Minor Sisters Pregnant After Gang-Rape By Father's Co-Workers In Rajasthan

Two teenage sisters were allegedly raped by two co-workers of their father at a brick kiln in Rajasthan's Alwar district, police said on Monday. Both the girls are pregnant, they said.

The girls' father on Friday lodged a complaint in this regard at NEB police station. In the complaint, he alleged that his daughters, aged 15 and 13, were raped by Sappi and Subhan.

The matter came to light when the elder girl complained of abdominal pain and other health problems. Her parents took her to a doctor, who informed them that she was seven-and-a-half months pregnant, the police said.

"When her parents questioned her, the girl told them that Sappi and Subhan had raped her. She disclosed that they had raped her younger sister as well," the police added.

The girl alleged that the accused had threatened to kill them if they told anyone about the incident.

Superintendent of Police (Alwar) Anand Sharma said an FIR was registered at NEB police station on Friday and the girls' medical examination conducted. The medical test confirmed that both girls are pregnant.

The younger girl is two-and-a-half months pregnant, the police said.

NEB SHO Anil Jain said the matter is being investigated. No arrests have been made in this regard yet.

The family lives near the brick kiln where the girls' father works, he said.

In another case, a minor girl was raped by two men in the district's Bansur area.

Mr Sharma said an FIR was registered in this regard on Friday. The girl alleged that she was kidnapped by the two accused when she was going to school and raped.

The accused also shot a video of the incident and threatened to circulate it on social media if she told anyone about it.

The alleged incident occurred on July 27.

After Uday Kotak, Who? RBI "Conveys View" To Kotak Mahindra Bank Board

The banking regulator is nudging Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. to select someone outside the lender's ranks to succeed billionaire founder Uday Kotak as the next Chief Executive Officer, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Reserve Bank of India has conveyed its view to board members of Kotak Mahindra Bank and Asia's richest financier, they said, asking not to be named, as the communication is private. The regulator is also reviewing whether stakes the banking group holds in two wholly-owned insurance units pose any risks to the firm's stability, the people said.

India has tightened rules limiting bank CEOs' tenure to a maximum of 15 years and has been reviewing the stakes that banks hold in insurers in order to strengthen the nation's financial system. RBI had said in 2021 that the outgoing head should take a three-year cooling period and shall not be "appointed or associated with the bank or its group entities in any capacity, either directly or indirectly," to ensure there is a clean break for the outgoing head from the bank.

Mr Kotak's tenure as CEO of India's fourth-largest private lender ends this year. He has received shareholder approval to subsequently remain on the board. Choosing one of his lieutenants from within the bank's ranks, while he is on the board, will defy the spirit of the regulations, leaving Mr Kotak in a position to potentially influence decisions, according to the people.

A spokesperson for Kotak Mahindra said "current holdings of Mr Kotak in its insurance companies are as per the extant regulatory prescriptions and processes," and declined to comment on the CEO selection. An RBI spokesperson didn't respond to emails seeking comments.

The financier had engaged consulting firm Egon Zehnder to lead a global search for a CEO and its top executives Shanti Ekambaram and K.V.S. Manian were the internal candidates for the job, Bloomberg News reported earlier this year. The RBI has a final say on appointing heads of the nation's lenders though the bank's boards decide on the shortlist of candidates.

Insurance Units

Kotak Mahindra's holdings in units - Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance Co. and Kotak Mahindra General Insurance Co. - are also under review as the central bank assesses the banks' stakes in insurance companies, the people said. It is the only major bank in the country with fully-owned insurance subsidiaries.

While Kotak Mahindra had been working with advisers, including Morgan Stanley, to pare its stakes in the insurers for several months, no transactions have been finalized as of now, people familiar with the information said. A spokesperson for Morgan Stanley declined to comment.

In the past, Kotak had challenged the RBI in court to retain his stake in the lender at a level above the regulator's threshold. The bank had then argued that the central bank wasn't empowered to dictate founders' shareholdings as RBI sought to separate management and ownership functions at lenders to improve corporate governance.

Mr Kotak has a net worth of about $14.5 billion, most of which comes from his 26% stake in the bank, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He has led the bank since it was converted into a lender in 2003 from a non-banking finance company.

"This Level Of Paranoia...": Sudha Murty's Comment Divides Social Media

Author and philanthropist Sudha Murty has set social media abuzz with her comments on her food habits, which have sparked a debate about vegetarianism. Speaking to food writer Kunal Vijayakar on his YouTube channel 'Khaane Me Kya Hai', the wife of Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy revealed that she is a pure vegetarian, and that one of her biggest concerns is the possibility of the same spoon being used for vegetarian and non-veg food. She also said when she travels abroad, she seeks out vegetarian restaurants or prepares her own meals.

