Apple Likely To Unveil Mixed Reality Headset: All About The Technology

Tech giant Apple is expected to unveil its long-awaited mixed reality headsets at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 5. The company has not announced any details about the new hardware, only urging developers to "code new worlds" in a blog post. The product has generated a lot of buzz online, including the operating system that is expected to feature on the mixed reality headset. The technology, though fairly new, breaks down the border between the real and the virtual worlds.

What is mixed reality?

The technology combines both real and virtual entities to produce new simulated environments and visuals where physical and digital objects interact in real-time. According to Intel, with mixed reality (MR), users can play a virtual video game, grab your real world water bottle, and smack an imaginary character from the game with the bottle.

Microsoft called it "the next wave in computing" following mainframes, PCs, and smartphones that combines both Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality.

MR will provide stunning holographic representations of people, high fidelity holographic 3D models, and the real world around them.

Difference between virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality

When virtual reality (VR) arrived, it took the tech world by storm. People were fascinated by the idea of transposing themselves into a different but virtual world. Though the three technologies seem similar, there are little differences that set them apart.

VR is fully immersive, tricking human senses into thinking that a person is in a different environment or world apart from the real world. Users who want to experience VR have to use head-mounted display (HMD) or headset tethered to a console of PC.

According to Intel, augmented reality (AR) overlays digital information on real-world elements. A good example is Pokemon GO, which keeps the real world central but enhances it with other digital details.

Mixed reality combines these two elements to give users a holistic experience using next-generation sensing and imaging technologies. Users can interact with a virtual environment using your own hands - like Tony Stark, who in some Marvel films is seen creating a virtual model of a place and analysing is by zooming in, zooming out, picking up the virtual pieces and taking a closer look.

The applications of mixed reality

Like every other emerging technology, mixed reality too can give a boost to several sectors, such as education and medical.

MR can make learning more interesting and interactive via 3D projections and simulations. It can also help medical professionals and practitioners view and share patient records and data in a more interactive manner.

Using mixed reality, people can generate holograms to show scenes or objects or avatars, eradicating a physical need.

Beijing Blames US "Provocation" For South China Sea Fighter Jet Incident

Beijing blamed US "provocation" Wednesday for an incident last week when a Chinese plane crossed in front of an American surveillance aircraft over the South China Sea.

"The United States' long-term and frequent sending of ships and planes to conduct close surveillance on China seriously harms China's national sovereignty and security," foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said when asked about the incident.

"This kind of provocative, dangerous activity is the cause of the security issues on the seas," Mao said, calling on Washington to "immediately stop this form of dangerous provocation".

"China will continue to take all necessary steps to resolutely protect its own sovereignty and security," she said.

The US military said Tuesday a Chinese fighter pilot performed an "unnecessarily aggressive maneuver" near an American surveillance aircraft operating over the South China Sea on Friday.

Video footage declassified and released by the US military shows a Chinese fighter plane crossing in front of the American aircraft, which can be seen shaking from the resulting turbulence.

The Chinese plane "flew directly in front of and within 400 feet of the nose of the RC-135, forcing the US aircraft to fly through its wake turbulence", the Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) said in a statement.

"The RC-135 was conducting safe and routine operations over the South China Sea in international airspace, in accordance with international law," it said.

The Pentagon said the incident was part of a pattern of behaviour by China.

It comes at a time of frayed ties between Washington and Beijing over issues including Taiwan and an alleged Chinese spy balloon that was shot down after traversing the United States earlier this year.

Watch: Emotional Rayudu Breaks Down In Tears After Winning 6th IPL Title

Chennai Super Kings' middle-order batter Ambati Rayudu on Monday said he can afford to smile for the rest of his life after a "fairytale finish" to his cricketing career. Rayudu, who had announced his decision to stop playing IPL just before the final against Gujarat Titans, said his hard work for the last 30 years has paid rich dividends. "It's a fairytale finish. I couldn't have asked for more. I'm fortunate to have played in really great sides. I can smile for the rest of my life. All the hard work I've done in the last 30 years, I'm happy I got to finish on this note.

