India Abstains On UN Resolution Regarding 'Violation' Of Palestinian Rights

India has abstained in the UN General Assembly on a resolution that asked the International Court of Justice for its opinion on the legal consequences of Israel's "prolonged occupation" and annexation of the Palestinian territory.

The draft resolution 'Israeli practices affecting the human rights of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem' was adopted by a recorded vote on Friday, with 87 votes in favour, 26 against, and 53 abstentions, including by India.

The resolution decided to request the UN's highest judicial body to "render an advisory opinion" on "what are the legal consequences arising from the ongoing violation by Israel of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, from its prolonged occupation, settlement and annexation of the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including measures aimed at altering the demographic composition, character and status of the Holy City of Jerusalem, and from its adoption of related discriminatory legislation and measures."

It also asked the Hague-based top UN court, "how do the policies and practices of Israel... affect the legal status of the occupation, and what are the legal consequences that arise for all States and the United Nations from this status?" The US and Israel voted against the resolution, while Brazil, Japan, Myanmar, and France were among those that abstained.

Before the vote, Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, said that the "outrageous resolution" calling for the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice is a "moral stain on the UN and every country that supports it. No international body can decide that the Jewish people are "occupiers" in their own homeland. Any decision from a judicial body which receives its mandate from the morally bankrupt and politicised UN is completely illegitimate." Mr Erdan added that the decision to hold a vote that deals with Israel on Shabbat is another example of the "moral decay" of the UN, which prevents Israel's position from being heard in a vote whose results are predetermined.

He added that at the UN General Assembly High-Level Week in September 2021, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas announced in his remarks that if Israel did not withdraw to the 1967 lines within a year, the Palestinians would turn to The Hague. "Today's vote is the realisation of Abbas's ultimatum," he said.

Following the vote, World Jewish Congress President Ronald S Lauder said in a statement that the vote at the United Nations exemplifies an ongoing pattern of bias against Israel, and "we applaud those 26 countries, including the United States, who voted against this shameful resolution that seeks to isolate and demonise the Jewish state."Mr Lauder said the "measure is a direct outgrowth of the biased Commission of Inquiry on Israel, whose commissioners have made antisemitic comments and who have been unabashed critics of Israel. Referral of this issue to the ICJ is yet another barrier to dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians."

Mr Lauder said peace in the region "can only be negotiated by the two sides directly involved." World Jewish Congress is an international organisation representing Jewish communities in more than 100 countries to governments, parliaments, and international organisations.

Redmi K60 Cooling Case Said to Reduce Maximum Temperature by 4 Degrees Celsius

Redmi K60 series was launched in China on Tuesday. This flagship lineup includes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 series-powered Redmi K60 and Redmi K60 Pro, and the Redmi K60E featuring a MediaTek Dimensity 8200 SoC. They are equipped with a 17-layer heat liquid cooling VC dissipation system that is said to offer up to 15 percent improved thermal conductivity than the previous generation. Xiaomi has also released a cooling case for the Redmi K60 series which is supposedly capable of further reducing the maximum temperature by up to 4 degrees Celsius.

According to a post by a digital blogger on Weibo, the Redmi K60 Series Ice Cooling Case can reduce the handset's maximum temperature by up to 4 degrees Celsius. This case is available to purchase for CNY 79 (roughly Rs. 1,000).

Xiaomi says that this cooling case is equipped with a phase-changing material that purportedly switches between solid and liquid states depending on the smartphone's temperature to dissipate heat efficiently. This is said to be especially effective when the device is being used at its full power or for an extended period.

The cooling is said to take place immediately. Xiaomi says that this case is ideal for gaming or marathon streaming sessions. The Redmi K60 Series Ice Cooling Case also supports wireless charging. In addition, the case has a split-layer structure to protect the handset from any physical damage.

To recall, the Redmi K60 series was launched in China on Tuesday. Its top-of-the-line model is the Redmi K60 Pro, which is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. The smartphone features an Adreno GPU and Qualcomm AI Engine. It sports a 6.67-inch 2K AMOLED display with up to 120Hz refresh rate. This handset gets a 5,000mAh battery with support for 120W wired fast charging and 30W wireless fast charging.