Sudha Murty has been trending on Twitter for nearly a week after the comment and users are sharply divided.

"Why is their so much outrage on Sudha Murty being a vegetarian who also carries her food everywhere with her? Is she not allowed to do so? Her choice doesn't matter? How does being Vegetarian becomes Elite or Brahmanwad? How does that becomes Discriminatory?" commented one user.

"What Sudha Murty does today is being practiced by Jains since ancient times. We Jains not only carry our food but also carry our water and water filtering cloth wherever we go. I wear Vegetarian batch on my sleeves," tweeted another.

"I did not understand why so many people went after Sudha Murty? I am not an admirer of Mrs Sudha Murty but frankly she said nothing objectionable here nor is she imposing her dietary choices on others. On the contrary she makes an effort to live by her choices & is not changing others," political analyst Tehseen Poonawalla said in a tweet.

Those who were critical of the comment shared photos of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Sudha Murty's son-in-law, apparently at a barbeque, carrying plates of cooked meat.

"What's amazing here is how the Murty PR team keeps planting these headlines despite knowing fully well that pics like the Rishi bbq will come out. It shows that they are confident that Sudha Murty fans in 2023 are that be dumb & will stand by her even when it makes no sense," Gaurav Sabnis, associate professor at Stevens Institute of Technology in the US tweeted.

"Do vegetarians not understand the concept of soap? This level of paranoia and focus on 'purity' and 'contamination' is 100% a product of Brahminism," wrote another Twitter user.

Ms Murty has so far not reacted to the raging debate on social media, but this is not the first time she has made headlines in recent months.

In May, she was trolled heavily on social media after she told a TV host that an immigration officer in London refused to believe her address was 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the UK's Prime Minister, and asked her if she was "joking". She said she believed it was because of her "simple appearance".

Pooran Breaks Internet With Match-Winning 55-Ball 137 In MLC Final

The inaugural edition of the Major League Cricket concluded on Sunday (Monday IST) with MI New York clinching the title against Seattle Orcas in Dallas. The brand MI continued to display its flawless cricketing skills as it added another trophy to its collection. Asked to bat first, the Orcas posted a good total of 183/9 in 20 overs with Quinton de Kock scoring 87 runs. However, the match turned upside down in the second innings as skipper Nicholas Pooran smashed a whopping total of 137 runs off just 55 balls and guided MI New York to victory by seven wickets.

Pooran's massive knock was laced with 13 sixes and 10 boundaries. The most memorable moment of the match came during the 16th over of MI's chase as the West Indies wicketkeeper thrashed Harmeet Singh for 24 runs. That over included a boundary and a stunning hat-trick of sixes.

With this total, the MI skipper also became the highest run-scorer of the MLC 2023 with 388 runs to his name. His knock of 137* was also the highest individual score by any batter in the tournament.

Notably, MI were one down for zero runs on the board during the chase. However, the skipper took the matter into his own hands and played a fearless innings to take his team to the inaugural title.

Talking about the match, no other batter, apart from de Kock, was able to go past the 30-run mark for Seattle Orcas. The bowling duo of Trent Boult and Rashid Khan broke the backbone of Orcas' batting line-up, with their respective three-wicket hauls. Apart from them, Steven Taylor and David Wiese took one wicket each.

Later, MI New York lost two wickets early as openers Steven Taylor and Shayan Jahangir departed for 0 and 10 runs respectively. However, it was Pooran who remained firm and played an extraordinary knock of 137 runs off 55 balls. Apart from him, Dewald Brevis and Tim David scored 20 and 10 runs respectively.

For Seattle Orcas, Imad Wasim and Wayne Parnell scalped one wicket each.

#SackDravid Trends On Twitter After India's Kohli-Rohit Gamble Backfires

The absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the Indian team for the 2nd ODI left many baffled. As the hunt for the perfect team combination for the forthcoming ODI World Cup continues, the fact that the Indian team management decided to rest the two senior-most players -- Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma -- didn't go down well with many fans and experts. To make the matters worse, India lost the match to West Indies after only managing to put 181 runs on the board. Seeing the Indian team struggle on Saturday, fans started to target head coach Rahul Dravid on Twitter.

India's below-par show in the match saw many question the team's preparation plans for the World Cup. As the No. 4 spot continues to remain a worry for the team, the fact that the team management, including coach Dravid, are making wayward changes with the team, left many fans baffled.

In fact, #SackDravid started to trend on social media as fans started to anticipate another failure at an ICC event.

6biogo1

Here's how fans expressed their disappointment, blaming Dravid:

Dravid, explaining the reason behind Rohit, Kohli's absence from the second ODI team, said that playing the veteran duo would not have given the team 'answers'.

