"The Indian Crowd Gave...": Rizwan's Special Praise For Fans In Hyderabad

Pakistan faced a five-wicket defeat against New Zealand in their ODI World Cup warm-up match in Hyderabad on Friday. Opting to bat first, Pakistan posted 345/5 in 50 overs with Mohammad Rizwan smashing 103 while skipper Babar Azam scoring 80 runs. Later, New Zealand chased down the target in just 43.4 overs as Rachin Ravindra playing a terrific knock of 97 runs. Apart from him, skipper Babar Azam also scored a half-century, who was playing his first match, since March.

Despite being on the losing side, the match turned out to be memorable one for Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan, who scored a century in 93 balls. After the first innings of the match, Rizwan expressed gratitude towards the people of Hyderabad for giving a warm welcome to the team on their arrival.

"A hundred is a hundred, proud and happy of it. Scoring a century for Pakistan is always special. The Indian crowd gave us a lot of love at the airport itself, just like how our fans love us back in Pakistan. We were welcomed in India in a great way," Rizwan said during the mid-innings.

Rizwan further spoke about his batting position in the team and stated that he can bat wherever the team needs him.

"In T20Is I open for Pakistan, in Tests I bat at 6-7 and in ODIs I bat at number 4, I play according to the team requirements. Saud Shakeel is in great form and he played a classy knock today. Hopefully he turns out to be a great player in the ODI format as well. I and Babar try to rotate the strike, we bat similarly, our communication is good and that helps us," he added.

Talking about the match, Kane Williamson showed his class in his first competitive outing in six months while Rachin Ravindra sizzled at the top of the order as New Zealand gunned down a 346-run target.

Barring the openers, Pakistan batters including Mohammad Rizwan (103 retired hurt off 91), Babar Azam (80 off 84) and Saud Shaukeel (75 off 53) had a good hit in the middle, helping their team post a daunting 345 for five in 50 overs.

New Zealand cruised to the target in 43.4 overs with contributions from Ravindra (97 off 72), Williamson (54 off 50), Daryl Mitchell (59 retired hurt off 57) and Mark Chapman (65 not out off 41).

"PM Trudeau Should Stop Khalistani Radicalisation": Hindu Groups In Canada

A group of eminent Indian-Americans has condemned the brazen hateful comments and a hostile environment against Hindus in Canada and asked Ottawa not to mix freedom of expression with freedom for terror and endorse hate crimes by being silent on the issue. The demand by Indian-Americans came after an offensive video from a pro-Khalistan group threatening Hindus in Canada to leave the country went viral.

“It is concerning to see Khalistani terrorists repeatedly threaten Hindu Canadians by desecrating and scarring Hindu sacred spaces on Canadian soil. Silence in the face of such brazen Hinduphobia - or worse, the justification that this is an acceptable form of political expression - is tantamount to the endorsement of hate crimes,” said Professor Indu Vishwanathan, co-founder and co-director of the Understanding Hinduphobia at the Hindu University of America.

“The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should not mix freedom of expression with freedom for terror. He should instead stop radicalisation, and drug gangs and diplomatically handle international situations,” Khanderao Kand, from the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS), said in a media statement.

The video surfaced days after Trudeau's allegations on September 18 of the “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, on Canadian soil on June 18 in British Columbia.

India angrily rejected Trudeau's allegations as “absurd” and “motivated.” Though the Canadian government has said that acts of aggression, hate, intimidation or incitement of fear have no place in Canada, there was no action against anyone in connection with the video.

The chair of government affairs of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, Dr Sampath Shivangi appealed to US President Joe Biden and the US Congress to intervene and send a message to Canada to protect Canadian Indians, Hindus and thousands of Indian students from the threats.

On concerns of spilling this hatred over to the US, Chicago-based prominent Indian American leader Bharat Barai said, “I doubt it will spill over. We should keep calm but vigilant. Khalistan sympathisers represent a very tiny misled minority, instigated by ISI and involved in drug trafficking, human trafficking and other violent criminal activities.” Chief editor of Khalsa Today Sukhi Chahal separated the hateful radicals from Sikhism and said: “As a Sikh, I firmly believe in the teachings of our Gurus, which emphasise the unity of all humanity." Statements like the one from Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the chief of the banned outfit Sikhs for Justice, don't represent true Sikh values. Let's stand together for harmony and respect among all communities, he said.

On the recent threats to Hindus and Indians, Sri Iyer, editor of the PGurus portal, a US-based media company said: “There is a thin line between freedom of speech and hate speech and Gurpatwant Singh Pannun crossed it when he threatened Hindu Canadians."

"We Are Without Hope": Afghan Refugees Crackdown Continues In Pakistan

The cow had been slaughtered and bags of rice purchased but young bride Wahida's nuptials were cut short when her groom was arrested on their wedding day, one of hundreds caught in a recent crackdown on Afghans living in Pakistan.

The 20-year-old now lives with her in-laws at the Afghan Muhajir aid camp in the port mega-city of Karachi but without her husband-to-be, a registered refugee.

"We are without hope," the groom's mother, Safar Gul, told AFP. "The police took away our son. What can we do, they have the power."