"I would really like to thank my family, my father. Without them this wouldn't have been possible," said Rayudu after CSK beat Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the IPL final.

CSK all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who hit a six and four in the last two balls to seal the record-equalling fifth title for CSK, dedicated the win to skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who probably played his last IPL game on Monday.

"Feels amazing, winning my fifth title in front of my home crowd. I'm from Gujarat, and it's a special feeling. This crowd has been amazing. They were waiting for rain to stop till late night, I'd like to say a big congratulations to the CSK fans who came to support us.

"I'd like to dedicate this win to a special member of the CSK side, MS Dhoni," he said.

"I was just thinking I need to swing hard, as much as I can. Where the ball will go, I was not thinking about that, just looking to swing hard. I was backing myself and looking to hit straight, because I know Mohit can bowl those slower balls," Jadeja added.

How 1.1 Million Oil Barrels Will Be Salvaged From Decaying Tanker In Yemen

Operations to salvage 1.1 million barrels of oil from a decaying tanker moored off Yemen's coast will soon begin after a technical support ship arrived on site on Tuesday, the United Nations said.

UN officials have been warning for years that the Red Sea and Yemen's coastline was at risk as the Safer tanker could spill four times as much oil as the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster off Alaska.

The Ndeavor tanker, with a technical team from Boskalis/SMIT, is in place at the Safer tanker off the coast of Yemen's Ras Isa, the U.N. Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen David Gressley said on Twitter from on board the Ndeavor.

The war in Yemen caused suspension of maintenance operations on the Safer in 2015. The UN has warned its structural integrity has significantly deteriorated and it is at risk of exploding.

The UN launched a fundraising drive, even starting a crowdfunding campaign, to raise the $129 million needed to remove the oil from the Safer and transfer it to a replacement tanker, the Nautica, which set sail from China in early April.

The salvage operation cannot be paid for by the sale of the oil because it is not clear who owns it, the UN has said.

"Work at sea will start very soon. Additional funding is still important to finish the process," the UN said on its Yemen Twitter account.

Yemen has been mired in conflict since the Iran-aligned Houthi group ousted the government from the capital Sanaa in late 2014. A Saudi Arabia-led military coalition intervened in 2015 aiming to restore the government.

Peace initiatives have seen increased momentum since Riyadh and Tehran in March agreed to restore diplomatic ties severed in 2016.

Chinese Mission With First Civilian Reaches Space Station

China sent three astronauts to its Tiangong space station on Tuesday, putting a civilian into orbit for the first time as it pursues plans to send a crewed mission to the Moon by 2030.

The world's second-largest economy has invested billions of dollars in its military-run space programme in a push to catch up with the United States and Russia.

The Shenzhou-16 crew took off atop a Long March 2F rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China at 9:31 am (0131 GMT), AFP journalists saw.

They docked at the space station's Tianhe core module on Tuesday afternoon, more than six hours after taking off, state broadcaster CCTV said.

The launch was a "complete success" and the "astronauts are in good condition", said Zou Lipeng, director of the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center.

Dozens of employees from the space programme, many of whom live year-round on the huge site, attended the launch, snapping selfies with the rocket in the background.

Children played as they waited for the launch, some waving Chinese flags as they sat on their parents' shoulders.

Spectators let out a loud "wow", shouting "good luck" and waving as the rocket took off in a cloud of ochre smoke.

Leading its crew is commander Jing Haipeng on his fourth mission, as well as engineer Zhu Yangzhu and Beihang University professor Gui Haichao, the first Chinese civilian in space.

China was the third country to put humans in orbit and Tiangong is the crown jewel of its space programme, which has also landed robotic rovers on Mars and the Moon.

Shenzhou-16 is the first mission to Tiangong since it entered its "application and development" stage, authorities said.

