.

"Rohan's heart is in right place but it is about time he takes some tough calls. If Kshitiz doesn't score runs in the second innings, the president's intervention would be required," the official added.

More disappointing was skipper Himmat Singh's manner of dismissal as Deepak Dhapola, who bowls in mid 120 clicks, bowled him through the gate.

Dhull, who was considered an India prospect long back, has been exposed badly with serious technical problems in his stance and set-up (shoulder and head falling across off-stump).

The manner of getting out has been identical as he gets squared up to deliveries on the channel like Devendra Bora did on the day.

PM Modi Sports Rajasthani 'Bandhani' Turban At Republic Day Parade

On the occasion of India's 75th Republic Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, known for celebrating the diverse culture of the country with his sartorial choices, donned a 'Bandhani' turban this year to symbolise India's diversity.

Before the Republic Day parade, as PM Modi arrived at the National War Memorial, the first look at his outfit was revealed. Along with the distinctive turban he was seen wearing a white kurta with a brown coat and white pants.

To mark the beginning of the Republic Day programme, President Droupadi Murmu unfurled the national flag at the Kartavya Path. The flag unfurling was followed by the national anthem with a booming 21-gun salute given with the indigenous gun system 105-mm Indian Field Guns.

Four Mi-17 IV helicopters of the 105 Helicopter Unit then showered flower petals on the audience present at Kartavya Path.

This was followed by "Aavaahan", a band performance by over 100 women artists playing various types of percussion instruments, symbolising 'Nari Shakti'.

French President Emmanuel Macron is in attendance as the chief guest, joining a select group of global leaders to have graced the nation's biggest ceremonial in the last seven decades.

"Tim-Houthi Chalamet": Handsome TikToker Spreads Yemen Rebels' Message

Gazing smoulderingly into the camera as he boards a hijacked ship, a young influencer is gaining attention as he promotes a controversial cause: Yemen's Huthi rebels and their attacks in the Red Sea.

Rashed Al-Haddad, 19, has become a minor celebrity for his social media posts, some set to triumphant music and showing him brandishing the red, white and black flag of Yemen, with a large ceremonial dagger thrust into his belt.

Though not a member of the Iran-backed group, the telegenic TikToker with cherubic curls, who lives in the rebel-held capital Sanaa, has been dubbed "Tim-Huthi Chalamet" by social media users for his resemblance to "Wonka" star Timothee Chalamet.

"I received many offers to participate in fashion shows and advertisements, but I decided to take advantage of this fame for the Palestinian cause," he told AFP.

Haddad's profile has grown alongside the rise in international attention on war-torn Yemen after Huthi attacks on shipping -- launched, the group says, in protest at Israel's war against Palestinian Hamas militants in Gaza -- triggered US and British reprisal strikes.

The attacks led the United States to redesignate the Huthis a "terrorist" organisation, with ships being diverted thousands of miles around Africa and threatening to disrupt everything from car factories to natural gas deliveries.

The fresh-faced teen received millions of views for his video of a trip to the Galaxy Leader, the Israel-linked cargo ship that was captured in November and is now being paraded as a trophy of war.

He presents an alternative to the grizzled image of the Iran-backed Huthis, who seized Yemen's capital in 2014.

A Saudi-led coalition intervened the following year to prop up the internationally recognised government, plunging the country into a brutal war that has since resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths.

- 'Millions of views' -

"When I started on TikTok, I posted videos of the ship (Galaxy Leader) that was seized by the Yemenis. When I posted the video clips, they reached millions of views within four days," he told AFP in Sanaa, wearing a combat belt with a rifle slung across his lap.

"After that, the account was banned (by TikTok) and deleted permanently."

Haddad said his Instagram account with 70,000 followers was also deleted along with his Facebook profile. Both platforms, owned by Meta, ban hate speech.

In contrast to Haddad's videos, the Huthis are often seen holding mass demonstrations where weapon-toting crowds chant: "Death to Israel, death to America!"

"Three of my TikTok accounts were banned as well, but I have created new accounts, and thankfully, the number of followers is increasing," Haddad said, shrugging off comparisons with Hollywood's Chalamet.

"I did not care that (social media users) compared me to this actor, but I was happy in another way," he said.

"I was happy that I would be able to send messages to the West, because many foreigners followed me."

Haddad also insisted that despite the focus on his looks, he remained committed to his cause.

"I'm not interested in being famous because of my handsomeness, there is definitely something more important," he said.

"I'm not thinking of becoming famous because I'm handsome in order to do advertisements or to be an actor.