Faizur Rehman, 22, was arrested "just because he was Afghan", another relative named Zulaikha said.

Afghans have poured into Pakistan in their millions during decades of successive wars, many living in aid camps with restricted access to education, healthcare and employment.

Around 1.3 million are registered refugees and 880,000 more have legal status to remain in Pakistan, according to the latest United Nations figures.

Police and politicians have said a recent round-up targets only those without legal status and is in response to rising crime and poor regulation of immigration that is straining resources.

At least 700 Afghans have been arrested since early September in Karachi alone -- 10 times more than in August -- and hundreds more in the other cities, according to official police figures.

Afghans say the arrests have been indiscriminate.

They accuse police of extorting money and ignoring legal documents, while pointing to rising anti-Afghan sentiment as prolonged economic hardship burdens Pakistani households and tensions rise between Islamabad and Kabul's new Taliban government.

"We have been working day and night getting people released," said Habibur Rehman, who fled Afghanistan in the 1980s during Soviet rule but now represents the Afghan government's refugee ministry at the camp.

"There have been crackdowns every three, four years, but this time has been the worst."

An estimated 600,000 Afghans have arrived since the Taliban seized power in Kabul in August 2021 and imposed their austere version of sharia or Islamic law.

Lawyers have said the police operation has been complicated by registration cards for vast numbers of documented Afghans expiring at the end of June, although their status remains in place until the government rules on their renewal.

Naqibullah, who lives in a rudimentary house in the camp, said he and his father handed over 46,000 rupees ($160) to avoid jail after they were picked up by police, despite being documented refugees with permission to legally remain in Pakistan.

They were advised to keep a low profile to avoid re-arrest and stay away from the kiosk they run outside the camp.

"Leaving our business behind is never an easy decision but the fear is so overwhelming that I can't even venture out to the market. We have no choice but to remain at home," he said.

Pakistani lawyer Moniza Kakar said she can do little for Afghans who do not have documents, and that those recently deported include the sick and poor, as well as human rights defenders and women students.

More than 1,800 Afghans were deported from Karachi last year, city police said, and nearly 1,700 have been arrested so far in 2023.

But Kakar, along with the several other lawyers giving free legal help to Afghans, said the vast majority in this sweep are documented, compared to roughly a quarter rounded up in past crackdowns.

"Our action is purely aimed at illegal immigrants," Karachi police chief Khadim Rind told AFP, adding that allegations of arrests of legal document holders and bribe-taking should be investigated.

Afghan consul general Syed Abdul Jabbar said Afghans in Pakistan were paying the price for disputes between Kabul and Islamabad.

Relations have soured since the Taliban government seized power, with a sharp rise in  attacks along Pakistan's border that Islamabad alleges are being planned on Afghan soil -- a charge Kabul denies.

A long-running border dispute has also seen key trade crossings closed for days.

But these issues should be "sorted out at the negotiating table", Jabber said. "A crackdown on Afghans is the wrong approach."

The pressure has seen some families sell what they can and return to Afghanistan, refugee community leaders said. Others were reluctant to uproot their lives to return to a country mired in its own economic crisis, despite the end of decades of fighting.

Day labourer Habib has been a refugee in Pakistan for more than half his life but says he lost his documentation several years ago.

"I have lived with more freedom here than in our own country," the 76-year-old told AFP.

"We don't have documents and we are afraid they will give us trouble, but we are obeying the law," he said. "If they don't forcefully kick us out, we won't go to Afghanistan."

"Cuddling Up To Putin": Vivek Ramaswamy Faces Heat For Ukraine Stance

Indian-American Republican presidential aspirant Vivek Ramaswamy has infuriated his Republican primary rivals when he said that he will not back Ukraine in its war against Russia, aligning himself with former president Donald Trump who wants to abandon critical support of Kyiv.

“We have to level with the American people on this issue,” the 38-year-old multimillionaire biotech entrepreneur said.

“Just because (Russian President Vladimir) Putin is an evil dictator does not mean that Ukraine is good. This is a country that has banned 11 opposition parties, that has actually...,” Ramaswamy said during the second Republican presidential primary at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California, on Wednesday.

Ramaswamy's isolationist tilt drew major blowback from former vice president Mike Pence, former governor of New Jersey Chris Christie and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley.

Haley, who is also of Indian origin, was the first to jump in and oppose such a move by Ramaswamy.

“A win for Russia is a win for China,” she said.

Ramaswamy disagreed.

“China is the real enemy. We are driving Russia further into China's arms. We need a reasonable peace plan to end this, this is a country whose president just last week was hailing a Nazi in his own ranks,” he said.

Pence joined Haley in slamming Ramaswamy for his comments.

“Vivek, if you let Putin have Ukraine, that's a green light to China to take Taiwan. Peace comes through strength,” he said. “We need a reasonable plan to peace. We need a reasonable plan to peace,” Ramaswamy responded.

Christie too slammed Ramaswamy.

“The Chinese are paying for the Russian war in Ukraine. The Iranians are supplying more sophisticated weapons, and so are the North Koreans now as well, with the encouragement of the Chinese,” he said.

“The naivete on this stage from some of these folks is extraordinary,” Christie said.