"We will always look into the bigger picture and we cannot think about every single game and series. In the series like this, with only two-three matches to go before the world cup and Asia cup, playing Virat and Rohit would not have given us answers," Dravid said after the match.

"We are not too worried about others opinions, these are the talented boys from our country, they all have performed and come here. It is up to them to take the opportunity when they are given the opportunity. We were little disappointed toward, we knew it was a tricky wicket and not an easy wicket to bat on but we needed to somehow get to 230-240 that could have been a very good score. We lost wickets in the middle and were 50-60 run short," he further explained.

"Have To Applaud...": Ashwin's Interesting Take On Smith's "Non" Run Out

The Day 2 of the ongoing second Ashes Test between England and Australia grabbed a lot of eyeballs after Steve Smith survived a close run-out call. Smith was clearly out of the crease when wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow had hit the stumps. However, Smith was declared not out by the third umpire, as per the MCC rules. This decision invited a lot of controversy as many cricketers and fans expressed their opinion regarding the same. However, India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin backed third umpire Nitin Menon for making the "right decision".

Taking to Twitter, Ashwin wrote, "What's with the Ashes and substitute fielders. #ashes2023 #ashes2005 #garypratt #georgeeahlam. Have to applaud Nitin Menon for making the right decision."

On the day two of the fifth Ashes series, Smith was saved from a run out on the "benefit of the doubt" to batter. At first, it seemed that Smith was short of his ground. But, after seeing replays, umpire Nitin Menon ruled that the bail was not completely dislodged from both grooves of Jonny Bairstow until Smith was in his crease. Bairstow had knock off a bail with his arm and when the ball reached on his grooves, Smith was in the crease.

Under the Laws, the bail has to be completely removed. Law 29.1 states: "The wicket is broken when at least one bail is completely removed from the top of the stumps, or one or more stumps is removed from the ground."

Tom Smith's Cricket Umpiring and Scoring, MCC's Official Interpretation of the Laws of Cricket, adds: "For the purposes of dismissal - a bail has been removed at the moment that both ends of it leave their grooves."

Talking about the match, Smith's 71 helped Australia recover from a batting collapse as the tourists frustrated England by establishing a first-innings lead in the fifth and final Ashes Test at The Oval on Friday.

Australia were eventually bowled out with what became the last ball of the second day for 295, 12 runs ahead of England's 283. It looked as if England would enjoy a sizeable advantage as veteran seamer Stuart Broad sparked a slump that saw Australia decline from 115-2 to 185-7.

Joe Biden Urged To Resolve 195-Year US Green Card Backlog For Indians

A group of US lawmakers has urged the Joe Biden and his administration to take executive action to make priority dates current for Green Card applicants from India to reduce the 195-year-long wait period and backlog which has left them in a constant state of limbo.

Led by Congressmen Raja Krishnamoorthi and Larry Bucshon, the bipartisan group of 56 lawmakers sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas requesting the administration take executive action to provide relief to high-skilled employment-based visa holders.

In their letter, the US lawmakers also appealed to the administration to mark all dates for filing of employment-based visa applications in the Bureau of Consular Affairs' published Employment-Based Visa Bulletin as "current".

A Green Card, known officially as a Permanent Resident Card, is a document issued to immigrants to the US as evidence that the bearer has been granted the privilege of residing permanently.

The current situation surrounding the seven per cent country cap on employment-based Green Card allocation is causing severe repercussions, particularly for countries such as India, where the backlog has reached an astonishing 195 years, said Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS USA) in a separate appeal to the US President Joe Biden.

This backlog disproportionately affects Indian tech professionals, who constitute a significant portion of the highly skilled STEM talent and US-educated graduates, playing a crucial role in maintaining the United States' competitive edge in the technology industries, it said.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.

However, the backlog has created a significant barrier, hindering these talented individuals from contributing meaningfully to the country's growth and innovation, the FIIDS observed.

This year, the FIIDS has made several efforts in addressing the concerns of the immigrant Indian community, in particular those related to Green Card and H-1B visas.

"We started efforts to get relief to Indian H-1Bs who are stuck in Green Card processing. We launched a change petition, we are approaching representatives, various other organisations and influencers. We are reaching out to the Bureau of consular services in the state department as well as the USCIS in the DHS to take administrative action to make the priority dates current for green card applicants," Khanderao Kand from FIIDS said.

The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in speciality occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise.

Technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year from countries like India and China.

The lawmakers in their letter said that marking all dates as "current" would allow employment-based applications to be filed regardless of applicants' country-based priority date. This would provide relief to thousands of individuals attempting to legally navigate the US immigration system and could potentially also make some eligible for employment authorisation documents to change jobs, start businesses, and travel abroad to visit family without penalty, it said.