Watch: Babar's Angry Look After Journalist's "Yeh Koi Tareeka Nahi " Barb

The first Test between Pakistan and New Zealand ended in a draw after bad light forced early stumps on Day 5. The hosts declared their innings after scoring 311/8, taking a 137-run lead. The major contributions were made by Imam-ul-Haq, who smashed 96 runs while Saud Shakeel and Sarfaraz Ahmed scored 55 not out and 53 runs respectively. In return, the visitors made a blistering start and they posted 61/1 before the game was called-off. The result of the two-match series will now be decided in the next game that starts on Monday.

However, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam got embroiled in a tense situation during the post-match press conference. As Babar was about to leave the press conference, a reporter got visibly irked after being ignored by the batter and yelled, "Ye koi tareeka nahi hain, yaha sawaal ke lie aapko ishaare kar rahe hain (This is not the way, I'm making repeated gestures to ask you a question)."

Babar did not take the statement lightly and gave back a death stare to the reporter before the media manager came and switched off the microphone.

Coming to the match, Ish Sodhi grabbed 6-86 and threatened to give New Zealand victory in the first two sessions on the fifth and final day, but Pakistan fought on before declaring their second innings at 311-8.

That gave New Zealand a tough target of 138 to win in 15 overs, and the chase ended in fading light on 61-1, with Tom Latham unbeaten on 35 and Devon Conway 18.

Michael Bracewell was the only wicket to fall for three.

Sodhi was the star as he improved on his previous best of 4-60 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo four years ago.

Australia To Celebrate First Restriction-Free New Year's Eve After 2 Years

Australia is gearing up to celebrate its first restriction-free New Year's Eve after two years of COVID disruptions, with more than a million revellers expected to flock to Sydney's harbourfront and watch an elaborate fireworks display.

Sydney is one of the world's first major cities to welcome in the New Year and draws huge TV audiences around the world, with a public countdown and fireworks display over its iconic Opera House.

Lockdowns at the end of 2020 and a surge in Omicron cases at the end of 2021 led to crowd restrictions and reduced festivities. However, curbs on celebrations have been lifted this year after Australia, like many countries around the world, re-opened its borders and removed social distancing restrictions.

"This New Year's Eve we are saying Sydney is back as we kick off festivities around the world and bring in the New Year with a bang," Clover Moore, Lord Mayor of Sydney, said.

"2022 has been another year of significant challenges as we continued working to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, but tonight we put the year behind us and look with hope to 2023."

A rainbow of colour will light up Sydney Harbour, with 2,000 fireworks to be launched from the four sails of the Sydney Opera House and 7,000 fireworks from more positions on the Sydney Harbour Bridge than ever before.

For the first time in 12 years, fireworks will be launched from four building rooftops to frame the spectacular show, the organisers said.

Prior to the pandemic, over a million people would join the festivities on the ground in Sydney as a billion spectators tuned in from other parts of the world.

Italy To Test Flyers From China As 50% Of Passengers In Milan Test +ve

Italian health authorities will begin testing all arrivals from China for Covid after almost half of the passengers on two flights to Milan were found to have the virus.

They are also sequencing the Milan tests to see if there are new variants, the Health Ministry said in a statement. If a new strain is found, officials may impose stricter curbs on travel from the country.

China has seen outbreaks of the virus since the government there abandoned its strict zero-Covid policies. Uncertainty over the scale of the spread has prompted countries, including the US, to consider new restrictions on entry.

Italy's government is set to discuss the Milan passenger numbers at a cabinet meeting later Wednesday, when Health Minister Orazio Schillaci may present information on the tests.

Most of those who tested positive weren't showing symptoms. But local media reported that there's increasing concern among health officials about new Covid variants emerging from China.

Italy was the first European country to be hit hard by Covid in early 2020.

While the high rate of passengers with the virus has put authorities on alert, one factor in Italy's favor is its high vaccination rate.

More than 80% of people are fully inoculated, according to the World Health Organization, and many have also received booster shots. It's a similar story across much of Western Europe.

