As ChatGPT Turns 1, OpenAI Posts A Special Message

ChatGPT has completed 1 year of existence and it has been surely a roller coaster, filled with technological advancements, unexpected challenges and some boardroom drama. Sam Altman returned to lead OpenAI as CEO after he was ousted about 10 days ago.

OpenAI also got a new initial board, Mira Murati will continue as CTO, and Greg Brockman to return as President. Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D'Angelo are also part of the initial board.

Soon after his return, Mr Altman sent a message to company employees. In a blog post, he thanked his fellow OpenAI employees and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella for having their backs and to "welcome all of us if we couldn't achieve our primary goal."

He also shared that Microsoft will be included in the new board as a non-voting observer.

"I have never been more excited about the future. I am extremely grateful for everyone's hard work in an unclear and unprecedented situation, and I believe our resilience and spirit set us apart in the industry. I feel so, so good about our probability of success for achieving our mission," Mr Altman wrote.

"I love and respect Ilya, I think he's a guiding light of the field and a gem of a human being. I harbour zero ill will towards him. While Ilya will no longer serve on the board, we hope to continue our working relationship. We are discussing how he can continue his work at OpenAI," Mr Atlam referred to AI scientist Ilya Sutskever.

He went on to appreciate other employees, "I am grateful to Adam, Tasha, and Helen for working with us to come to this solution that best serves the mission. I'm excited to continue to work with Adam and am sincerely thankful to Helen and Tasha for investing a huge amount of effort in this process."

"To all of you, our team: I am sure books are going to be written about this time period, and I hope the first thing they say is how amazing the entire team has been. Now that we're through all of this, we haven't lost a single employee. You stood firm for each other, this company, and our mission. One of the most important things for the team that builds AGI safely is the ability to handle stressful and uncertain situations and maintain good judgment throughout. Top marks. Thank you all," Mr Atlman wrote in his blog post.

Altman, who was fired by OpenAI's board earlier following disagreements on how fast to develop and monetise artificial intelligence, had been in negotiations with the company to return. Those talks reached an impasse on Sunday in part over pressure from Altman and others for existing board members to resign. Instead, the board named a new leader — former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear — and OpenAI's biggest backer, Microsoft, said it would hire Altman to head up a new in-house AI team.

Henry Kissinger Advocated Strong Ties With India Under PM Modi

Henry Kissinger, known for his disdain for India's leadership in the 1970s under Indira Gandhi, has died at the age of 100, but the well-known American statesman and former secretary of state had been advocating stronger US-India ties for the last one decade under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Considered the architect of the US-China relationship since the early 70s, Kissinger died at his home in Connecticut today. His consulting firm, Kissinger Associates, did not provide a cause of his death.

After Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of India in 2014, Kissinger, also the former US National Security Adviser, has been advocating strong ties with India. In fact, many say, over the past few years he has become a great fan of Prime Minister Modi.

When PM Modi was in the US on an Official State Visit in June this year, Kissinger despite not keeping good health, travelled to Washington to listen to Narendra Modi's address at the luncheon at the State Department jointly hosted by Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Henry Kissinger was brought in a wheelchair to the historic Benjamin Franklin Room on the seventh floor of the Foggy Bottom headquarters of the State Department. He was greeted at the elevator by US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti.

During the luncheon, the elderly American statesman, whose influence on American national security and foreign policy is seen as immense, patiently listened to the speech of the prime minister and had an interaction with him.

In recent years, Kissinger made his views known to the public on India when he made a fireside appearance in June 2018 along with John Chambers of the US India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF) on the occasion of the organisation's first anniversary. The fireside chat was closed to the press, but those who attended it recollect how strongly he batted for the India-US relationship.

"When I think about India, I admire their strategy," Kissinger said during a rare appearance in Washington to attend the first annual leadership summit of the USISPF in June 2018.

His ties with India in the 1970s when he was in the administration both as the National Security Advisor and Secretary of State had soured, but before he turned to China, his first preference was India.

It was at his advice that the US Chambers of Commerce in the 70s established the US India Business Council (USIBC).

As per archival diplomatic conversations, as early as 1972 he had advocated for India and Japan to be the permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Historians say that both Kissinger and then-President Richard Nixon could not have a healthy relationship with the then-Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and they turned their attention to China. Rest is history, many say.