Without this administrative action, which was also used during the administration of President George W Bush, individuals are left in a constant state of limbo and, in some cases, are punished for utilising a pathway of legal immigration by being forced to stay with one company or organisation due to their Green Card status, they said in the letter.

"I'm proud to join my colleagues in urging the Biden administration to address bureaucratic delays in our legal immigration system that are holding back our economy while leaving so many families in limbo," Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi said.

"By using its authority under the existing law, the administration can ease this burden while strengthening our economy and helping to create jobs," he said.

Congressman Bucshon said, unfortunately, due to bureaucratic red tape in "our nation's legal immigration system, they are caught in the visa backlog and don't have the flexibility to change jobs, start businesses, and travel abroad without penalty".

"I believe that it's important for the administration to act within the current law to make it easier for these legal immigrants to navigate our immigration system and continue making a positive contribution to our nation and our economy," Bucshon said.

President of Immigration Voice Aman Kapoor said that "this commonsense measure proposed in the letter by Congressmen Krishnamoorthi and Bucshon would be an absolute game changer to provide basic human rights such as the ability to change jobs and travel for nearly one million high skilled immigrants whose status in the US can end at any moment and is entirely dependent upon the whims of their employer".

The entire basis for this problem is a "discriminatory" immigration system that requires Indian nationals to have to wait "200 years for a Green Card while people from 150 other countries have no wait at all", Mr Kapoor said.

"We now call on the Biden administration to do the right thing and heed the call of this rare bipartisan letter and give high-skilled immigrants here for over a decade the same rights to work and travel that people being paroled into the US for the first time just this week have," he said.

"We are no less deserving of basic human rights and fairness than anyone else and we hope the Biden administration will agree," Mr Kapoor said.

KJo's industry friends and colleagues have also given a shout out to the director who made a comeback after seven years. Karan Johar's BFF, actress Kajol has declared that Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is a “must-watch.” She added, “Karan Johar, you are back.” Take a look at Kajol's post here:

Actress Parineeti Chopra too wrote a heartwarming note for Karan Johar on Instagram Stories. She said, “Love, love and only love for you, Karan Johar. This is why you are the one and only, the OG, the legend! All the best, RV [Ranveer Singh] and Aloo [Alia Bhatt].” Replying to the message, KJo simply wrote, “Pari.”

Shanaya Kapoor, who will make her Bollywood debut with Dharma Production's Bedhadak, has declared that “there's nothing like a Karan Johar film.” She added, “No one does it better than you, and no one can create the magic of romance like you. Rocky our Rani reminded me of the love, and happiness I feel when I watch movies. And this has it all! Family, tradition, emotions, laughs, songs and most of all Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh together on screen, artists I forever will look up to. Thank you to the team of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani for creating this wholesome and extremely special experience — we needed this.”

Film critic Saibal Chatterjee, in his review for NDTV, said, “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, written by Ishita Moitra, Shashank Khaitan and Sumit Roy, aims to deliver a mix of hearty laughs and 'useful' marital advice. It makes rather heavy weather of both although in the matter of taking cracks at unmasking patriarchy, outdated notions of masculinity and cultural chauvinism, it does deliver a few pointed home truths.”

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani also stars Jaya Bachchan, Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi.

Ghostbusters, Spider-Man Are Latest Films Impacted By Hollywood Strike

Sony Pictures is the latest movie studio shaking up its release schedule amid the ongoing work stoppage by Hollywood writers and actors. Gran Turismo, a car-racing film originally scheduled for a wide release on Aug. 11, will instead get sneak previews for two weekends before coming to more theaters on Aug. 25, a strategy designed to cope with strike-related prohibitions on actors engaging in their usual publicity tours.

“The stars can't promote the movie, but the audience can,” Sony said in an email announcing the changes on Friday.

An untitled Ghostbusters sequel previously scheduled for December has been pushed back to March of next year. Kraven the Hunter, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name and previously scheduled for October, is now moving to August 30, 2024.

The release date for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, was pulled. The latest in Sony's series of animated films based on the character had been scheduled for March.

“The studio is considering several dates depending on how long the strike lasts,” the company said of the picture.

Strike rules prevent actors represented by the SAG-Aftra union from participating in red carpet premieres, press interviews and film festivals to promote their projects. That's upending marketing strategies, and stands to dent the box office performance of films released during the strike.

Delays are especially unwelcome news for theater chains including AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. and Cineworld Group Plc that are desperate for more films to accelerate their recovery from pandemic-induced lockdowns.

Walt Disney Co. said earlier this week that it was delaying Poor Things, a film starring Emma Stone, until December. Bloomberg News earlier reported that the company was reviewing its release strategy for several pictures.