"The most important thing is our basic cause, Palestine, and we are all on the side of Palestine."

Ashwin-Jadeja Make History, Shatter Kumble-Harbhajan's All-Time Record

India's spin twins, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, achieved a historic milestone on Day 1 of the first Test against England in Hyderabad. Bagging the first three wickets for India on the day, Ashwin and Jadeja went past the legendary spin pair of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh in the list of most wickets for India as a pair. Ashwin and Jadeja went to a tally of 503 scalps as England went three down. Kumble and Harbhajan, on the other hand, had 501 wickets to their name in Tests for India as a pair.

Following Kumble and Harbhajan, the third pair on the list is that of Bhajji and Zaheer Khan. Between them, the spin-pace duo had bagged 474 wickets for India.

It was Ravichandran Ashwin who made the first breakthrough of the game after he dismissed Duckett in the 12th over of the match on Day 1.

The second wicket came when Ravindra Jadeja removed Ollie Pope (1 run from 11 balls) in the 15th over. Pope failed to make a mark in the game and put England in a better position.

The third wicket came soon in the 16th over after Ashwin dismissed the English opener, Crawley.

At lunch break, England was at 108/3, with Jonny Bairstow (32*) and Joe Root (18*) on the crease.

After winning the toss, the visitors decided to bat first in Hyderabad and Ben Stokes' decision did go in their favour as they crossed the 100-run mark in the 26th over.

Zak Crawley (20 runs from 40 balls) and Ben Duckett (35 runs from 39 balls) opened for England and put the visitors to a good start after they made a solid partnership of 55 runs. Crawley slammed three fours. Meanwhile, Duckett smashed seven fours.

Nawaz Sharif Supporters Bring Lion At Rally, People Click Selfies

In an unprecedented event in Pakistan, the supporters of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) brought a lion and a tiger to the Nawaz Sharif-led Lahore rally on Tuesday, The News International reported.

It reported that the animals representing the party's symbol were brought to the camps set up in the National Assembly (NA)-130 constituency to welcome former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

Scores of PML-N supporters took selfies with the lion and tiger locked in iron cages. The wild animals have been brought to multiple PML-N public gatherings in the past.

However, PML-N leader Marriyum Aurangzeb said on Nawaz's instruction, a "real lion, brought by one of its supporters for the PML-N rally, has been returned."

"Nawaz Sharif has instructed that no real lion or any other animal should be brought to any rally in Pakistan," she said in a tweet.

The News International reported that Marriyum also said the PML-N supremo took strict notice of bringing a lion to the rally on Mohini Road and was directed to send the animal back immediately, after which the lion was sent back right away.

On Tuesday evening, Nawaz led a public rally in NA-130, from where he will contest general elections slated for February 8.

PML-N Chief Organiser Maryam Nawaz also participated in the rally, which will start from Mohini Road and go to Ameer Roor Malik Park from Kale Di Puli.

The rally will go from Malik Park to Saradar Chapel Chowk, via Moola Bakhsh Chowk, Ibrahim Road, Santnagar and Isalampura.

On Wednesday, Nawaz Sharif asserted that Pakistan faced a crisis following his ouster from the prime minister's office, ARY News reported.

In a public gathering at Nankana Sahib, Sharif questioned the rationale behind imprisoning a prime minister who played a pivotal role in making Pakistan a nuclear state.

He alleged that five judges removed him from office for not accepting a salary from his son, leading to subsequent economic challenges in the country, as reported by ARY News.

Sharif pledged to bring about positive change in Nankana Sahib, outlining plans to transform the city into a model with the establishment of a boy's degree college and a state-of-the-art cricket stadium.

On Bharat Ratna For Karpoori Thakur, Credit Contest Among Bihar Leaders

The Centre's move to name former Bihar Chief Minister, the late Karpoori Thakur, for Bharat Ratna has started a race to claim credit. While Opposition leaders in Bihar have welcomed the announcement, saying their long-standing demand has been fulfilled, the BJP has accused them of selling the legendary leader's legacy for votes.

Thakur, fondly remembered as 'Jannayak' and considered a fountainhead of OBC politics, will be the 49th recipient of the country's highest civilian honour. The Bharat Ratna was last conferred on late president Pranab Mukherjee in 2019.

In the wake of the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi penned a tribute to Thakur. The Prime Minister wrote that as a person belonging to the backward classes, he has much to thank the 'Jannayak' for.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar welcomed the announcement and thanked the Prime Minister. He said it is a moment of great joy and will create a positive sentiment among backward communities. Mr Kumar also stressed that a Bharat Ratna for Karpoori Thakur was his long-standing demand.