The crew will meet their three colleagues from the Shenzhou-15 flight, who have been at the station for six months and who will return to Earth in the coming days.

Shenzhou-16's crew will carry out a number of experiments during the mission, including in "high-precision space time-frequency systems", general relativity, and into the origin of life, China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) spokesperson Lin Xiqiang told reporters on Monday.

The space station was resupplied with drinking water, clothing, food and propellant this month in preparation for Shenzhou-16's arrival.

One expert told AFP that Tuesday's mission represented "a regular crew rotation flight", but even that was significant.

"Accumulating depth of experience in human spaceflight operations is important and doesn't involve new spectacular milestones all the time," said Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer and astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

'Heavenly palace'

China's "space dream" has been put into overdrive under President Xi Jinping, and the construction of a moon base is planned.

"The overall goal is to achieve China's first crewed landing on the Moon by 2030 and carry out lunar scientific exploration and related technological experiments," the CMSA's Lin said.

The final module of Tiangong -- which means "heavenly palace" -- successfully docked with the core structure last year.

The station carries several pieces of cutting-edge scientific equipment, state news agency Xinhua reported, including "the world's first space-based cold atomic clock system".

Tiangong is expected to remain in low Earth orbit at an altitude between 400 and 450 kilometres (250 and 280 miles) for at least 10 years.

It is constantly crewed by rotating teams of three astronauts.

China has been effectively excluded from the International Space Station since 2011, when the United States banned NASA from engaging with the country -- pushing Beijing to develop its own orbital outpost.

China's space agency reiterated on Monday it is actively seeking international cooperation in the project.

China plans to send two crewed space missions to Tiangong every year, according to the CMSA.

The next will be Shenzhou-17, with an expected launch in October.

Video: Man Breaks Beauty Pageant Winner's Crown As Wife Places Second

In a shocking incident, the husband of a beauty pageant contestant climbed onto the stage, snatched the winner's crown and smashed it to the ground after his wife was awarded the second place. The incident took place at an LGBTQ+ beauty pageant in Brazil on Saturday, as per local news outlet Globo. One of the attendees recorded the man's action and the clip soon appeared on various social media platforms. The man's outburst took place as the winner is announced at the Miss Gay Mato Grosso 2023 pageant.

The video shows the crowning ceremony and a woman approaching the two finalists - Nathally Becker and Emannuelly Belini - to announce the winner. As she moved the crown on top of the two contestants before the big reveal, the enthusiastic crowd cheered both of them.

Ms Belini was finally chosen as the winner and the woman proceeded to place the shiny tiara on her head. But before the ceremony could complete, the runner-up contestant's husband interrupted it.

The hot-headed husband pulled away the crown from the woman's hands and hurled it on the stage floor. He was also seen yelling and pulling his wife away from the winner as a shocked audience gasped.

Watch the video:

The man then picked up the crown and heaved it to the ground again, breaking it to pieces.

New York Post said the event's security team intervened and pulled the man backstage.

Pageant coordinator Malone Haenisch later released a statement in which he said, "He did not consider the result to be fair and caused all this inconvenience and damage."

"We vehemently condemn the incident that occurred at the time of the crowning of the elected Miss when the partner of Miss Cuiaba, who was classified in second place, invaded the stage and aggressively destroyed the crown," he added.

The organiser insisted that the pageant's judges were fair in declaring Belini as the winner.

Musk Praises China's "Advanced" Space Programme Ahead Of Beijing Visit

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said that China space programme is "far more advanced" than most people realise. Mr Musk was reacting to a tweet of Chris Hadfield, a former astronaut of the Canadian Space Agency, who quoted a news report to say that China will be able to set foot on the Moon by 2030. The report was published in Chinese state-run publication CGTN and cited Wu Weiren, the chief designer of the country' lunar exploration programme as saying that achieving the 2030 target is not a problem.

"The China space program is far more advanced than most people realize," Mr Musk said in his tweet.