Writers and actors are seeking better compensation and benefits from studios as well as protections from artificial intelligence taking over their jobs. They have been on strike since May and July respectively, which has brought many Hollywood productions to a standstill.

Meat Allergy Cases Linked To Tick Bites Grow In US, Warning Issued

A new report by the national public health agency of the United States said that the rate of Americans developing a rare meat allergy from tick bites is rising. The data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that this allergy may have already impacted as many as 450,000 people.

"Between 2010 and 2022, there were more than 110,000 suspected cases of alpha-gal syndrome identified. However, because the diagnosis of alpha-gal syndrome requires a positive diagnostic test and a clinical exam, and some individuals with alpha-gal syndrome may not get tested, it is estimated that as many as 450,000 people might have been affected by AGS in the United States," the report said.

The studies published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report show that many healthcare providers in the United States are not familiar with an emerging and potentially life-threatening allergic condition called alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), also known as the red-meat allergy or the tick bite meat allergy. Of those aware of AGS, knowledge about diagnosis and management is low.

In one study, 1,500 family/general practitioners, internists, paediatricians, nurse practitioners (NPs), and physician assistants (PAs) across the country were surveyed, and results showed that nearly half of respondents had not heard of AGS, approximately one-third reported that they were 'not too confident' in their ability to diagnose or manage patients with AGS, and five percent felt 'very confident' in their ability.

What is alpha-gal syndrome (AGS)?

According to the CDC, Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is a serious, potentially life-threatening allergic condition. AGS is also called alpha-gal allergy, red meat allergy, or tick-bite meat allergy. AGS is not caused by an infection. AGS symptoms occur after people eat red meat or are exposed to other products containing alpha-gal.

A CDC report showed that between 2010 and 2022, more than 110,000 suspected cases of AGS were identified. However, cases of AGS are not nationally notifiable to the CDC, so it is not known how many cases of AGS exist in the United States. Additional data and research are needed to understand how many people are affected by this condition.

Mumbai-Based CEO Says He Paid Rs 100 For 500 Metre Auto Ride In Bengaluru

Needless to say, travelling by autorickshaws in Bengaluru is an expensive affair. Many times, auto drivers in Bengaluru end up quoting exorbitant fares for short rides, upsetting commuters. In a similar instance, the CEO of a Mumbai-based company took to X, formerly Twitter, to share his experience of travelling in an auto, in Bengaluru.

Mandar Natekar, co-founder and CEO of NeuralGarage, complained that auto drivers in the city don't charge fares by the meter. He further said that he had to shell out Rs 100 for a mere 500-meter ride in the city.

He wrote, ''In this photo, you will see the most ornamental thing in Bengaluru. The great Auto Meter. So expensive that it never gets used. I just paid 100Rs for a 500 mtrs ride. To give perspective, in Mumbai 100Rs is the meter fare for approx 9 km.''

He also added a picture of the vehicle's meter and called this experience a "peak Bengaluru" moment.

See the tweet here:

Twitter users resonated with his tweet and shared similar experiences. Vijay Koshy, president, TVF, commented, ''It's practically the same for every city outside Mumbai. Chennai is notorious for its auto rides.''

Replying to him, Mr. Natekar said, ''It is ridiculous, to say the least, but seems like this highway robbery is not legit. No one bothers.''

A second user wrote ''Very few cities have auto-meter fare system. Mumbai and Palakkad are the only two cities I am aware of. Nothing can be done either.''

A third added, ''Mumbai is the only place in India, where rickshaws function properly on meter. The rest of India is all about loot.''

A fourth remarked, ''Count your blessings. Most of the time, they don't wish to go anywhere.''

Last year, the Karnataka government raised the metre fares to Rs 30 from Rs 25 for the first two kilometres and the base price per kilometre to Rs 15 from Rs 13.

Explained: Russia And North Korea's Growing Ties Amid Face-Off With US

Russia's defence minister was photographed this week viewing banned North Korean ballistic missiles with leader Kim Jong Un at a military expo in Pyongyang, signalling deeper ties between the two countries as they face off with the United States.

As Russia's isolation over its war in Ukraine has grown, it has seen increasing value in North Korea. For North Korea's part, relations with Russia haven't always been as warm as they were during the heady days of the Soviet Union, but now the country is reaping clear benefits from Moscow's need for friends.

Here's how North Korea-Russia relations began, and how they are becoming closer:

POLITICAL BACKING

Communist North Korea was formed in the early days of the Cold War with the backing of the Soviet Union. North Korea later battled the South and its U.S. and United Nations allies to a stalemate in the 1950-1953 Korean War with extensive aid from China and the Soviet Union.