“Look, I understand people want to go and talk to Putin. Guess what? So did George W. Bush. So did Barack Obama. So did Donald Trump. And so did Joe Biden, when he said a small invasion wouldn't be so bad. Every one of them has been wrong,” he said.

“The fact of the matter is, we need to say right now that the Chinese-Russian alliance is something we have to fight against. And we are not going to solve it by going over and cuddling up to Vladimir Putin. Look, Donald Trump said Vladimir Putin was brilliant and a great leader. This is the person who is murdering people in his own country. And now, not having enough blood, he's now going to Ukraine to murder innocent civilians and kidnap 20,000 children,” he said.

“And let me tell you, if you think that's where it's going to stop, if we give him any of Ukraine, next will be Poland,” Christie said.

In an email to his supporters after the debate, Ramaswamy said that he was once again the number one target of his fellow Republican candidates.

“Nikki Haley said she felt "dumber" when I spoke. Tim Scott came after my business record. Ron DeSantis' Super PAC wouldn't stop tweeting about me. While they launched their attacks on my platform last night, I focused on the Truth,” he said.

"Every Time I Hear You...": Rival's Swipe At Vivek Ramaswamy's TikTok Debut

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley has slammed her fellow Indian-American rival in the Republican primary race Vivek Ramaswamy for joining Chinese-owned TikTok, saying "every time I hear you, I feel a little bit dumber.' Haley, the former two-term Governor from South Carolina and the former US Ambassador to the UN, was very critical of the 38-year-old biotech entrepreneur Ramaswamy and the two entered into a war of words during the second Republican presidential primary debate at Reagan Library in Simi Valley in California on Wednesday.

“Every time I hear you, I feel a little bit dumber. This is infuriating because TikTok is one of the most dangerous social media apps we could have,” Haley told Ramaswamy during the debate as the two entered into verbal duels multiple times during the two-hour-long debate boycotted by former US president Donald Trump and the current frontrunner.

Haley, 51, jumped in when Ramaswamy was responding to a question about him joining TikTok, a social media site that has been banned by many countries, including India.

Asked about his move to join the video-sharing app TikTok, despite it being banned on government-issued devices due to concerns about its parent company's ties to the Chinese government, Ramaswamy said, “Part of how we win elections is reaching the next generation of young Americans where we are.” Kids under 16 should not be on “addictive social media,” Ramaswamy said, but “we're only going to ever get to declaring independence from China, which I favour if we actually win.” “This is infuriating because TikTok is one of the most dangerous social media apps that we could have. And...honestly, every time I hear you, I feel a little bit dumber for what you say,” Haley said.

“One hundred and fifty million people are on TikTok. That means they can get your contacts, they can get your financial information, they can get your emails, they can get your text messages, they can get all of these things. China knows exactly what they're doing,” she said.

In February, Haley said under her leadership, “Communist China will end up on the ash heap of history.” “We can't trust you. We can't trust you. We can't have TikTok in our kids' lives,” Haley told Ramaswamy.

Ramaswamy fought back.

“I think we will be better served as a Republican party if we are not sitting here hurling personal insults and actually have a legitimate debate about policy following Reagan's example and in his honour,” he said.

“And the answer is, that is what actually makes our country strong, and I believe in these people. I believe in these people on this stage, they're good people, but let's have a legitimate discussion,” he said.

Haley was not the only candidate on the stage to attack Ramaswamy, who was among the youngest on the stage. Haley is the only woman in the Republican party's presidential aspirants.

The Democratic Party also attacked Ramaswamy through a press release.

“Vivek Ramaswamy has high praise for Donald Trump, even calling Trump “the most successful president in our century.” Ramaswamy is trying to out-MAGA his opponents, promising to take Trump's extreme MAGA agenda even further, siding with (Russian President Vladimir) Putin over our allies, and backing more tax handouts for the ultra-wealthy,” it said.

Following the debate, the Haley Campaign said she didn't shy away from pointing out her opponents' dangerous policies, including Vivek Ramaswamy's support for TikTok, Trump's failure to prioritise the larger Chinese threat, and Ron DeSantis' ban on fracking and offshore drilling.

Animal Teaser: Ranbir Kapoor's Villain Arc Begins At Home

The makers of Animal released the film's teaser on Ranbir Kapoor's 41st birthday. The teaser is as intense as it gets. The video begins with Ranbir Kapoor's character and his love interest Rashmika Mandanna taking a stroll together when she asks him, "Thought about kids?" Ranbir replies that he wants to be a father. When Rashmika asks him if he will be like his father, a triggered Ranbir Kapoor recalls his equation with his dad Anil Kapoor and it is so distant from being healthy. There are flashback sequences of Anil Kapoor slapping his son mercilessly. Back to the present - Ranbir argues with Rashmika that his father "is the best father in the world."

Anil Kapoor's excuse for his troubled relationship with son is this, "I am sure I made some mistakes. I didn't know how to train a son." Ranbir replies, "You trained me well" and cue dramatically intense music, snippets of him transforming into a gangster of sorts. The teaser ends with Ranbir Kapoor bleeding as a voice over from him warns his father that this is just the beginning and a lot more is yet to happen. He also asks his father to "finish him." The him in question appears to be Bobby Deol, who turns up only at the end of the video - no words spoken, just a knife in hand.