Elsewhere, the UK said it will ensure it has the necessary Covid surveillance in place, but doesn't have plans to introduce mandatory testing on arrivals from China.

In Germany, health authorities are "closely watching" the situation, according to Health Ministry spokesman Sebastian Guelde.

"We have no indication that a more dangerous mutation has developed in China that would give rise to a declaration of a virus variant area, which would result in corresponding travel restrictions," he added.

The French health ministry is also monitoring developments, and said it's "ready to look at all useful measures that could be put in place as a consequence, in collaboration with France's European partners."

Myanmar's Suu Kyi Convicted Of Corruption, Jailed For 7 Years: Report

A Myanmar junta court sentenced ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi to seven years in prison for corruption on Friday, a legal source told AFP, ending the 18-month trial of the Nobel laureate.

Suu Kyi was jailed on five counts of corruption related to the hiring, purchase and maintaining of a helicopter that had caused a "loss to the state", the source said.

A prisoner of the military since the 2021 coup, Suu Kyi, 77, has been convicted on every charge levelled against her, ranging from corruption to illegally possessing walkie-talkies and violating Covid restrictions.

"All her cases were finished and there are no more charges against her," said the source, who requested anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to the media.

Suu Kyi -- who has now been jailed for 33 years -- appeared in good health, the source added.

Journalists have been barred from attending the court hearings and Suu Kyi's lawyers have been banned from speaking to the media.

Since her trial began, she has been seen only once -- in grainy state media photos from a bare courtroom -- and has been reliant on lawyers to relay messages to the world.

Many in Myanmar's democracy struggle, which she has dominated for decades, have abandoned her core principle of non-violence, with "People's Defence Forces" clashing regularly with the military across the country.

Last week, the United Nations Security Council called on the junta to release Suu Kyi in its first resolution on the situation in Myanmar since the coup.

It was a moment of relative unity by the council after permanent members and close junta allies China and Russia abstained, opting not to wield vetoes following amendments to the wording.

Turmoil

The military alleged widespread voter fraud during the November 2020 election, won resoundingly by Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party, although international observers said the poll was largely free and fair.

The junta has since cancelled the result and said it uncovered more than 11 million instances of voter fraud.

Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military seized power, ending the Southeast Asian nation's brief experiment with democracy and sparking huge protests.

The junta has responded with a crackdown that rights groups say includes razing villages, mass extrajudicial killings and airstrikes on civilians.

More than one million people have been displaced since the coup, according to the United Nations children's agency.

Xiaomi 13 Ultra Tipped to Get a Vastly Improved Periscope Camera

Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro powered by Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC were launched in China earlier this month. The Chinese tech giant is now expected to bring the Xiaomi 13 lineup to the global markets next year. The Xiaomi 13 Ultra is also believed to be a part of the global lineup. A reliable tipster has now claimed that its periscope camera's performance will "shock everyone." There is not much else known about this handset at this point, however, rumours suggest that it could come with high-speed LPDDR5x RAM and UFS 4.0 storage.

According to a post by tipster Kartikey Singh (Twitter: @That_Kartikey), the Xiaomi 13 Ultra will come with a vastly improved periscope camera. He had previously claimed that Samsung had gone complacent when it comes to the camera zoom capabilities of the Galaxy S series.

Singh believes that in 2023 Samsung could be outdone by one of its competitors. However, the tipster did not delve into any specific details about the Xiaomi 13 Ultra's periscope camera. We can expect this upcoming Xiaomi smartphone to offer better camera zoom performance than the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which comes with 3x and 10x optical zoom capabilities.

In related news, tipster Digital Chat Station has shared the alleged storage and memory configuration details of the Xiaomi 13 Ultra. This smartphone could come with 16GB of LPDDR5x RAM and 512GB or 1TB of UFS 4.0 onboard storage.

Xiaomi had recently launched the Xiaomi 13 series in China, including the vanilla Xiaomi 13 and the Xiaomi 13 Pro. In terms of camera, the Pro model gets a triple rear camera setup headlined by a 50-megapixel 1-inch Sony IMX989 primary sensor. There is also a 50-megapixel floating 75mm telephoto sensor and a 50-megapixel wide-angle sensor. It also features a 32-megapixel selfie camera on the front.