North Korea was heavily reliant on Soviet aid for decades, and when the Soviet Union collapsed in the 1990s, it contributed to a deadly famine in the North.

Pyongyang's leaders have tended to try to use Beijing and Moscow to balance each other. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un initially had a relatively cool relationship with Russia and China, which both joined the United States in imposing strict sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear tests.

After his country's last nuclear test in 2017, Kim took steps to repair ties.

He met Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2019 for the first time in a summit in the Russian city of Vladivostok.

In October, Kim sent a birthday greeting to Putin, congratulating him for "crushing the challenges and threats of the United States".

In a message for Russia's National Day in June, Kim vowed to "hold hands" with Putin and bolster strategic cooperation.

Russia has joined China in opposing new sanctions on North Korea, blocking a U.S.-led push and publicly splitting the U.N. Security Council (UNSC) for the first time since it started punishing Pyongyang in 2006.

UKRAINE WAR SUPPORT

North Korea has reciprocated with public support for Moscow after Russia invaded Ukraine. It was one of the only countries to recognise the independence of breakaway Ukrainian regions, and it expressed support for Russia's proclaimed annexation of parts of Ukraine.

The United States has accused North Korea of providing arms to Russia for the war effort, including a "significant" number of artillery shells, as well as a shipment of infantry rockets and missiles to the private Russian military company, the Wagner Group.

Both Russia and North Korea have denied those claims, but this week promised to deepen defence cooperation.

"Moscow's 'special military operation' in Ukraine has ushered in a new geopolitical reality in which the Kremlin and (North Korea) may become increasingly close, perhaps even to the point of resurrecting the quasi-alliance relationship that had existed during the Cold War," Artyom Lukin, a professor at Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok, wrote in a report for 38 North.

It is notable Pyongyang has begun using the new phrase "tactical and strategic collaboration" to describe its relationship with Russia, he added.

ECONOMIC TIES

Last year, Russia and North Korea restarted train travel for the first time since railway journeys were cut during the COVID pandemic with an unusually opulent cargo - 30 grey thoroughbred horses.

Shortly after that Russia also resumed oil exports to North Korea, United Nations data shows, the first such shipments reported since 2020.

The vast majority of North Korea's trade goes through China, but Russia is a potentially important partner as well, particularly for providing oil, experts said. Moscow has denied breaking U.N. sanctions, but Russian tankers have been accused of helping evade caps on exporting oil to North Korea and sanctions monitors have reported labourers remain in Russia despite a ban.

Russian officials have openly discussed "working on political arrangements" to employ 20,000 to 50,000 North Korean labourers, despite U.N. Security Council resolutions that ban such arrangements.

Russian officials and leaders in the breakaway regions in Ukraine have also discussed the possibility of having North Korean workers help rebuild those war-torn areas.

Arjun Tendulkar Sets Internet On Fire With His Latest Six-Pack Abs Pic

IPL 2023 turned out to be really memorable for Arjun Tendulkar as the young pacer made his debut in the cash-rich league with Mumbai Indians. The son of legendary Sachin Tendulkar, Arjun had a mixed outing in IPL 2023 as he took three wickets in four matches but also leaked 92 runs. Currently, the 23-year-old pacer is playing for South Zone in the Deodhar Trophy 2023. Apart from hustling on the field, Arjun is also working on his fitness, which can be clearly seen in his Instagram story.

Taking to the social media platform, Arjun shared a shirtless mirror selfie, where he can be seen flaunting his six-pack abs. The trend of keeping a chiseled in the Indian cricket camp has been started by star batter Virat Kohli and many other players like KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and now even Arjun have followed the footsteps of the former captain.

hvoh9r08

Earlier in June, Arjun was called-up by the BCCI for a 20-day camp at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Arjun, who plays first-class cricket for Goa and made his IPL debut in the last edition for Mumbai Indians, was summoned for the camp, beginning in August.

Tendulkar has played three IPL games and didn't look out of place but asked the rationale behind his selection, the BCCI source said, "Arjun already has a Ranji Trophy century. A left-arm pacer who bowls between early and mid 130 kmph and bats left-handed. He brings in variety."

"It is not just about numbers but also about potential. He is 23 and has time to develop is what this (senior selection) committee thinks. Else, they wouldn't have picked him. Yes, he only has 12 wickets from seven first-class games but he has shown a certain degree of ability and coaches will work on that," the BCCI source added.

Talking about the Deodhar Trophy, the junior Tendulkar has been included in the South Zone, which is being led by batter Mayank Agarwal. He is a part of the South zone pace attack which comprises Karnataka new ball duo of Vidwath Kaverappa and Vyshak Vijaykumar along with V Koushik.

Arjun was Goa team's joint highest wicket-taker with eight scalps from seven games.