His tweet comes days after Lin Xiqiang, deputy director of the China Manned Space Agency, said at a press conference that China's space authorities "have launched the manned lunar programme" and "plan to send astronauts to the moon before 2030".

Mr Musk, meanwhile, landed in Beijing on Tuesday morning on his private jet, according to news agency Reuters. This is the billionaire's first trip to China in three years - he danced on stage during an event at Tesla's Shanghai factory in early 2020.

During the visit, Mr Musk is expected to meet senior Chinese officials and visit Tesla's Shanghai plant, the news agency further said.

Tesla, however, has not issued any statement on whether its CEO arrived in China.

But Mr Musk's private jet, a 2015 Gulfstream G650ER, was shown leaving Alaska on Tuesday morning Asia time before crossing over Japan and South Korea, according to ADS-B Exchange, a flight aggregation website.

China is Tesla's second-largest market after the US, and the Shanghai plant is the electric car maker's largest production hub.

China's Youth Unemployment Hits Record High At 20.4 Per Cent In April: Report

China released official statistics showing that the unemployment rate for people aged between 16-24 years in the country had touched a record high of 20.4 per cent in April, Khabarhub reported.

The statistics have been released just one month before another 11.6 million students will graduate from college and vocational schools and all set to enter the job market. China imposed lockdowns under the government's zero-COVID policy and economically damaging than other nations' containment policies, Nancy Qian, Professor of Economics at Northwestern University said in the KhabarHub report.

As per the news report, China's economic recovery has lagged behind others. For comparison, the US youth employment rate reached 14.85 per cent at its pandemic peak in 2020 before reducing to 9.57 per cent in 2021, Nepal-based Khabarhub reported. The youth employment rate in the US today stands at 6.5 per cent.

Most of the pandemic-related obstacles to employment in China have been lifted. However, the fundamental conditions for reducing the youth employment rate in China are not improving. Research has also showcased that youth unemployment depresses lifetime earnings, as it means that young people are missing important opportunities to develop skills, as per the news report.

The news report has cited many reasons for this. However, one key is the large gap between the "reservation wage" rate that young graduates are ready to accept and the salary that firms are willing to pay. This mismatch indicates the extent to which the cost of living has exceeded the growth in salaries.

According to a 2021 survey, jobs for new graduates in big cities like Shanghai and Beijing paid an average of only USD 749 per month. The money is just enough to rent a 269 square feet apartment. The young people can see that a job with such a low starting pay is unlikely to provide the income progression needed to support a family ten years down the line.

Since urban white-collar workers are typically expected to work from 9 am to 9 pm six days a week and a couple who is working and has a child relies heavily on a nanny. In Shanghai and Beijing, nannies who often have not graduated from high school, earn CNY 6,000 per month on average which is more than recent college graduates.

One might think why fresh graduates do not move to smaller cities with lower living costs. However, the move for Chinese workers is much costlier as the amenities in smaller cities tend to be substantially worse than in large cities, as per the Khabarhub report. Some parts of Chinese first-tier cities feel more affluent than even New York or Tokyo. It is no wonder that majority of the college graduates avoid shifting to these more "affordable" areas. Instead, the graduates depend on their parents to help cover basic costs.

In 2014, a national survey revealed that around 30 per cent of Chinese college graduates continued to live with their parents, as per the news report. While some young workers cannot get by without their parents' support and others are opting not to work as their parents can afford to support them.

China needs not only more jobs but also high-paying jobs, Khabarhub reported. The Chinese economy urgently requires new cohorts of highly productive workers to help sustain a rapidly growing elderly population.

US Retailer Target Loses $10 Billion Amid Pride Merchandising Controversy

US retailer Target has lost $10 billion in market valuation in 10 days over controversy around its Pride-themed clothing for children. The department store chain has been facing boycott calls from people across the US after some videos claimed to show onesies and other dresses meant for toddlers and other children. From $160.96 a share, the value of Target's stock plummeted to $138.93. According to Fox News, the shares have slipped more than 12 per cent since the controversy erupted more than a week ago.