Bahamas Regulator Holds FTX Assets Pending Delivery To Customers

The Securities Commission of the Bahamas said on Thursday that it is holding FTX assets worth $3.5 billion based on market pricing at the time of transfer on a temporary basis to deliver them to customers and creditors who own them.

FTX's Bahamas unit's digital assets were transferred to digital wallets under the exclusive control of the commission in November soon after the company and its hedge fund Alameda Research and dozens of affiliates filed for US bankruptcy.

Upon completion of the transfer, FTX founders Sam Bankman-Fried and Gary Wang no longer had access to the tokens that were transferred or frozen, the executive director of the commission, Christina Rolle, said in an affidavit filed with the Bahamas Supreme Court.

"All transferred assets were and remain under the sole control of the commission," Rolle said.

Lawyers for crypto exchange FTX earlier this month opposed a demand for internal records from its Bahamian business, saying they "do not trust" the Bahamian government with data that could be used to siphon off assets from the bankrupt company.

The authorities in the Bahamas, where the company had its headquarters, appointed liquidators to wind down FTX's international trading business soon after the company announced bankruptcy.

China Set to Launch State-Backed NFT Marketplace on Special ‘Cultural Protection’ Chain

China, that is rather infamous for keeping an extremely restrictive approach towards the crypto sector, is taking small steps into exploring the digital assets sector. The country is geared-up to launch an official, state-backed NFT marketplace, that would let Chinese NFT traders to dabble in the space, but under the oversight of China's government. A launch ceremony for this marketplace has been slated for January 1. It will be held in China's capital city of Beijing at a time when the country is yet again, riddled with the COVID-19 crisis.

Called the ‘China Digital Asset Trading Platform', the initiative is aimed at creating a safe ecosystem for the secondary sales of NFTs, which if not monitored, can dangerously expose buyers to hack attacks and scams.

Three state-owned entities — China Technology Exchange, China Cultural Relics Exchange Center, and Huaban Digital Copyright Service Center Co., Ltd — have collectively created this NFT trading platforms, keeping it in alignment with China's laws and regulations, China's Sina News said in its report.

Instead of using an existing blockchain like Ethereum or Solana, the Chinese government has decided to base this NFT platform on a specially curated blockchain, named the ‘China Cultural Heritage Chain'.

The blockchain was reportedly initiated by the China Cultural Relics Exchange Center, aimed at ensuring the copyright protection of the cultural digital sector.

In September last year, China imposed a blanket ban on all crypto-related activities.

The government at the time, had not decided a concrete stance on the categorisation of NFTs.

In this grey zone, the secondary sales of digital collectibles had begun to pick pace in China.

In March this year, WeChat public accounts linked to NFT trading, were blocked by its parent company Tencent.

“In order to prevent the risk of virtual currency trading speculation, the WeChat public platform has recently standardised and rectified public accounts and small programs for speculation and secondary sales of digital collections,” WeChat had said in a statement at the time.

Despite increasing the oversight on the virtual assets sector, China is gradually tapping in to explore the potential of the blockchain technology.

The country is already widely testing its e-CNY CBDC, which is a blockchain representation of China's fiat currency.

This week, the Chinese authorities introduced a feature for existing CBDC users to let them send financial gifts to their friends and family as ‘red packets'. Considered as a symbol of ‘good luck', the ‘red packets' — also called the ‘Hongbao' — are used for presenting people with money as a gesture of luck around festivals in the Asian nation.

China is still not onboard with allowing cryptocurrencies to penetrate its financial systems.

Along with the volatility of the crypto sector and the anonymity of transactions crypto offers, the electricity required to keep crypto-related operations up and running had become a matter of concern for the Chinese authorities before all activities around that sector was banned.

Video: Massive Fire At Columbia Hotel, People Jump From Windows To Escape

A fire at a casino complex at Cambodia's border with Thailand has killed 10 people, with more than 50 injured. Several photos and videos posted on social media show people desperately huddled on ledges and hanging out of windows in a bid to escape. More than a dozen people are on life support, according to news agency AFP.