Former Chief Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav said Thakur should have received the honour long back. "We raised this voice from the House to the streets, but the Central Government woke up when the present Bihar government of social concern conducted the caste census and increased the scope of reservation for the benefit of Bahujans. The fear is true; politics will have to focus on the concerns of Dalit Bahujan," he posted on X.

Mr Yadav's son and Bihar's Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, too, said that the Centre "had to take this decision" in the aftermath of the RJD-JDU government's caste survey and its results.

Asked about the timing of the announcement, just before the Lok Sabha election, Tejashwi Yadav said, "Whatever the timing, our demand has been fulfilled. We had been fighting for this. All socialist leaders pushed for this."

Hitting back at the Opposition leaders, Union Minister and firebrand BJP leader Giriraj Singh said Nitish Kumar and Lalu Yadav had "sold to legacy" of Karpoori Thakur to get votes.

"Nitish Kumar and Lalu Yadav played in the lap of Congress for years. Why did they not get this done? The Congress government has not honoured anyone except the Gandhi family, whether it is Sardar Patel or BR Ambedkar. (Prime Minister) Modi ji has now brought a renaissance for the Sanatan Dharma with the 'pran pratistha' at Ram Temple and respected the backward classes by honouring Karpoori Thakur," he said.

"Karpoori Thakur did not get this honour because Nitish Kumar demanded it, but because of Narendra Modi's sensitivity," he said.

Ravi Shankar Prasad, another tall BJP leader from Bihar, also thanked the Prime Minister for the honour to 'Jan Nayak'. "Several of the previous governments used to think about only the people around them. Some of them thought only about their own families. The Narendra Modi Government thinks about the entire country. Someone might be our opponent, but if he has done something for the country, he will be honoured," he told news agency ANI.

Karpoori Thakur, born in 1924, was from a backward section and joined the Independence movement at a young age. He was also imprisoned during that time. Later, he rose to become a legendary socialist leader who served as Bihar Chief Minister twice. He is remembered for his commitment to the cause of marginalised sections and his push for affirmative action. He died in 1988, during his second term as Chief Minister.

Monkey Enters Ram Temple Sanctum Sanctorum, Devotees See Hanuman Symbolism

A day after the Pran Pratishtha of Ram Lalla at Ayodhya, a nimble monkey found its way into the sanctum sanctorum on Tuesday evening.

At around 5:50 pm, the primate, seemingly unfazed by the sacred grandeur of the inner sanctum, entered through the southern gate and approached the revered Utsav idol of Lord Ram.

Security personnel stationed outside, initially alarmed by the unexpected guest, rushed towards the monkey, fearing it might cause harm to the idol, reportedly said the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple trust

Instead of causing any disruption, it gracefully traversed the sanctum before heading towards the northern gate. Finding it closed, the monkey simply turned eastward and, navigating the throngs of awe-struck devotees, exited peacefully through the eastern gate.

"Today at around 5:50 pm, a monkey entered the sanctum sanctorum through the southern gate and entered the Utsav idol. Reached near. The security personnel posted outside saw this and ran towards the monkey thinking that the monkey might drop the Utsav idol on the ground. But as soon as the policemen ran towards the monkey, the monkey ran calmly towards the northern gate. Since the gate was closed, he moved towards the east and passing through the crowd, went out through the eastern gate without causing any trouble to anyone. The security personnel say that for us it is as if Hanuman ji himself has come to see Ramlala," Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra posted in X.

Many devotees interpreted the event as a sign of Hanuman Ji's continued guardianship over Lord Ram and his blessings upon the newly established temple.

The Pran Pratishtha of Ram Lalla at Ram Temple in Ayodhya was held on Monday. The Ram Lalla idol was unveiled at the Pran Pratishtha ceremony after the hour-long rituals in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who led the ceremony.

Former US Teacher Pleads Guilty Of Having Sex With Student 30 Times

A woman who used to work as a teacher in Arkansas, in the United States, has pleaded guilty to having sex with a high school boy up to 30 times. Thirty-three-year-old Heather Hare, now married, could face life sentence after found guilty of transporting a minor across state lines for unlawful sexual activity, as per a New York Post report. Ms Hare first made headlines in 2020 when her students bid her goodbye on a television programme after her online class was discontinued during the pandemic.

She was arrested in April 2023 when a 17-year-old student came forward to report her repeated abuse.