Japanese Mayor Apologises For Flyer Issued To Pregnant Women

A Japanese mayor has apologised after a public outcry over a flyer issued to pregnant women advising them on what most irritated husbands after their wives became mothers, an official said Thursday.

The flyer included a section titled "Advice from fathers to you", which included answers to a survey of new fathers conducted five years ago in the city of Onomichi in western Hiroshima prefecture.

Officials have been sharing the responses with expectant women ever since, apparently thinking it would be helpful to know what new fathers liked and disliked about their wives' behaviour after giving birth.

Some men said they were annoyed when their wives became "irritated for unknown reasons" or could "not do housekeeping work" because they were too busy taking care of the baby.

Japanese women have long struggled against deeply entrenched gender stereotypes, and there was a furious reaction when the document was shared on social media this week.

That prompted Onomichi Mayor Yuko Hiratani to publish an apology on Tuesday and retracted the flyer, city official Akira Takahashi told AFP on Thursday.

"The document is against the feelings of people who are raising children including pregnant women and mothers with newborn babies, offending many people," the mayor said in a statement.

"The document included expressions that promote fixed roles based on gender, so we stopped delivering it. We deeply apologise."

Complaints from the public have continued, however, partly due to local media reports on the issue.

"Why wasn't it 'from senior fathers to new fathers'? Why don't they teach 'what you should never do to your wife before and after giving birth'?" one person messaged on Twitter, which is being rebranded as X.

By Wednesday evening, the city had "received 156 emails and 51 phone calls, most of which expressed criticism about the document", Takahashi said.

"We are currently reviewing all relevant documents to make necessary changes so as to address various ideas and thoughts about family issues."

US Teen Sets Fire To Hotel Sofa After Fight With Mother, Arrested

A 16-year-old girl was arrested on Tuesday after she set a couch on fire at a hotel following a fight with her mother. Hundreds of guests were evacuated early in the morning, Ocala Police Department said.

The police informed that Isabella Faith Adeline Garcia and her mother were visiting the Ocala Hilton on SW 36th Avenue from Peoria, Illinois when the incident took place at about 3:20 am.

Ms Garcia called 911 approximately three to five minutes after starting the fire, Fox News reported.

"I got into a fight with my mom," she told dispatchers, according to the affidavit. "I got into a fight with my mom and then she got another room. She wasn't talking to me and then she wouldn't answer any of my calls or text messages. I don't know. It was like this couch in the lobby ... I don't know what to do."

"I'm scared. I don't know what to do," the girl added.

"Units arrived at the nine-story hotel to find audible and visual alarms, an active sprinkler system, and Ocala Police Department members assisting guests in evacuating the premises," Ocala Fire Rescue said in a statement on Facebook.

The firefighters encountered moderate smoke as they entered the lobby of the hotel.

Per staff's indications, firefighters made their way down a first-floor hallway near the banquet rooms. As they approached, smoke conditions worsened. Using a thermal imaging camera, crews located the seat of the fire. In conjunction with the sprinkler system, crews used a water can to smother the flames, which consumed a couch and scorched an adjacent wall.

The fire was extinguished entirely within seven minutes of arrival, the police said.

After a brief investigation, the police arrested the 16-year-old girl.

"The damage to the hotel is estimated to be a couple hundred thousand dollars," Ocala Police said. "Thankfully, no one was injured ... and hotel guests were able to return to their rooms the same morning."

"The 16-year-old girl who allegedly started this fire within the Hilton hotel was arrested for arson," the police informed.

"How Middle Class Survives In Bengaluru": Driver's Overcharging Upsets Man

A Mumbai software engineer visiting Bengaluru booked an Ola auto from the City Station, but the journey turned awry when the driver cancelled the ride and demanded Rs 100 extra to take him to the destination.

Prashant Yadav, a senior frontend engineer at Razorpay, tweeted about his experience, which sparked a wave of anger among other such users.

"Got down at Banglore City station, booked an Ola auto, auto walla called me near him, cancelled the auto, and said sir Rs100 extra do what you see in Ola fir jaunga (pay me Rs 100 more than what the Ola fare is, and then I'll take you to your destination)," he wrote on Twitter.

"I wonder how the middle class survives in the city as they consider everyone wealthy," Mr Yadav added.

This tweet has opened a floodgate of comments from city dwellers and people who have been to the city. They talked about their experiences, which were somewhat comparable to Mr Yadav's.

"For the first time in Bangalore, a normal auto guy quoted Rs 1000 and was ready for the last price of 900. I booked an Ola auto, and this autowala was nice and dropped me at Rs 350, the same price as displayed on Ola. Some more cases, but not so nice. I have now stopped taking Auto," commented one user.