Fox News also said that Target shares have fallen for six consecutive sessions - their longest losing streak since December 2022.

"For more than a decade, Target has offered an assortment of products aimed at celebrating Pride Month. Since introducing this year's collection, we've experienced threats impacting our team members' sense of safety and well-being while at work," a company spokesperson told Fox News.

"Given these volatile circumstances, we are making adjustments to our plans, including removing items that have been at the centre of the most significant confrontational behaviour. Our focus now is on moving forward with our continuing commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community and standing with them as we celebrate Pride Month and throughout the year," the spokesperson added.

Target has nearly 2,000 stores across the US.

The last time the company saw its stocks drop this big was during the Covid-19 pandemic.

There were protests at some of its stores in southern America after which it removed the clothes from the display, New York Post said in its report.

Among the ones that garnered the most attention were "tuck-friendly" women's swimsuits and rainbow-themed children's clothing.

'Shraddha The Reason Behind Rain In IPL Final', Says Fan. Actress Reacts

Heavy rain and thunderstorms in Ahmedabad on Sunday forced the Indian Premier League final between holders Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings into a reserve day for the first time in the competition's history. Fans had arrived at the venue in big numbers, looking to watch the legendary MS Dhoni in action, potentially for the last time. But, rain played spoilsport, with not a single delivery being possible. As chatter on the washed-out fixture flooded social media, a fan blamed actress Shraddha Kapoor for the rain at the venue.

Shraddha, who was a part of the Jio Cinema panel for the IPL 2023 final, even took to Instagram and shared the fan's comments. Fair to say that she found the fan's take truly amusing.

3b5rtqo

Rain began 35 minutes before the toss and went on for over two hours and 40 minutes before it stopped and raised hopes for the game to begin at the world's biggest cricket stadium.

But a second downpour washed out the day, leaving thousands of fans, who had taken shelter in the covered areas of the 132,000-seater stadium, disappointed.

The ground was a sorry soggy sight when officials called off play for the day and a message on the giant screen, for the fans, read "please keep your physical tickets safe!".

The action will begin on Monday with an IPL final heading for a reserve day for the first time in its 16-year-long history.

The weather department of the western city predicts a slim (10 percent) chance for evening rains on Monday as well.

The match is believed to be Chennai skipper M. S. Dhoni's last as a player and fans turned up in numbers wearing the yellow jersey of the superstar cricketer.

Chennai will be aiming for a record-equalling fifth title to go level with IPL powerhouse Mumbai Indians, led by all-format India captain Rohit Sharma.

Dhoni has led his team to their 10th IPL final including four trophies and five runners-up finishes.

Gujarat, captained by Hardik Pandya, have extended their fairytale journey which began with a title win in their debut season last year at the same venue.

The T20 competition, which began in 2008, has grown into the world's richest cricket tournament and a huge revenue earner for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Belarusian President Rushed To Hospital After Meeting With Putin: Report

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko was taken to a hospital in Moscow after meeting his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Newsweek reported citing the Belarusian opposition leader.

Claiming that Lukashenko was in critical condition at the Central Clinical Hospital of Moscow, Belarus 2020 presidential candidate Valery Tsepkalo, in a Saturday Telegram post, said that the information his team obtained required further information and that it had not been confirmed, American weekly news magazine Newsweek reported.

"According to the information we have, which requires additional confirmation, Lukashenko after a meeting with Putin behind closed doors, was urgently taken to the Central Clinical Hospital of Moscow, where he is currently staying," Tsepkalo said in a Telegram post.

"The best specialists were sent to return him (Lukashenko) from a condition assessed by doctors as critical," he added.

Tsepkalo's message on Telegram further said, "The organized measures to rescue the Belarusian dictator were aimed at averting speculation about the possible involvement of the Kremlin in his poisoning." He said that doctors have warned of a possible recurrence of relapses, as per the news report.