The student, identified as JR, told the police that he met Ms Hare on the first day of his senior year at Bryant High School in 2021.

"Hare began one-on-one counseling sessions with the minor victim, eventually giving him her personal phone number and primarily communicating with him through Instagram and Snapchat. At one point, Ms. Hare told J.R. that she had a dream of them having sex," the Post quoted Assistant US Attorney John Ray White as telling the court.

"The minor victim and Hare had sex approximately 20 to 30 times throughout the 2021-2022 school term, including multiple times at her Conway residence, in her vehicle, and in her classroom and parking lots at Bryant High School," the prosecutor further said.

One of the sexual encounters took place during a school trip in 2022. "J.R. advised they planned to have sex on the trip and not have to worry about being caught. Hare did come to his hotel room and the two engaged in sex," said Mr White.

The former teacher broke down in court when asked if the account was accurate.

"Yes, sir," she replied, sobbing softly before confirming she pleaded "guilty".

She also made a plea deal seeking 13 years in prison. But, the judge has not revealed whether he has accepted the deal, the Post report said. This opens the possibility of a life sentence.

Sharad Pawar's Nephew, Rohit, Appears Before Probe Agency In Bank Scam Case

NCP lawmaker Rohit Pawar, grand-nephew of party boss Sharad Pawar, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate Wednesday morning in connection with a money-laundering probe linked to the alleged Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank, or MSCB, scam

In a show of strength, Mr Pawar was escorted to the central agency's office in south Mumbai's Ballard Estate by senior members of the Nationalist Congress Party, including Working President Supriya Sule.

Before appearing at the ED office Rohit Pawar also visited his grand-uncle at the party HQ, a few hundred metres away, and sought his blessing; a video shared by news agency ANI showed Pawar junior, in a light blue shirt and khaki trousers, touching Sharad Pawar's feet. As he was going into the ED office Rohit Pawar, a first-time MLA from Karjat Jamkhed, said, "The officers are doing their job. Whatever documents they wanted, we have given. I will appear and whatever information they ask, I will give them."

Speaking to reporters outside the ED office, after Pawar junior went inside, a confident Ms Sule said, "We are going to completely cooperate with all the agencies because we have nothing to hide."

Ms Sule, however, also responded strongly to questions about claims by opposition parties that the ruling BJP uses central agencies like the ED, to target and harass rivals, particularly before elections.

"I cannot comment on it, I am going on data and it speaks for itself. In Parliament there was a reply given by the Government of India... that 95 per cent of cases by Income Tax Department, CBI, and ED are against people in opposition parties. I am not making this allegation... I have very little to comment."

Specifically, Ms Sule had been asked about reports Ajit Pawar - who is Sharad Pawar's nephew and was a close aide till he rebelled - has been dropped from a new ED chargesheet in the MSCB case.

Ajit Pawar led a breakaway faction of the NCP in July last year, and was made a Deputy Chief Minister in a state government led by the BJP and a rebel unit of the Shiv Sena.

The Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank scam relates to the alleged fraudulent disbursal of loans amounting to Rs 25,000 crore. The investigation was led by Mumbai Police's Economic Offences Wing under a FIR registered in August 2019. A petition before the Bombay High Court alleged some sugar mills had defaulted on these loans and, on default, were auctioned to office-bearers and politicians.

The initial case was closed in 2020 but the ED filed an intervention petition and began its inquiry.

US Man Fatally Shoots Wife And 3 Adult Daughters Inside Chicago Home

A man in the United States has been accused of fatally shooting his wife and three adult daughters in a small community outside Chicago on Sunday. According to ABC 7, Tinley Park police arrived at the scene after the man inside the home called 911 to report a mass slaughter. They found four women fatally wounded and described the incident as a "domestic-related shooting". The man, whose identity hasn't been revealed, was taken into custody and officials also recovered a firearm at the scene.

Tinley Park officials called the shootings "an act of senseless domestic violence". According to the outlet, they said that when they arrived on the scene, the suspect was found uninjured inside the home with a gun.

The Cook County Medical Examiner identified the victims as Majeda Kassem, 53, and her three daughters, 25-year-old twins, Halema and Zahia, and 24-year-old Hanan Kassem. Officials said that the incident was domestic in nature and did not present any harm to the general public.

"A male subject said his wife was shot. The line disconnected. He wasn't really cooperative," a 911 dispatcher said. They also called the scene a "massacre" when requesting more units.