Check out the teaser of Animal here:

Earlier, Animal  was slated to release on August 11 this year and it would have clashed with Sunny Deol's Gadar 2 and Akshay Kumar and Pankaj Tripathi's OMG 2. However, the makers shifted the film's release date to December this year. Gadar 2 was a smash hit at the box office, while OMG 2 was moderately successful.

Directed by Arjun Reddy director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, other than Ranbir Kapoor, Animal also stars Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Triptii Dimri in pivotal roles.

Hyundai, Kia Recall 3 Million Cars In US Over Fire Risk

South Korean car manufacturers Hyundai and Kia are issuing recalls for 3.3 million vehicles in the United States due to their risk of suddenly catching fire, regulators announced Wednesday.

"Until these recalled vehicles have been repaired... the safest place to park them is outside and away from homes and other structures," the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a statement.

"Fires can occur whether the vehicle is parked and turned off or while driving."

The vehicles in question include 1.64 million from Hyundai and Genesis, concerning 2010 to 2015 models, and 1.73 million Kias, ranging from 2010 to 2017.

The problem comes from an issue with the vehicles' anti-lock brake systems (ABS), "which could leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short," the NHTSA said.

"Hyundai plans to notify owners to bring their vehicles to the nearest dealership to replace the ABS module fuse," the agency said. "Kia is still working on a remedy."

Neither company knows of "any crashes, injuries or fatalities associated with this defect."

Hyundai has recorded 21 vehicle fires linked to the default in the United States, as well as "22 thermal incidents," including visible smoke, burning and melting.

Kia has recorded one engine compartment fire, "three fires in the unit, and six instances of melting components."

Violent Crime On The Rise In US, 28% Jump In Homicide Cases This Year

Violent crime is on the rise in the US capital, where a 28 per cent uptick in homicides this year has left researchers perplexed and politicians pointing fingers.

And while Washington is still a far cry from its days as the "murder capital" of the United States, amid the 1990s crack epidemic, the rise in violent crime in the city is both causing consternation among residents and dividing them.

Some of the killings have been especially grim: a 10-year-old girl who died from a stray bullet on Mother's Day; an Afghan immigrant who, having fled his country after the Taliban took over, was shot to death while working a late shift as a Lyft driver.

Puzzling researchers is the fact that Washington's murder rate has jumped while other major metros in the United States have seen declines. Also, the number of armed carjackings in the city has more than doubled, according to police statistics.

"DC is something of an outlier with respect to homicide trends," when compared to cities like New York, Philadelphia, Chicago or Baltimore, says Richard Rosenfeld, a criminologist at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Rosenfeld added that the explanation behind the uptick "remains something of a mystery."

Meanwhile, Joseph Richardson, a professor at the University of Maryland who studies violence prevention programs in Washington, has several theories.

"We can speculate that there may be a few things that are happening," he tells AFP, including a recent change in police leadership. He also suspects the number of shootings linked to drug trafficking is underestimated.

Another theory is the destabilizing effect of gentrification.

As certain neighborhoods improve, poor renters can be priced out. In the United States, where poverty often falls along racial lines, it's frequently Black Americans who are uprooted.

But some arguments put forward by authorities and politicians -- such as a lack of police officers, or the fact that two-thirds of arrests aren't followed up with prosecutions -- don't convince Rosenfeld, the criminologist.

And Washington is hardly the only city in the United States awash with guns.

Rather, "it appears that Washington has recovered more slowly from the dislocations of the pandemic than many other cities," he says, leaving certain areas that were once "congested with pedestrians... relatively empty as a result."

The city is a far cry from where it was in the 1980s and 90s, when entire swaths of Washington were considered dangerous. Both international and domestic tourists still flock to the city's flower-filled streets, and many residents can claim a high quality of life and easy access to amenities.

Yet things have changed enough to alter some Washingtonians' habits, like those who now avoid going to gas stations at night, worried about carjackings.

The consular section of the Embassy of Mexico issued a statement on social media warning that the city "is experiencing a significant increase in crime in areas previously considered safe."

One restaurant in Washington posted on X, formerly Twitter, calling for help as the corner it sits on becomes "a haven for crime and harassment."

Debates on why crime has risen and what to do about it have become hot-button political issues in a country whose instances of police brutality have at times shocked the world.

Pamela Smith, named the local police chief this summer, has called for an "all-government approach" at a moment where "there seems to be an uptick in our juveniles committing some of these crimes."

City council member Trayon White, meanwhile, caused a storm when he called for the deployment of the National Guard.

In March, Republicans in Congress summoned city officials for a hearing, accusing the Democratic-majority city of being "soft on crime."

But Jada, a 28-year-old Black security guard who works downtown and preferred not to give her last name, wondered if politicians and authorities actually care about crime in the city.

"Homicide rates, I feel like it's mostly Black-on-Black crime," she told AFP. "Because it's Black-on-Black or it is Hispanic-on-Hispanic, I don't feel like they care. I feel like they're just going to let it happen."