According to the Newsweek, rumours around Lukashenko's health have been doing the rounds in the weeks after his appearance at the Victory Day celebration in Moscow's Red Square on May 9. However, Lukashenko, who has led Belarus since 1994, dismissed the rumours and said, "I'm not going to die guys."

Last week, Russia signed a deal with the Lukashenko government to formalise the deployment of tactical nuclear missiles in Belarus, the Russian news agency TASS reported.

The Defence ministers of Russia and Belarus signed the documents defining the procedures for storing Russian nuclear weapons at a special facility on Belarusian territory, the Belarusian Defense Ministry reported.

"During the meeting, documents determining the procedure for keeping Russian non-strategic nuclear weapons in a special storage facility on the territory of the Republic of Belarus were signed," the ministry's press service said.

The measures taken by Russia and Belarus "comply with all existing international legal obligations," it stressed. The defence ministers discussed the current military and political situation and issues of military and technical cooperation between the two countries.

"I Cheekily...": Varun Gandhi Shares Selfies From New Parliament Building

BJP MP Varun Gandhi shared two selfies with his mother and colleague Maneka Gandhi from the new parliament building that was inaugurated today.

"On this historic occasion of the inauguration of our new Parliamentary complex, I cheekily requested the most senior member of the current Lok Sabha for a couple of selfies together," tweeted Mr Gandhi.

While Varun Gandhi is an MP from Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh, his mother represents Sultanpur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi this morning inaugurated the new parliament building in a grand ceremony that witnessed participation from 25 parties.

The event was boycotted by 20 opposition parties who accused the Prime Minister of sidelining President Droupadi Murmu.

A puja and a multi-faith prayer meeting was also held to mark the opening of the new parliament building, which the PM called a symbol of the aspirations of 140 crore Indians.

He also installed a historic sceptre 'Sengol' in the Lok Sabha chamber, near the Speaker's chair.

Cannes: Sunny's Gratitude Note For Daniel Who "Literally" Saved Her Life

Actress Sunny Leone is on cloud nine. The reason? Her film Kennedy, directed by Anurag Kashyap, was screened at the Midnights Screening Section of the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. The actress has been treating fans to regular updates from the prestigious event on Instagram. However, her latest Cannes post is a rather special one as it is a gratitude note addressed to her husband Daniel Weber. The note is attached to a video of the couple sharing a kiss on the Cannes red carpet. In the caption, she said, “God sent you Daniel Weber into my life at my lowest moment. In that moment you literally saved my life and have been by my side since. 15 years of togetherness! Without you, this moment in @festivaldecannes would never have happened. Your continuous fight to propel me forward and help me follow my dreams is truly selflessness to another level. I love you and thank you!”

In response, Daniel Weber wrote, “You earned everything you have achieved.  With or without me. I love you. It's just the beginning.” He also added heart and clap emojis.

Previously, Sunny Leone had shared images with director Anurag Kashyap and co-star Rahul Bhat, posing on the red carpet at Cannes. She wrote in the caption, “The proudest moment of my career so far! Thank you, Anurag Kashyap, for this moment! And Rahul Bhat for letting me share the screen with you in this amazing performance! Love you both.”

About the film, NDTV's Saibal Chatterjee wrote, “It [Kennedy] seems to skim the surface and refrains from going the whole hog with its political allusions. But Kennedy does give us a central character who intrigues and excites thanks to the power Rahul Bhat lends to it. Sunny Leone's laugh - more a sharp elongated squeal than a pure guffaw/giggle - is the defining trait of the character she plays. Wish there was more to her. But it is definitely good to see the actor being used for something beyond just as a means of titillation. She makes the most of the opportunity. Mohit Takalkar, Shrikant Yadav, and Megha Burman also stand out.

Sunny Leone and Daniel Weber have been married since 2011. The couple has three children.