According to the New York Post, a neighbour who knew the family said that the news of the grisly crime was "shocking" to wake up to Sunday morning, given that the victims and alleged killer were "such a good family that had a bright future". "My daughter knows them," the neighbour said. "She went to school with the oldest son, and she employed the twin sisters. She always talked about how they were all very intelligent, and they had very high goals in life," they added.

Tinley Park said it hasn't had a crime like this since the murders of five women at a Lane Bryant store in 2008. "It's a tragedy," Village Manager Pat Carr said. "Not only for the family, but all the surrounding neighbors that are there," he added.

Mr Carr also stressed that there was no threat to the public. "This was isolated to the home. The scene is secure. There is only one suspect at this time," he said.

H&M Accused Of Sexualising Children In New Ad: All You Need To Know

After being accused of sexualising young children in an advertisement, fashion giant H&M has issued an apology and withdrawn the controversial campaign in Australia.

As per reports, the advertisement by H&M featured two girls of primary school age.

In the advertisement, going viral on the internet, the two girls can be seen wearing grey-hued pinafore dresses. The slogan attached to the advertisement read, “Make those heads turn in H&M's Back to School fashion.”

Australian author Melinda Tankard Reist was among the first ones to criticise the tagline saying that no schoolgirl would want to “turn heads” with their appearance. Sharing the screenshot of the now-deleted advertisement on X (formerly Twitter), Ms Melinda wrote, “H&M what is your intention with this sponsored Facebook ad? Little schoolgirls generally don't want to “turn heads”. The large numbers I engage with in schools want to be left alone to learn and have fun and not draw unwanted attention to their appearance.”

In a thread, she added, “The little girl's parents generally prefer heads don't ‘turn' when others see their daughters walking to school, on a bus or in class. Why would you want to fuel the idea that little girls should draw attention to their looks, bodies and ‘style'?”

Ms Reist continued, “Perhaps have a word to your marketing team and come up with something that doesn't draw attention to pre-pubescent girls already struggling to thrive in a culture that values ‘lookism' as an aspirational goal?”

The Australian author wasn't alone, several other users also reacted strongly against the advertisement. Soon after the social media uproar H&M withdrew the ad and apologised. The retailer was quoted as saying, “We have removed this ad. We are deeply sorry for the offence this has caused and will look into how we present campaigns going forward.”

In a separate incident in 2023, Chinese-owned online marketplace Temu also came under fire similarly after it had launched an advertisement that allegedly sexualised young children.

The advertisement featured a girl aged between eight to ten wearing a bikini and posing in a manner that was deemed  "quite adult for a girl of her age" by the Advertising Standards Authority.

How Rishi Sunak's Clampdown Impacts Hospitality Workers, Including Indians

Since Brexit made it harder for Europeans to work in the UK, British pubs and restaurants have come to rely on labor from further-flung parts of the world. Now, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's planned crackdown on migration is threatening to stifle that supply.

Arrivals to the UK from countries such as Nigeria, India and China have risen sharply, more than offsetting the number of departing EU citizens, and pushing overall levels of net migration to an all-time high.

"As there are less Europeans, we are seeing more rest of the world people come in," said Alasdair Murdoch, chief executive officer of Burger King in the UK. "A lot of Europeans went home during Covid and they didn't come back."

Record migration, despite the supply-side benefits, has triggered a political storm after pro-Brexit campaigners promised to control the country's borders. Sunak is gambling on the Conservatives' controversial plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, while stamping down on economic migration with new limits on students and the families of people who are granted work visas. Yet these are the groups who often fill hospitality jobs, as it is difficult to get a visa to work in a bar or eatery.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

"We tend to employ more people doing fewer hours," added Burger King boss Murdoch, due to higher labor costs. He explained that many of his staff from outside Europe are students and so are well-suited to these jobs.. "There will be a shift to more part-time workers."

The hospitality sector has already endured one of its toughest ever periods due to the pandemic and a generational inflation crisis. Relentless train strikes and the lasting trend of remote working have also kept customers away from city and town centers, while bosses are now facing higher taxes and another sharp uplift in the minimum wage. A restriction on labor would add to the pain.

More than 103,000 EU workers left the UK's accommodation and food services sector between December 2019 - shortly before Brexit ended freedom of movement from the EU - and December 2022, according to net payroll data from HM Revenue & Customs. Over the same period, the number of other overseas staff grew by 96,900.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Proposed changes to the migration system "will reduce the pool of migrant labor that businesses can hire," said Ben Brindle, a researcher at the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford. In early December, Sunak vowed to increase the minimum salary needed to secure a skilled work visa by a third, to 38,700 pounds ($49,000) - well above the average pay of most hospitality workers.