Whether they care or not, the killings aren't stopping: on Monday, in the southwest of the city, where Jada lives, yet another teenager was killed in a shooting.

Watch: 6 Consecutive Sixes, 50 In 9 Balls! Nepal Batter Creates History

In a record-breaking display, Nepal batters smashed three different world records as they took on Mongolia in an Asian Games 2023 match on Wednesday. While most batters managed to score runs effortlessly, the man who shone the most was Dipendra Singh, having scored 6 consecutive fifties, en route fastest T20I fifty in international cricket. Nepal went on to post a 300-plus total in the game, becoming the first team in the history of the sport to score 314/3 in 20 overs.

Kushal Malla, a 19-year-old left-handed batter, struck the fastest-ever T20I hundred in the history of the game, reaching the triple-digit score in 34 balls. In the process, he surpassed David Miller and Rohit Sharma's joint record. The South African and Indian batters had scored fifty in 35 balls previously.

Batting at No 3, Malla smashed 12 sixes and eight fours to remain unbeaten on 137 and power Nepal to the highest-ever T20I score of 314 for 3 against Mongolia, who opted to field.

Then came Dipendra Singh Airee, the all-rounder at No. 5, who rewrote the record books, blasting a nine-ball fifty that bettered Yuvraj Singh's 16-year-old record. Yuvra, during the ICC World T20 match in 2007, had scored a half-century against England in 12 balls for his fifty en route to scoring 58. In the innings, Yuvraj had also scored six consecutive sixes against Stuart Broad.

Social media went berserk, lauding Dipendra's heroics. Although the feat came against minnows Mongolia, the batter still required a giant effort to do what he did in the Asian Games.

Dipendra also smashes 6 successive sixes in the game, matching Yuvraj's record.

As far as the team totals go, the previous record for the highest innings total in a single T20I was held by Afghanistan. In a match against Ireland, Afghanistan had amassed 278 for 3 in 2019.

Pitbull With Volleball-Sized Tumour Enjoys New Life After Surgery In US

A dog in United States' Washington has undergone a successful surgery to remove a volleyball-sized tumour and is now living with its new family. The 5-year-old Pitbull named Libby was brought to the Humane Society of Tacoma-Pierce County along with 40 other neglected animals, according to Fox13. Libby arrived at the animal shelter on August 17 with a 10-pound tumour on the bone of its upper right leg that left the dog unable to move, the outlet further said.

Two parakeets, five geckos, one bearded dragon, eight snakes, four rabbits and one kitten were the other animals that were handed over to the society for care.

After Libby's surgery, the centre held a christening ceremony and changed its name to 'Wiggles'. While the tumour was removed, the dog's leg was also amputated.

However, it was diagnosed with aggressive bone cancer and veterinarians gave her a shirt life expectancy.

Wiggles was adopted by one of the veterinary technicians who had cared for the dog during surgery. The woman hopes to give the dog a comfortable life now.

The technician told Fox13 that Wiggles loves playing with other dogs and taking naps on the couch wrapped in blankets.

Last month, an animal shelter in Ohio took in more than 80 rescued dogs from what investigators described as "the most horrible conditions".

The dogs were rescued from another shelter where at least 30 dead canines were in refrigerators and freezers.

Others were discovered in cages filled with urine and faeces.

The animals were held at two structures in Madison Township, which is north of Cincinnati.

Scientists Discover 8th Continent That Had Been Missing For 375 Years

After almost 375 years, geoscientists have discovered a continent that had been hiding in plain sight. The small team of geologists and seismologists has created a newly refined map of Zealandia or Te Riu-a-Maui, reported Phys.org. The researchers found it by using the data obtained from dredged rock samples recovered from the ocean floor. The details of the research have been published in the journal Tectonics.

According to a BBC report, Zealandia is a vast continent of 1.89 million sq miles (4.9 million sq km) it is around six times the size of Madagascar. The team of scientists informed that there are in fact 8 continents- and the latest addition breaks all records, as the smallest, thinnest, and youngest in the world.

The new continent is 94 per cent underwater, with just a handful of islands, similar to New Zealand. "This is an example of how something very obvious can take a while to uncover," says Andy Tulloch, a geologist at the New Zealand Crown Research Institute GNS Science, who was part of the team that discovered Zealandia, BBC reported.

Scientists say that Zealandia has always been difficult to study. Scientists are now studying collections of rocks and sediment samples brought up from the ocean bed, most of which came from drilling sites-others came from the shores of islands in the area.

Phys.org reported that the study of the rock samples showed geologic patterns in West Antarctica that hinted at the possibility of a subduction zone near the Campbell Plateau off the west coast of New Zealand. The researchers did not find magnetic anomalies in that area, however, which argues against theories surrounding a strike-slip in the Campbell Fault.

The newly refined map shows not only the location of the magmatic arc axis of the Zealandia continent but other major geological features as well.

Zealandia was originally part of the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana, which was formed about 550 million years ago and essentially lumped together all the land in the southern hemisphere.

"Will Continue To Raise Voice In Support Of Afghanistan": India At UN

India's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj has reiterated the country's steadfast dedication to peace, stability and humanitarian support for Afghanistan.