After the end of the Cold War, and the emergence of India as a strong power in the last 10 decades, his views on India had changed and for successive administrations, Kissinger has been advocating strong ties with India. Prime Minister Modi has had a few meetings with him during his trip to the United States.

Speaking at another USISPF event, Kissinger, then 96, said the Bangladesh crisis pushed the two countries to the "edge of confrontations''.

"India was at the beginning of a historic evolution and not all of the problems that concerned were of equal importance to India. India was heavily involved with its own evolution and the policy of neutrality," he then said in New Delhi.

"If you look at the world, there are upheavals in almost every part of the world and you cannot necessarily develop a general concept for each of them but you can work together on the essentials of peace and progress. Then I would say no two countries now are better situated to evolve their friendship," Kissinger said.

A day after Dhaka was liberated on December 16, 1971, then President Nixon was told by Kissinger that he had "saved West Pakistan," according to confidential papers since declassified by the US State Department.

Kissinger told then-President Gerald Ford after his meeting with Indira Gandhi in October 1974, a few months after India's first nuclear test, that she had felt an "almost pathological need" to criticise the US but at the same time desired an improvement in Indo-US relations on a "more equal" basis after Washington recognised India as an "important country in the world".

He once acknowledged that the then United States Republican administration had always wished it had a man as 'strong' as Gandhi, but in the same breath, Kissinger said Gandhi did not have a personality that appealed at 'first blush' to Americans.

On a visit to Afghanistan and in a meeting with Mohammad Daoud, the Head of State and Prime Minister, Kissinger shared a number of views including those on India, non-alignment and the personality of Gandhi.

"I think it's correct to say Mrs. Gandhi does not have a personality that appeals at first blush to Americans. Maybe not even at a second blush. There have even been cases of people who have resisted her a third time," Kissinger added when asked by Daoud to characterise relations between India and the United States.

"Our relations with India are friendly and aloof. It's a fortunate thing the Indians are pacifists, otherwise, their neighbours would be worried. The first time we were in India, they told me that Kabul belonged to India too," Kissinger has been recorded as having said according to a White House Memo.

Kissinger received a Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 for helping arrange the end of US military involvement in the disastrous Vietnam War. He is also credited with secret diplomacy that helped President Nixon open communist China to the United States and the West, highlighted by Nixon's visit to Beijing in 1972.

"Helps To Live Long Enough..." Shashi Tharoor On Henry Kissinger's Death

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor described the death of Henry Kissinger, former US Secretary of State who played a key role in shaping diplomacy in the post-World War II world, as the "end of, by any definition, an extraordinary life".

Sharing a BBC report on the diplomat's death, Mr Tharoor said he was both a "pivotal and polarising" figure and added that it "helps to live long enough so people don't remember your earlier statements and actions!"

Kissinger died at his home in Connecticut yesterday. He was 100.

In his post on X, Mr Tharoor said, "The end of, by any definition, an extraordinary life. Henry Kissinger was indeed both a pivotal and a polarising figure, as this @BBC obituary states."

"For a few years in New York, I knew him well enough to be on first-name terms with him. I was still amazed how "Henry", the architect of the US tilt towards Pakistan in 1971, could morph with such insouciance into the most prominent advocate of closer US-India relations three decades later. It helps to live long enough so people don't remember your earlier statements and actions!," the Congress MP added.

Kissinger, regarded as a giant in statecraft and realpolitik, is often criticised for his disregard towards human rights abuses when they did not reconcile to diplomatic goals. A case in point is the 1971 India-Pakistan war that led to the creation of Bangladesh.

The then Richard Nixon-led US administration, with Kissinger as Secretary of State, had turned a blind eye to Islamabad's atrocities in East Pakistan, because Pakistan was a channel for a US outreach to China. This outreach was aimed at countering Soviet influence in south Asia. India's stand infuriated Nixon and his heated exchanges with Kissinger drew strong criticism after they were declassified.

The remarks included verbal abuses against then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Indians. In the declassified tapes, Nixon is heard referring to Mrs Gandhi as "old witch". Kissinger called her "b***h" and said Indians are "bastards". When the remarks became public, Kissinger had apologised and said the remarks were made in the context of the Cold War and said he respected Mrs Gandhi.