"Migration isn't the only way to fill vacancies, so what happens will depend on how businesses respond," Brindle added. "In theory they could improve pay to attract domestic workers or automate production, but in some cases these options won't be feasible."

Inflation

Many business owners are concerned that British people won't apply for these types of jobs, if the supply of overseas workers is limited. Fears spread down the chain to suppliers of restaurants and pubs. "For plants in the middle of nowhere, in places where they just can't recruit, they're going to have a very difficult time," said Nick Allen, chief executive of the British Meat Processors Association.

"They're faced with the decision: you incur huge extra cost or actually you tailor your business down, to fit the workers that you can get hold of. It could have some quite dramatic effects, and what the government should understand is whichever way that goes is going to create inflation."

This spells a headache for Sunak, who has said a general election is likely in late 2024 but is far behind the opposition Labour Party in polls. Inflation is still double the 2% target, and Bank of England policymakers are worried that a tight labor market and rising wages are boosting domestic prices. Limiting the labor supply could be risky.

Allen, whose industry has been hit particularly hard by a lack of UK workers, said it was unrealistic to assume businesses could pay British people more. Due to the specialist skills required, many meat processing plants have been able to recruit workers from abroad under the UK's "skilled worker" program. The Philippines has proved to be a "good hunting ground for us," he said.

But this is expensive. Allen reckons the cost of recruiting and hiring Filipino workers - paying for their visas, travel and so on - averages out to 5,000 pounds per year over the length of their employment. That's over the domestic rate of pay.

"You just would not be doing it if it was just a simple matter of offering higher wages - you just cannot find the people to do the work," Allen said. The new minimum salary for migrant workers of 38,700 pounds is far higher than the going rate, Allen added, leaving many executives in the meat industry scratching their heads.

Food and Drink

The problem will be felt across other areas of the food industry. In December 2020, 67% of staff at one large casual dining chain were British, 16% were from the EU and 11% were from the rest of the world (the remainder were unspecified). By December 2022, the rest-of-world proportion had risen to 19%, while the EU share had dipped to 9%.

Ian Cass, managing director of the Forum of British Pubs, said there were fewer EU staff employed in bars across the UK since Brexit, and their departure was being felt most keenly in kitchens.

Britons haven't been rushing in to fill the gaps, he added. Although demand for staff is high, it varies greatly by locality and changing drinking habits mean many pubs are closing earlier than in the past. "You probably need workers on less hours, and they're making less money," Cass said. "So that also has proven a difficulty to getting people into the hospitality industry."

Most pubs, he added, could not afford to pay staff more. Cass called for immigration restrictions to be loosened on catering staff looking to work in the UK, if only during busy periods over the summer. "They ain't going to be making a 30-pounds-odd-grand salary," he said.

The hospitality industry "has been working hard to make itself a more attractive one for people to join, with salaries up 13% on average in the last year," said Kate Nicholls, chief executive of trade body UKHospitality.

Population Growth

In a recent lecture hosted by conservative think-tank Bright Blue, Alan Manning, professor of economics at the London School of Economics, said it was right to reduce net migration. Current levels had put the UK's population growth on an unsustainable trajectory, he said.

Businesses hiring workers who were in shortage should be encouraged to increase salaries, he added, rather than being allowed to import staff on lower wages - though he said the salary threshold for migrants of 38,700 pounds was too high.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

"We need to ask more often than we do why we have shortages," Manning said. "Almost always, when we get into the lower-paid, lower-skilled jobs, the reason for shortages is not that we're short of people who are able to do these jobs. We're short of people in the local economy who want to do these jobs. That's because of poor pay and conditions."

The sentiment is not always shared by business leaders. "What the government doesn't take into account is, once you bring people in at that 38,700 pounds rate, everyone around them will want and expect to be paid the same amount," Allen said. "The government seems to announce these things and quite frankly, it feels like they're making it up as they go along."

This Popular Children's Story "Frightened" UK's Queen Camilla As A Child

Britain's Queen Camilla recently revealed a popular children's story "frightened" her as a young child. Speaking on her new podcast, The Queen's Reading Room, the 76-year-old said that she was never a fan of the author Lewis Carroll because 'Alice in Wonderland' scared her when she was little. She admitted it was some of the characters that "frightened" her. She also said that she was fearful of Alice going down the rabbit hole.