In a UN Security Council briefing on Afghanistan on Wednesday, Kamboj highlighted three key observations regarding the situation in Afghanistan while drawing upon India's historical and civilisational ties with the Afghan people.

“At #UNSC Briefing on Afghanistan, Amb @ruchirakamboj, our Permanent Representative, reaffirmed India's steadfast dedication to peace, stability & humanitarian support for our Afghan friends. India's commitment shines through educational scholarships & collaborations with UN agencies,” posted Permanent Mission of India to the UN on X.

“As Afghanistan's contiguous neighbour and a friend to its people, India has direct stakes in ensuring the return of peace and stability to the country,” said Kamboj at the outset of her address.

She also said that India's collective approach to Afghanistan has been articulated in Security Council Resolution 2593, which was adopted on August 30, 2021, following the fall of Kabul and the subsequent Taliban takeover.

“In this regard, our common and immediate priorities include providing humanitarian assistance for the Afghan people, the formation of an inclusive and representative government structure, combating terrorism and drug trafficking, and preserving the rights of women, children and minorities,” Kamboj added.

India's permanent representative to the UN also underscored India's commitment to helping Afghan people through educational scholarships and collaborations with UN agencies.

“Given the distressing humanitarian situation in the country, we need to prioritize humanitarian assistance to the people. India has delivered assistance to Afghanistan in the form of food grains, medicines, vaccines, disaster relief aid, winter clothing and materials for education,” she said.

She said that India has continued scholarships to Afghan students. It has also partnered with the UN Office of Drugs and Crime in its humanitarian efforts, and our assistance will continue for the benefit of the people of Afghanistan,” Khamboj said.

“We have collaborated with several UN agencies on the ground and will continue to do so for the welfare of the people of the country,” she said.

She reaffirmed India's unwavering commitment to “keeping Afghanistan close to our hearts”.

“Going forward, India will continue to raise its voice in support of the Afghan people. We believe that the pursuit of peace and stability in Afghanistan is an urgent and shared imperative that demands our collective dedication,” said Kamboj.

Already grappling with poverty, Afghanistan found itself sinking further into destitution due to international isolation and the economic turmoil triggered by the Taliban's takeover in 2021.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported a staggering increase in poverty, with 97 per cent of Afghans living below the poverty line, a stark rise from 47 per cent in 2020, according to Amnesty International, an international non-governmental organisation focused on human rights, with its headquarters in the United Kingdom

The absence of social safety nets forced desperate families into distressing measures such as child marriages and organ trafficking. Despite dire circumstances, the humanitarian aid provided fell far short of meeting the basic needs of the population.

The Afghan economy continued to suffer from the freezing of foreign reserves and the reduction of development assistance, punitive actions taken by the international community in response to the Taliban's ascent.

In 2022, most of the aid flowing into Afghanistan was humanitarian in nature, primarily aimed at averting starvation, with minimal support for other critical social services such as healthcare, employment, and education.

The mass exodus of skilled professionals—doctors, engineers, lawyers, teachers, and government officials—left these sectors severely under-resourced, exacerbating the country's woes.

The Taliban regime imposed increasingly draconian restrictions on women's rights, stifled media freedom, and curtailed freedom of expression. Institutions dedicated to safeguarding human rights were either severely restricted or completely shuttered. Peaceful protesters found themselves at the mercy of arbitrary arrests, torture, and enforced disappearances.

Women's rights suffered relentless attacks, severely limiting their participation in public life. Shockingly, Afghanistan stood alone as the only country where girls were forbidden from attending secondary school. Almost all initiatives addressing gender-based violence, established during the previous government, were dismantled by the Taliban, leaving women and vulnerable populations even more vulnerable, Amnesty International reported.

Barbed Wires And Bleeding Migrants: A Day At The US-Mexico Border

The sun had barely risen above Eagle Pass, Texas, when the migrants wading across the Rio Grande from Mexico had a crisis on their hands.

They had tied their belts together to create a makeshift rope to hold onto but it broke, and the river was sweeping away a mother and her one-year-old baby.

Such harrowing scenes are a daily occurrence on the southern US border, where thousands are crossing each day in search of their own American dream despite the dangers to themselves, efforts by Texas authorities to keep them out and gridlock on the national level about how to respond to the influx.

READ | Texas City On Verge Of "Breaking Point" As Migrants Flood Border

The child was grabbed by another man deep in the river, and the mother reached the shore as US authorities just watched. The migrants passed a rope to baby Olga and Yonder Urbina, a temporary relief to the day's already high-strung start.

"It's sad to see a baby in those conditions, that it's the mother's life or her daughter's life," said Urbina.

But the calm that had just washed over the migrants was short-lived.

Greeting them on the US side of the Rio Grande was an inextricable tangle of concertina wire, which Texas authorities reinforce daily.

But turning back is not an option, and there is no obstacle that discourages them -- not this far into their journey, with the end goal of reaching US soil so close.

They eventually find a section of border wall made of shipping containers. Rather than being deterred, they simply climb over.

Meanwhile, back at the river, more migrants cross, and Border Patrol agents prepare their boat for river rescues.

Those on the US side crowd the concertina wire wall, as temperatures climb past 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.7 Celsius).