"They tend to do this a lot near stations; they take the metro if possible and book from there. They just want to scam you into thinking you're new. It has a lot less daily usage than many other cities," wrote another user.

"It's actually high time for people to consider taking bikes, cars, etc. if they are planning to live there even for a few years. It won't harm much, unlike how it's harming people daily, like in your case," commented a third user.

Elon Musk Mocks 'Barbie' Over Its Anti-Patriarchy Message

Barbie may be breaking records at the box office, but not everyone loved Greta Gerwig's movie. The movie has been criticized by many as being anti-man. Now, billionaire Elon Musk voiced his opinion about the film.

Tesla boss wrote, "If you take a shot every time Barbie says the word 'patriarchy', you will pass out before the movie ends."

Mr Musk was responding to a Barbenheimer meme that compared Twitter to Barbie and his new X name for his social network to Oppenheimer.

See the post here:

Indian TV actor Juhi Parmar also recently took a dig at the Barbie movie.

In an Instagram post, the 'Kumkum' star talked about how shocked she was by the film's 'inappropriate language and sexual connotations' and had to walk out after 10-15 minutes.

As per Juhi, a lot of parents followed suit as she accused the makers of misleading the audience.

"10 minutes into the movie, inappropriate language, sexual connotations, and I was anxiously running out of the theatre wondering what had I just exposed my child to.... The language and content in your film Barbie is inappropriate even for children 13 and above. I want to ask, why make a movie that is such an essential part of a child's life and then have content in it which is so inappropriate for them? Why did you break the perfect illusions of Barbie? I wish I could erase the memory of this film and continue believing in a picture-perfect Barbie for my child, who has a collection of yours and love you so much. I so wish - A concerned and disappointed parent," she wrote.

The Greta Gerwig-directed film stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the lead roles, as Barbie and Ken, respectively.

It was released in theatres on July 21.

Watch: US Residents Seen Hoarding Rice After India Announces Export Ban

India announced a ban on the export of non-Basmati white rice on Thursday, July 20. India is the world's leading rice exporter and, as per reports, the Ministry initiated this ban to regulate the prices of rice in the domestic market. Meanwhile, the ban would affect prices in the international market and make them rise due to a shortage in supply. This is especially true for countries in Africa, Southeast Asia, as well as our neighbours Pakistan and Bangladesh. While it is not clear that the US would directly be affected by the ban, there was a panic buying situation at the supermarkets in the country. A couple of videos that surfaced on social media showed how hordes of people are visiting the markets to purchase rice in bulk in fear of the rice export ban by India. Take a look:

As Deadline Approaches, Afghan Beauty Salons Prepare For Closure

Thousands of beauty parlours across Afghanistan were due to close permanently Tuesday following an order by Taliban authorities that cuts off one of the few revenue streams available to women, as well as a cherished space for socialising.

Since seizing power in August 2021, the Taliban government has barred girls and women from high schools and universities, banned them from parks, funfairs and gyms, and ordered them to cover up in public.

But an order issued last month forces the closure of thousands of salons nationwide run by women -- often the only source of income for households -- and outlaws one of the few remaining opportunities for them to socialise away from home.

"We used to come here to spend time talking about our future together. Now even this right has been taken away from us," said Bahara, a customer at a Kabul salon.

"Women are not allowed to enter entertainment places, so what can we do? Where can we go to enjoy ourselves? Where can we gather to meet each other?"

Last week, security officials shot into the air and used firehoses in Kabul to disperse dozens of women protesting against the order.

In late June, the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice gave salons until Tuesday to close down, saying the grace period would allow them to use up stock.

It said it made the order because extravagant sums spent on makeovers caused hardship for poor families and that some treatments at the salons were un-Islamic.

Too much make-up prevented women from proper ablutions for prayer, the ministry said, while eyelash extensions and hair weaving were also forbidden.

A copy of the order seen by AFP said it was "based on verbal instruction from the supreme leader" Hibatullah Akhundzada.

Beauty parlours mushroomed across Kabul and other Afghan cities in the 20 years that United States-led forces occupied the country.

They were seen as a safe place to gather and socialise away from men and provided vital business opportunities for women.

Thousands of female government workers either lost their jobs when the Taliban took over or are being paid to stay at home.

But the beauty parlour ban will see another 60,000 women lose their income from work at some 12,000 salons, according to the Afghanistan Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

A report to the UN's Human Rights Council last month by Richard Bennett, the special rapporteur for Afghanistan, said the plight of women and girls in the country "was among the worst in the world".

"Grave, systematic and institutionalized discrimination against women and girls is at the heart of Taliban ideology and rule, which also gives rise to concerns that they may be responsible for gender apartheid," Bennett said.