These 2 Cities Are Most Expensive In The World This Year. New York Is 3rd

Singapore and Zurich tied for the world's most expensive city this year, followed by Geneva, New York and Hong Kong, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) said on Thursday as it cautioned that the global cost-of-living crisis was not yet over.

On average, prices have risen by 7.4% year on year in local currency terms for over 200 commonly used goods and services, a drop from the record 8.1% increase last year but still "significantly higher than the trend in 2017-2021," it said in a report.

Singapore regained the top of the rankings for the ninth time in the past eleven years due to high price levels across several categories.

The city state has the world's highest transport prices, owing to strict government controls on car numbers. It is also amongst the most expensive for clothing, groceries and alcohol.

Zurich's rise reflected the strength of the Swiss franc and high prices for groceries, household goods and recreation, it said.

Geneva and New York tied for third place, while Hong Kong was fifth and Los Angeles in sixth.

Asia continues to see relatively lower price increases on average compared to other regions, it said.

Chinese cities have fallen in its rankings with four cities - Nanjing, Wuxi, Dalian and Beijing - among the biggest movers down the rankings this year along with Osaka and Tokyo in Japan.

Gigi Hadid Apologises For "Not Fact-Checking" Instagram Post On Israel

Palestinian-American supermodel Gigi Hadid has apologised for "not fact-checking" her Instagram post about the Israel-Hamas war. The 28-year-old model of Palestinian descent faced outrage on social media after she accused the Israeli state of a number of crimes against Palestinian children before Hamas attacked Israel on October 7.

In a recent Instagram post, Ms Hadid clarified her intentions and apologised for using the wrong example. She explained that she was trying to highlight how Palestinian children who were arrested by the IDF are often not given the same rights as an Israeli child accused of the same crime. In her post, she argued that children, whether Israeli or Palestinian, deserve equal human rights.

"As someone of Palestinian descent, the endless heartbreaking news and imagery coming out of Gaza has been painful and often overwhelming. It is important to me to share real stories about the hardships that Palestinians have endured and continue to endure, but this weekend I shared something that I did not fact-check or deeply think about prior to reposting," she wrote.

"My focus was intended to be on human rights issues. That is why I also want to reiterate that attacking any human, which of course includes Jewish people, is NEVER OK. Taking innocent people hostage is NEVER OK. Harming someone BECAUSE they are Jewish is NEVER OK. It is wrong," Ms Hadid wrote in her length 2-page post.

She further claimed that there have been some legitimate human rights violations by the Israeli government.

"It is well documented, by credible human rights organizations, that there has been systemic mistreatment of the Palestinian people by the government of Israel. I know these historical issues well because they are the history of my own family, Palestinians who were forced to flee their homeland in the late 1940s," she wrote. "At the same time, I understand that with the power of my platform comes a huge responsibility. I'm human and I make mistakes. But I also hold myself accountable for those mistakes."

See the post:

"At the same time, I understand that with the power of my platform comes a huge responsibility. I'm human and I make mistakes. But I also hold myself accountable for those mistakes," she added.

Ms Hadid also said that she does not stand behind the "spreading of misinformation, and have always condemned using the Free Palestine movement as justification for anti-Semitism. I owe it to myself and my followers to gather my thoughts and share them in a more constructive way as I pursue my goal of bringing attention to violations of international law and human rights."

OpenAI Not Likely To Offer Seat To Microsoft On New Board: Report

ChatGPT owner OpenAI is not expected to offer Microsoft and other investors including Khosla Ventures and Thrive Capital seats on its new board, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Tuesday.

In a few tumultuous days last week, OpenAI ousted its CEO and founder Sam Altman without any detailed cause, setting off alarm bells among investors and employees. He was reinstated with the promise of a new board.

Altman's exit sparked confusion about the future of the startup at the center of an artificial intelligence boom.

"I do not know that it's going to be the choice of OpenAI to leave Microsoft off the board," said Thomas Hayes chairman of hedge fund Great Hill Capital.

"Microsoft will have something to say about it, given the amount of money that they have put behind them," he said, adding that it would not be in the interest of Microsoft "to sit passively".