Worried about the scorching desert heat, Border Patrol agents eventually relent, cutting the wire to rescue them from the brutal temperatures.

"We just want to get our children ahead," says Venezuelan Yusmayra Pirela, 38.

Another woman, Maria Argentina, a double amputee, finds herself and her wheelchair stuck on an island in the middle of the river. Border patrol agents worry that the currents would make a boat rescue impossible.

After a makeshift rescue by her fellow migrants, Argentina, covered in mud, bursts into tears upon reaching the shore.

Elsewhere, migrants push through sections of the wire, tearing their clothing. Some are cut, bleeding profusely.

For many who are taken into custody and later released, months or years of legal uncertainty await them while their asylum claims work through a severely backlogged system.

As the sun sets, Texas authorities cover holes in the wire. But they know the same scenes will repeat themselves tomorrow -- and the day after that.

"This is a hot spot," a Border Patrol agent says.

"Today was tense," he adds. "But for us, it's another day at the border."

"Not Kept In Loop": Canada Province Premier On Trudeau's India Allegations

The premier of Canada's British Columbia province, where Sikh extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed, has said he was not taken into the loop on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's explosive allegations against India and came to know about it only one hour before they came in the public domain.

Premier David Eby's comments came as he met Prime Minister Trudeau on Monday, on a day when some Khalistan supporters held demonstrations outside the Indian missions in Vancouver, Ottawa and Toronto.

Tensions flared between India and Canada following Prime Minister Trudeau's allegations of the "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Nijjar, 45, outside a gurdwara in Surrey in British Columbia on June 18. India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020.

India has angrily rejected the allegations as "absurd" and "motivated" and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat move to Ottawa's expulsion of an Indian official over the case. India last week asked Canada to crack down on terrorists and anti-India elements operating from its soil and suspended visa services for Canadians.

Eby told CTV News he only learned one hour before the public did about the prime minister's allegation that India may have been involved in the murder.

He said he wants the federal government to share security intelligence with provinces.

"There's a critical need for provinces to be brought into the loop at an earlier stage," CTV News quoted Eby as saying on Monday.

"CSIS (the Canadian Security Intelligence Service), for example, by law is required to only share their intelligence with the federal government, It means that when they brief me - which they did that day - they can share basically what's in the public domain already, which is not helpful. I can read the newspaper, too," he said.

Following Trudeau's allegations, Eby said he was deeply disturbed and angered by this information.

"I call, yet again, on the federal government to share all relevant information related to any known ongoing foreign interference & transnational organized crime threats with our provincial authorities & our government, so we may act in coordination and protect those at risk," he had said.

On Monday, Prime Minister Trudeau met with Eby.

According to Trudeau's office, the two leaders discussed how all governments can continue working together to improve housing supply and affordability for Canadians.

Prime Minister Trudeau and Premier Eby discussed public safety, including federal legislation to strengthen Canada's bail regime, which was recently passed in the House of Commons. The legislation makes changes to the Criminal Code's bail regime.

Prime Minister Trudeau and Premier Eby agreed to remain in close contact and to continue working together on shared priorities, it said.

Trudeau on Friday said that Canada shared with India "many weeks ago" evidence on the killing of Nijjar and wants New Delhi to commit constructively with Ottawa to establish the facts in the "very serious matter."

When asked about Canada sharing any information in the case with India, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi said: "No specific information has been shared by Canada on this case, either then or before or after. We have, you know, as we have said, or I think we have made very clear, we are willing to look at any specific information."

Canada's Defence Minister Bill Blair on Sunday voiced concern over the measures taken by India including the suspension of visa services for Canadians and urged New Delhi to cooperate fully in the investigation of the killing of Nijjar to uncover the truth and work together to resolve it in an appropriate way.

Ashwin Shatters Kumble's All-Time Record, Creates History vs Australia

Once against proving his credentials in white-ball cricket, Ravichandran Ashwin put on a show with the ball as India took on Australia in the 2nd ODI of the 3-match series. The marquee spinner, who hasn't been in India's scheme of things in the 50-over format for long, made a strong case for ODI World Cup selection with his performance against the mighty Aussies. As Ashwin claimed three wickets in the Indore match, he went on to shatter an all-time record that was held by the legendary Anil Kumble.

With figures of 3 for 41 against Australia, Ashwin played a pivotal role in India's 99-run victory (DLS). With these three wickets, Ashwin went to 144 scalps against Australia in international cricket.

The record was earlier held by Kumble who has 142 wickets against the Aussies. Now, Ashwin has the most wickets for an Indian against a single opponent in international cricket.

Following the duo are Kapil Dev (141 vs Pakistan), Kumble (135 vs Pakistan), and Kapil (132 vs West Indies).

While Ashwin would hope to see such performances of his earn him a spot in India's World Cup squad, former Australia captain Aaron Finch doesn't think that would happen.

"I think that depends on how they think the surfaces are going to play throughout the country, and by that time, I think the skill in picking a squad for the World Cup is you have to think of the back end. But you can't think too much about it because you have to get there," Finch said on Star Sports.