Queen Camilla was quizzed on whether she preferred Lewis Carroll or Hans Christian Anderson - the author of The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling. She said, "It's an awful thing to admit, but I've never really liked Lewis Carroll".

"I was rather put off by Alice going down that rabbit hole. It always really frightened me as a child. All the Mad Hatters and Red Queens and... it just wasn't my favourite," she added.

However, according to the Telegraph, the 76-year-old does not appear to have let her own views of Lewis Carroll shape those of others. 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' is one of the many books featured on her Reading Room website, recommended by authors William Boyd, Elif Shafak and Susan Hill.

Moreover, the actor Richard E Grant read Mr Carroll's 'All in the Golden Afternoon', the preface poem to 'Alice in Wonderland', at the inaugural Queen's Reading Room Literary Festival at Hampton Court Palace in June. According to the outlet, at a poetry recital attended by the Queen at a primary school in west London last August, two students performed Mr Carroll's Jabberwocky, dressed as the Mad Hatter and Alice.

Meanwhile, according to the Queen's Reading Room website, the podcast aims to promote the power and benefits of reading and is on a mission to help more people find and connect with books which enrich their lives. It was launched in 2021 during the Covid pandemic.

"As a charity, we produce accessible, free educational content around literature 365 days a year through our social channels and website; as well as literary festivals and events; research and campaigns," the website reads.

Chinese Scientist Filed Covid Sequence Weeks Before Official Release: Report

A Chinese scientist sought to publish the genetic profile of the coronavirus two weeks before Beijing formally released the sequence, as per federal documents shared with a US congressional committee and released on Wednesday, The Washington Post reported.

The delay may have slowed researchers' work on tests, treatments, and vaccines to combat the virus.

As per The Washington Post, the report raises new questions about how Chinese officials and scientists shared information in the earliest days of the pandemic as the virus quickly spread through their country, although experts cautioned that it does not offer substantive insight into the pandemic's origins.

On December 28, 2019, a virologist at the Institute of Pathogen Biology of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing, submitted a genetic sequence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus to GenBank, a publicly accessible database of genetic sequences overseen by the US National Institutes of Health.

GenBank's review process flagged the submission three days later, alerting Ren in an email that her submission was incomplete and requesting that she provide additional annotations. Ren's submission was deleted from GenBank's processing queue on January 16, 2020, after Ren did not resubmit the information with the requested annotations.

A separate team of Chinese researchers submitted a "nearly identical" genetic sequence of SARS-CoV-2 to GenBank that was published on January 12, 2020. That was according to a letter that Melanie Anne Egorin, a senior official at the Department of Health and Human Services, sent to House Energy and Commerce Committee leaders and that was made public Wednesday.

Ren did not immediately respond to an email Wednesday requesting comment. Her submission and emailed replies from GenBank were released by congressional Republicans who have been investigating the origins of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to public health experts who reviewed the documents, the episode illustrated a missed opportunity to learn more about the virus at the beginning of the global health emergency.

The failure to publish the genetic sequence submitted by Ren is "retroactively painful," said Jesse Bloom, a virologist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle. Bloom noted that researchers were depending on genetic sequences to begin developing medical interventions to combat the coronavirus and argued that earlier access to the information would have expedited new tests and vaccines.

"That two weeks would have made a tangible difference in quite a few people's lives," Bloom said, as per The Washington Post.

The genetic sequence of SARS-CoV-2 that Ren tried to publish in December 2019 -- days before Bloom and other experts said they started closely tracking the outbreak of a novel respiratory virus in China -- was never publicly accessible for the researchers and laboratory staff who browse GenBank, which federal officials said contains more than 3.8 billion published records.

The Wall Street Journal first reported on Ren's submission to GenBank.

In a statement, House Energy and Commerce Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), health subcommittee chair Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.) and oversight subcommittee chair Morgan Griffith (R-Va.) said the finding raises further questions about whether Chinese officials have been forthcoming about the virus.

Watch: Kohlis Strong Reaction As Rohit, Nabi Argue Over 'Sportsmanship'

India captain Rohit Sharma was involved in an intense chat with Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi during the first Super Over of the 3rd T20I in Bengaluru on Wednesday. A throw from India wicket-keeper Sanju Samson hit Nabi's pad from behind and resulted in a big deflection, with Afghanistan deciding to make the most of the opportunity by running two extra runs. Rohit, fuming at the ‘unsportsmanlike' decision, argued with both Nabi and the umpire about the unfair advantage that the visiting team got. But, the runs continued to be counted.