The Information first reported the news and said OpenAI will have a nine-person board.

The three initial directors of the new board - Chair Bret Taylor, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, and Quora CEO Adam D'Angelo - are expected to be confirmed as soon as this week, the report said.

D'Angelo would be the only remaining director from the old six-person board that fired Altman.

Microsoft, which has invested more than $10 billion in OpenAI, is one of the biggest backers of OpenAI that operates ChatGPT, its viral generative AI chatbot.

Its CEO Satya Nadella had earlier told CNBC the governance at the ChatGPT maker needed to change no matter where Altman ended up.

In response to a question on the OpenAI board, a Microsoft spokesperson said, "We will wait until the board officially says something."

OpenAI and Thrive did not immediately respond to requests for comment, while Khosla declined to comment.

On Camera, US Man Causes Panic After Climbing Out On Parked Plane's Wing

A man on a Southwest Airlines Flight was arrested on Sunday in New Orleans, US, after he allegedly jumped out of an emergency hatch, climbed out into the plane's wing and attempted to run away as the aircraft was preparing to take off. According to CNN, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office (JPSO) said that the 38-year-old man, whose identity hasn't been revealed, was arrested after he escaped from the emergency hatch and ran out onto the tarmac at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

A video going viral on social media showed passengers evacuating the plane and rushing through the jetway. Separately, photos shared by the New Orleans TV station showed the emergency hatch dropping down as well as the moment the man was escorted away in handcuffs by police.

Take a look at the video below:

At the time of the incident, the plane was parked at the terminal and had yet to push back from the gate for takeoff.

According to the New York Post, a passenger who witnessed the whole incident said that the 38-year-old had been walking on the airplane's wing before jumping down and running across the tarmac. He also tried to steal a service truck on the tarmac before being stopped by authorities, the witness added.

When deputies made contact with the man on the tarmac, he appeared "incoherent and not fully aware of his surroundings," the sheriff's office stated. He was "transported to a local hospital for evaluation as the deputies believed he was suffering from a mental health emergency," officials said, adding that he remains hospitalised for now.

"There is no indication that the man left anything on the plane, nor was he found in possession of any weapons of any type. He is not expected to face any criminal charges locally, however the investigation has been referred to federal authorities. No one was injured during the incident," the statement continued, as per CNN

After a delay, the flight departed using a different aircraft, the outlet reported. The witness, on the other hand, said that the delay was about two hours and the flight arrived in Atlanta shortly before midnight.

"Children Are Addicted": Australia To Ban Disposable Vapes Imports

Australia will ban imports of disposable vapes from January 1, the government said Tuesday, in a crackdown quickly welcomed by doctors.

The block on single-use vapes is aimed at reversing a "disturbing" increase in vaping among young people, Health Minister Mark Butler said.

Australia first revealed the import ban in May but had not given a start date until now.

Vaping had been sold to governments as a way to help long-term smokers quit, Butler said.

"It was not sold as a recreational product, especially not one targeted to our kids, but that is what it has become," the minister said.

"The great majority of vapes contain nicotine, and children are becoming addicted."

About one in seven children aged 14-17 uses vapes, the government said in a statement.

It cited "consistent evidence" that young Australians who vape are about three times more likely to take up tobacco smoking.

Legislation will also be introduced in 2024 to outlaw the manufacture, advertising or supply of disposable vapes in Australia, the government said.

The import ban was hailed by the Australian Medical Association.

"Australia has been a world leader in reducing smoking rates and the subsequent health harms, so the government's decisive action to stop vaping in its tracks and prevent further harm is very welcome," said the association's president, Steve Robson.

'Dangerous gateway'

The government said it was also introducing a scheme to enable doctors and nurses to prescribe vapes "where clinically appropriate" from January 1.

Australia has a long record of fighting smoking.

In 2012, it became the first country to introduce "plain packaging" laws for cigarettes -- a policy since copied by France, Britain and others.

High taxes have pushed up the price of a packet to about Aus$50 (US$33).

Neighbouring New Zealand until recently stood alongside Australia at the forefront of the battle.

But its new conservative coalition government, which took power this week, has now promised to scrap a so-called "generational smoking ban" that would have stopped sales of tobacco to anyone born after 2008.