"I think he might struggle to make it to the final 15, but as somebody who has played so much cricket, I think the rest of the group that is with the Indian team for this current series against Australia, they could learn so much about big game play. Because Ashwin is somebody that stands up in big games, whether it's a test match or a T20 game, he has done it all throughout his career. So I wouldn't be surprised if he's there at the moment as a mentor around the group, but I don't see him making that last 15, unfortunately," he added.

With Axar Patel injured, Ashwin could find a spot in India's 15-man squad for the World Cup.

"Publicly And Privately" Urged India To Cooperate In Canada Probe: US

The United States has said Canada's investigation into the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar must proceed and the perpetrators brought to justice. Canada has alleged that Indian authorities were behind Nijjar's killing. New Delhi has strongly denied the allegations as baseless.

"We are deeply concerned by the allegations referenced by (Canadian) Prime Minister (Justin) Trudeau. We remain in close contact with our Canadian partners," State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters at his daily news conference.

"We believe it's critical that Canada's investigation proceeds and that the perpetrators be brought to justice. And we have publicly - and privately - urged the Indian government to cooperate in the Canadian investigation," Miller said in response to a question.

Biden Trailing Behind Trump By 10 Points In Pre-Poll Survey

A new poll by the Washington Post and ABC News has shown President Joe Biden trailing behind his predecessor Donald Trump in a hypothetical November 2024 match.

"Trump edges out Biden 51-42 in head-to-head matchup,” the poll said. Trump is way ahead of his other Republican rivals in the party's presidential race. The GOP's formal nomination process will begin with the Iowa Caucus and the New Hampshire Primary in January.

While two of the Indian-American Republican presidential aspirants -- former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy -- have gained momentum in recent weeks, Trump is far ahead of his GOP rivals and political pundits believe that he is on his way to becoming the party's nominee.

The Washington Post-ABC News poll released on Sunday said that a record number of Americans say they have become worse off under his presidency. Three-quarters say he's too old for another term and Donald Trump is looking better in retrospect -- all severe challenges for Biden in his reelection campaign ahead, according to the poll results.

However, the Washington Post disagrees with the results of the poll. The prominent American daily reported that the poll showing Trump beating Biden by 10 points is likely an “outlier” as the two rivals are in a dead heat according to other polls.

“The Post-ABC poll shows Biden trailing Trump by 10 percentage points at this early stage in the election cycle, although the sizable margin of Trump's lead in this survey is significantly at odds with other public polls that show the general election contest a virtual dead heat. The difference between this poll and others, as well as the unusual makeup of Trump's and Biden's coalitions in this survey, suggest it is probably an outlier,” the daily said.

According to the poll, Trump is favoured by 54 per cent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is second at 15 per cent, down from 25 per cent in May.

"Ramesh Bidhuri A Distraction From...": Rahul Gandhi On MP's Communal Slurs

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi today at an event in Delhi asserted that his party will win the upcoming assembly elections in Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan, and the BJP is in for a "surprise" in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He also spoke about a "very important lesson" the Congress learnt in Karnataka, where they came to power earlier this year, and have adapted accordingly.

"Right now, we are probably winning Telangana, we are certainly winning Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, we are very close in Rajasthan, and we think we will be able to win. That's what BJP is also saying internally," Mr Gandhi can be heard saying in a video posted on X by his party.

The lesson from Karnataka was, the former Congress president said, that the BJP wins elections by distracting and not allowing them to construct their own narrative.

"And so what we did in Karnataka, we fought the election in a way where the BJP could not define the narrative. What you're seeing today, Mr Bidhuri, and then suddenly this Nishikant Dubey, this is all the BJP trying to distract from the idea of the Caste census. They know that it's a fundamental thing the people want, and they don't want to have that discussion," Rahul Gandhi said, referring to BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri's recent communal slurs against BSP MP Danish Ali inside the Lok Sabha.

"Whenever we bring a point to the table, they use this type of stuff to distract, and we have learnt now how to deal with it," Mr Gandhi said, adding that in a situation "where BJP controls the media", they are adapting and controlling the narrative among the people. He gave examples of social welfare schemes in Rajasthan, claiming people back the state government because of them.

Speaking at a conclave organised by the Pratidin Media Network of Assam, Mr Gandhi also said the idea of 'One Nation, One Election' was aimed at distracting from real issues of the people.

"It's one of the BJP's distraction strategies," he asserted.

The main issues in India are concentration of wealth, huge inequality in wealth, massive unemployment, huge unfairness towards the lower caste, OBCs, and tribal communities, and price rise, he said.

"Now, the BJP can't contest those. So 'let's have Mr Bidhuri make a statement. Let's get together and sort of have elections together. Let's change the name of India'. This is all distraction. We know it, we understand it. And we're not going to let them do it," he said.

Rahul Gandhi also alleged that the opposition parties are facing a "financial and media attack", but are doing well despite that.

"Go and ask any businessman in India what happens to them if they support an opposition party. If they were to write a cheque for any opposition party, ask them what happens to them," he said.

The opposition bloc INDIA is not fighting a political party now, Mr Gandhi said, but fighting the Indian state. "We are fighting to defend the idea of India. And that is why we have given our name INDIA," he added.