Nabi, on his part, seemed to have put forth the point that he didn't deliberately come in the line of the throw, and hence, he had the right to make the opportunity count.

Here's the video:

Even Virat Kohli, who stopped the ball after the deflection, pointed at legs, signalling that Nabi shouldn't have taken the additional double as the ball had hit him.

Former India cricketer, Aakash Chopra suggested that the Men in Blue wasn't right in arguing for that game of play in which the player ran two extra runs.

"A bye was taken off the last ball. Sanju Samson threw the ball, it hit Nabi's leg and they ran two extra runs. One was available and India gave one because they were complaining about the spirit of the game. India were wrong in complaining. You could have restricted them to two runs and you conceded a third just like that," he said on his YouTube channel.

The cricketer-turned-commentator further gave an example of a World Cup final to explain his statement.

"My question is, assuming had it been the last ball of a World Cup final and the extra run you were getting after the ball hit the pads was deciding the match, would anyone not run there? Would anyone be ready to lose the World Cup by not taking that run because it is ethically incorrect? Everyone would have run," the former India opener explained.

The extra double didn't cost the Indian team much as Rohit Sharma's men won the contest in the second Super Over after the first one was tied.

Barack Obama's Sweet Message On "Better Half" Michelle Obama's Birthday

Barack Obama marked wife Michelle Obama's 60th birthday with a heartfelt tribute to her. The former US president, 62, posted a photo of his “better half” looking radiant in a yellow dress in the sunlight with the ocean as a backdrop.

In his caption, Mr Obama wrote, "This is what 60 looks like. Happy birthday to my better half — who happens to be one of the funniest, smartest, most beautiful people I know. @MichelleObama, you make every day better. I can't wait to see what this new decade brings you.”

Barack Obama and Michelle Obama met in the late 1980s while they were both working at the law firm Sidley Austin in Chicago. Mr Obama was a summer associate, and Michelle Obama, whose maiden name is Michelle Robinson, was assigned to be his adviser. They eventually started dating while working together.

The couple got married on October 3, 1992, at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. They have two daughters together, Malia and Sasha. The Obamas' marriage has been well-documented, and they have often spoken publicly about their relationship and the challenges they faced, as well as their enduring love and support for each other.

Last year, Barack and Michelle Obama celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary with sweet messages on social media. Mr Obama shared a rare photo of them together, calling his wife “brilliant, kind, funny, and beautiful.”

Michelle Obama also posted a picture of her and Mr Obama smiling with the city skyline behind them. “31 years, and a lifetime to go. I love going through life with you by my side, @BarackObama. Happy anniversary, honey!” she wrote.

Earlier, Michelle Obama opened up about her decades-long relationship with her husband acknowledging that, like any couple, they have had their share of ups and downs. "People often reach out to me seeking relationship advice," she wrote in her book ‘The Light We Carry'. "They remark on photographs they've seen of me and Barack together - laughing, or sharing a look, appearing content to be side by side. They ask how we have managed to stay both married and unmiserable for 30 years now. I want to say, 'Yes, truly, it's a surprise to us, too, sometimes!' And really, I'm not joking," she added. "We have our issues, of course, but I love the man, and he loves me now, still and seemingly forever. Our love is not perfect, but it's real and we're committed to it,” she said.

False 911 Call Of Fire At White House Triggers Emergency Response

A person in the US called the emergency number 911 falsely claiming that there was a fire at the White House and that someone was trapped inside. According to NBC News, units from Washington's Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department responded to the call just after 7am (local time) on Monday, but determined that it was a false alarm. The outlet quoted Noah Gray, the communications director for the emergency services, as saying that no law enforcement team was dispatched.

He also called it a "swatting" incident, where someone makes a false report of a crime in progress to attract the police's attention.

The police are trying to find out where the call was made from. Meanwhile, President Joe Bide at Camp David in Maryland when the 911 call was made, as per NBC News.

The White House declined to comment and referred the question to Secret Service, which has not yet issued any statement, as per New York Post.

This is a fresh incident of "swatting". In the past, high-profile officials, including lawyers, judges and lawmakers, such as Marjorie Taylor Greene, also faced such calls.

In 2016 and 2017, about 2,000 fake calls, including those warning of bomb threats, were received by Jewish institutions, giving the perception of growing antisemitism, which many critics blamed on former US president Donald Trump.

A teenager was convicted in 2018 for making such calls. "I did it out of boredom. It was like a game," the teen had said claiming he earned $240,000 in Bitcoin in the process.