For some people who would otherwise never have smoked, vaping is a "dangerous gateway" to tobacco smoking, said Kim Caudwell, senior lecturer in psychology at Australia's Charles Darwin University.

"So you can understand how at the population level, increased vaping and a resurgence of tobacco use will impact population health in the future."

Meanwhile, the official Instagram page of Yash Raj Films has claimed that Tiger 3 is “the highest-grossing Diwali release in the history of the Indian cinemas.” This is after the film has made a business of ₹ 427 crore across the globe. The text attached to the post read, “Tiger 3 roaring loud in cinemas near you now. In Hindi, Tamil & Telugu.”

In his review for NDTV, film critic Saibal Chatterjee said, “In his third outing as superspy Avinash Singh Rathore alias Tiger, Salman Khan, with aid of a story by producer Aditya Chopra and a screenplay from Shridhar Raghavan, proves that there is always a great deal of purchase from the spectacle of an irrepressible hero leaping off all kinds of perches and landing on his feet. The lead actor's star power comes in handy, but Tiger 3 (like Pathaan and unlike War) is gender-agnostic. Katrina Kaif is allowed almost as much of the action as the invincible Tiger, whose death-defying feats return in the third instalment in a bigger and more brazen form.”

The film is the third instalment of the Tiger franchise after Ek Tha Tiger [2012] and Tiger Zinda Hai [2017]. Tiger 3 is also the fifth film in the Yash Raj Spy Universe.

22-Year-Old Italian Student's Murder By Ex Sparks Nationwide Outrage

The murder of an Italian student, allegedly by her possessive ex-boyfriend, has shocked the nation and sparked a conversation on the issue of violence against women.

The body of Giulia Cecchettin, a 22-year-old from a small town near Venice, was found dumped near a lake, with multiple stab wounds. She had been missing for a week after going out with her former partner Filippo Turetta.

The manhunt was front-page news in Italy for days. Cecchettin was just days away from receiving her degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Padua.

Cecchettin's sister said the couple had broken up but had gone shopping together to buy a dress for her November 16 graduation ceremony before they disappeared.

CCTV footage presented by the public prosecutor in court showed the final moments of her life. Turetta, 22, can be seen beating his former partner in a car park close to her house.

She tried to escape, but prosecutors say he put duct tape on her mouth, forced her into his car, and drove to an industrial area, where he attacked her again. Turetta was arrested on a motorway in eastern Germany in a broken-down car late on Saturday, and is awaiting extradition.

This was the latest femicide case recorded this year in Italy, where dozens of women have been killed at the hands of their husbands or partners. As of November 24, 106 women have been killed this year in Italy, including 55 by their partner or former partner, interior ministry figures show, double the number in the year-ago period.

Giulia Cecchettin's murder has led to an unprecedented outpouring of grief and anger, with several protests being held across the country.

Protesters hold a banner reading If tomorrow its me, if tomorrow I dont come back, sisters, destroy everything!.

Days after the murder came to light, Italian lawmakers unanimously backed a raft of measures to clamp down on violence against women. The upper house Senate passed the bill proposed by the right-wing government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni by 157-to-0, a rare show of unity between the ruling parties and the opposition.

The new law expands protections for women at risk to prevent more serious violence and stem the wave of femicides.

"Every single woman killed because she is 'guilty' of being free is an aberration that cannot be tolerated and that pushes me to continue on the path taken to stop this barbarism," said Meloni, Italy's first woman prime minister.

Dublin Stabbing: Videos Of Violent Clashes In Ireland Surface Online

Violent clashes broke out between police and protesters in Dublin, Ireland, on Thursday, after a knife attack in the capital city earlier in the day left three young children and two adults injured. Videos on social media showed the chaotic scene in the city. While police in riot gear stood guard on the streets in the Irish capital, demonstrators taunted them with chants. They torched vehicles and looted several stores, causing mayhem in the city and halting public transport in wide areas.

One video on X (formerly Twitter) showed a Dublin Bus ablaze alongside a burning car. Another showed fireworks being set off towards the police by the crowds. A number of videos also showed several shops being broken into and people running away with items.

"Shocked to see the very emergency responders who rush to save lives being attacked while on duty. It's truly baffling," a caption of a video read, which showed a group of people attacking a fire engine.

"More Scenes from Dublin. I'm confused are they Protesters, Rioters or Looters?" the caption of another post read.

"I am so absolutely and utterly disgusted, devastated and ashamed at what's unfolded in Dublin tonight. All I can hold on to is that these Irish people destroying our city are not what we stand for, and not who we stand with. #DublinRiots," a user wrote while sharing the video of a bus on fire.

According to CNN, the commissioner of the gardai, as the Irish police are known, condemned the clashes as "disgraceful scenes" and blamed them on a "complete lunatic hooligan faction, driven by far-right ideology". Mr Harris has directed officers to make arrests in response to the violence.

"We ask people to act responsibly, not to listen to misinformation and rumour that is circulating on social media," the chief said, adding, "The facts are being established but the facts are still not clear, and a lot of the rumour and innuendo is being spread for malevolent purposes".

The man in his 50s was detained after the police said that he stabbed 5 people, including a 5-year-old girl who is currently receiving emergency treatment in the hospital with serious injuries. The incident took place in Parnell Square, in the city's centre, according to the gardai. Cops have not revealed the nationality of the suspect. But rumours on social media about the nationality of the assailant helped fuel unrest following the attack.

North Korea To Toughen Border Security After Spy Satellite Launch Success

North Korea said Thursday it would deploy new weapons and stronger armed forces to the border with the South, as Seoul's spy agency said Pyongyang had received Russian help to successfully put a military spy satellite into orbit.

Tuesday's launch of the "Malligyong-1" was Pyongyang's third attempt at securing a military eye in the sky after two failures in May and August.

North Korean state media claimed within hours of the launch that leader Kim Jong Un was already reviewing images of US military bases in Guam.

Seoul's National Intelligence Service told lawmakers the launch had been a success but cautioned it was too early to say if the satellite was working as Pyongyang claimed, adding the North had been given "feedback" by Russia after Kim met Russian President Vladimir Putin in September.

"After the summit with Putin, the North provided Moscow with the blueprint and data relevant to the first and second satellite launches. Russia in turn analysed those data and provided the North with feedback," the agency told lawmakers, according to a briefing by MP Yoo Sang-bum.

While the North claims the satellite is already functioning, the NIS -- which collected and analysed debris from one of Pyongyang's failed launches, finding it had no military utility -- said it was unlikely.

"Given it usually takes three years for satellite development, the current claims do not guarantee the North's satellite capability -- unless Pyongyang actually makes public those Guam base photos it mentioned," Yoo said.

Deal suspended

After the launch, Seoul partially suspended a five-year-old military accord and deployed "surveillance and reconnaissance assets" to the border, in what defence chief Shin Won-sik said Thursday was an "essential measure" to defend against the nuclear-armed North's growing threats.

North Korea's defence ministry on Thursday called Seoul's moves "reckless" and said it would also suspend -- in full -- the deal, saying Pyongyang "will never be bound" by the agreement again and would immediately beef up its own border security.

The North would now "deploy more powerful armed forces and new-type military hardware in the region along the Military Demarcation Line," the ministry said in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

The North also fired a ballistic missile early Thursday, Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, adding that the launch had not been successful.

The ballistic missile launch is a harbinger of things to come, said Yang Moo-jin, president of the University of North Korean Studies.

"In order to show that their suspension of the agreement does not amount to just empty words, it is expected that there will be a demonstration of force by violating the maritime border, deploying coastal artillery ... and launching various missiles," he said.

"As a result, there will be increased possibility of accidental armed clashes along the Military Demarcation Line and an increase in the possibility of these accidental armed conflicts escalating into war."

Satellite in orbit

North Korea's Kim personally oversaw the satellite launch, state media photographs showed, and later reviewed images of US military bases in Guam, purportedly sent by the country's new eye in the sky.

Pyongyang's defence ministry repeated Thursday that the satellite launch was part of its "right to self-defence" and dismissed the "extremely hysterical" response from the South in particular.

South Korea "must pay dearly for their irresponsible and grave political and military provocations that have pushed the present situation to an uncontrollable phase," the ministry continued.

KCNA has said the satellite will begin a formal reconnaissance mission on December 1.

Successfully putting a spy satellite into orbit would improve North Korea's intelligence-gathering capabilities, particularly over South Korea, and provide crucial data in any military conflict, experts say.

The launch also appears to kick off a space race on the peninsula, experts said, with Seoul planning to launch its first spy satellite via a SpaceX rocket later this month.

Massive Twist In OpenAI Saga, Sam Altman Returns As CEO Within 5 Days

OpenAI today announced that it has reached an agreement to bring back Sam Altman as CEO and appoint new board members after nearly all of its employees threatened to quit over his surprise sacking.

"We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO with a new initial board of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D'Angelo," the company said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The company added that it is working "to figure out the details" of the agreement.

Confirming the development, Sam Altman said he was looking forward to returning to OpenAI.

"I love openai, and everything i've done over the past few days has been in service of keeping this team and its mission together. I'm looking forward to returning to openai, and building on our strong partnership with msft (Microsoft)," Altman posted on X.

Minutes after Sam Altman announced his decision to return as OpenAI CEO, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who had recently welcomed Altman into the company, said they have discussed the matter and agreed that this is "a first essential step" to build a "more stable, well-informed, and effective governance" in OpenAI.

Altman, who was fired by OpenAI's board on Friday following disagreements on how fast to develop and monetise artificial intelligence, had been in negotiations with the company to return.

The shakeup wasn't the first at OpenAI, which was launched in 2015. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a co-founder of the non-profit, was once its co-chair, and in 2020 other executives departed, going on to found competitor Anthropic, which claims to have a greater focus on AI safety.

Altman had shot to fame with the launch of ChatGPT last year, which ignited a race to advance AI research and development, as well as billions being invested in the sector.

X CEO Linda Yaccarino Urged To Resign After Musk Endorses Antisemitic Post

Linda Yaccarino, the Chief Executive Officer of X (formerly Twitter), is being urged by a number of advertising executives to resign from her role in the wake of an advertiser exodus and scrutiny over owner Elon Musk's antisemitic remarks on the platform. According to CNN, over the weekend, a "groundswell" of advertising executives urged Ms Yaccarino to step down as the CEO of X in order to save her reputation before it was "damaged".

"I sent her a text yesterday after thinking about it long and hard saying that," said Lou Paskalis, chief executive of marketing consultancy AJL Advisory and a former top media executive at Bank of America. Mr Paskalis stated that other members of the industry had done the same. "My advice was to leave before her reputation was damaged," he added, as per CNN

However, Ms Yaccarino has refused to leave her position, the Financial Times reported. She believes in X's goals and the people working there, two people familiar with the matter told the outlet. Separately, Ms Yaccarino, who joined the social media platform earlier this year, also took to X to indicate that for now, she is not going anywhere.

"I believe deeply in our vision, our team, and our community," the X CEO posted on Monday. "I'm also deeply committed to the truth and there is no other team on earth working as hard as the teams at X," she added.

Notably, this comes after X owner Elon Musk came under fire for publicly endorsing an antisemitic conspiracy theory on the micro-blogging site. It also comes after two reports from the non-profit group Media Matters for America found advertisements for top brands next to pro-Nazi content. This prompted brands including IBM, Apple, Walt Disney, Comcast and Warner Bros to suspend their advertising on the platform. According to the Financial Times, they and other companies are also attempting to distance themselves from Mr Musk following his comments.

However, in a letter to employees sent on Sunday, which was viewed by CNN, Ms Yaccarino reaffirmed her commitment to the company's work. "Our work is critical, but it's not always easy. What we're doing matters, which means it naturally invites criticism from those who do not share our beliefs," she said, adding that X has taken steps to "combat antisemitism and discrimination".

Over the weekend, the platform accused Media Matters of aggressively searching for such content in a way that "misrepresented the real user experience" and could "mislead advertisers". However, X did not remove the pro-Nazi accounts mentioned in the Media Matters' report, saying that their posts had little engagement and that they would no longer be eligible for monetization. "No critic will ever deter us from our mission to protect free speech," Ms Yaccarino said in the letter.

On Monday, X even sued Media Matters, alleging the organization defamed the platform after it published a report that said ads for major brands had appeared next to posts touting Nazism.