The fire at Grand Diamond City hotel-casino in Poipet, on the Thailand border, started just before midnight on Wednesday, according to the police. Around 400 people were in the building when it caught fire, the police further said.

One of the videos shows people plunging to the ground below after jumping from the building in a desperate bid to escape. Those people were stuck on the fifth floor, as per a report in Metro.

The exact cause of the fire is still not known, the outlet further said.

Sky News spoke to John Sagun who works at the Holiday Palace Hotel, which is behind the Grand Diamond City Casino.

He said he had initially thought the building of his hotel was on fire but later got to know that the blaze broke out in the neighbouring building.

"At around 2-3am my boss told me to evacuate our staff and then I left the office to see what had happened. When I was outside, I was shocked to see it burning," he said.

The man also claimed that 40 to 50 people were trapped on the 17th floor of the casino, which has a sky bar called G360.

Authorities in neighbouring Thai province of Sa Kaeo said more than 50 people have been hospitalized there.

A Thai foreign ministry source told news agency AFP that they had been coordinating closely with local authorities, "including by sending in firetrucks from the Thai side".

The citizens of Cambodia are officially barred from gambling in its casinos. There are numerous hotel-casinos clustered along the Thai border, with Poipet a popular holiday destination for visitors from Thailand, where most forms of gambling are also illegal.

Kids Of Indian-American Couple Who Drowned In Frozen Lake With Authorities

The two minor daughters of an Indian-American couple, who drowned after they fell through the ice while walking on a frozen lake, are under the custody of the child safety department in the US state of Arizona.

A day after Christmas, 49-year-old Narayana Muddana and his wife, Haritha Muddana, and their 47-year-old friend Gokul Mediseti, drowned at Woods Canyon Lake in Coconino County in the US state of Arizona.

They fell through the ice while walking on a frozen lake to get some pictures.

By the time someone got cell service up the hill and first responders arrived with their limited cold water rescue resources, it was too late, ABC15.com reported.

Rescuers pulled Haritha from the water, but she was pronounced dead. The two men were found the next day.

The Arizona Department of Child Safety had to be called on Monday to come out to Forest Lakes and take custody of the orphaned girls, ages 7 and 12.

"You never get used to it. Especially when you're dealing with the children," said Jon Paxton with the Coconino County Sheriff's Office (CCSO).

"We wanted to make sure they felt as safe as possible. Tried to keep them warm and away from the scene as best we could," he added.

On December 26, three families - comprising six adults and five kids - drove up from the Valley to enjoy the snowy outdoors.

"(They) Wanted to get some pictures out on the ice," said Paxton.

During the photograph out on the ice, three persons fell through and into the minus 30-degree water.

According to a statement released by officials with CCSO, "deputies stationed at a substation in the area were called to the lake after two men and a woman were walking on the frozen lake and fell through the ice." Meanwhile, the community is mourning and coming together to support the two families torn apart by an expected tragedy, the report added.

"He's a very fun, loving guy. He's very kind at heart. Loved his kids" said Kishore Pittala, Narayana's next-door neighbour and close friend.

He told ABC15 the Muddana family invited his family to Woods Canyon Lake a few days ago.

"On Sunday night he sent me the link. 'Hey, we are heading out to this place. Do you want to join?' I said, 'No, I was already tired.'" But two other families joined the Muddanas who were celebrating Haritha's birthday, the report added.

"A total of 11 people went there, and as you know, two families got impacted," said Venkat Kommineni, President of the Arizona Telugu Association.

The parents, Narayana Rao and Haritha, fell into the icy water along with their friend Gokul, who leaves behind a wife and one daughter.

"I was in shock," said Kishore. "I don't understand, did this really happen for a moment?" Venkat told ABC15 he was surprised by how many people have attempted to help the girls directly.

"I think five people reached out to me saying, 'Are these kids up for adoption? We would like to take care of their life.'" More than USD 500,000 has been raised through a GoFundMe fundraiser for the families impacted.

"The money is going to go (in) the name of the kids - for their education, for their future, whatever they need to do in life," said Venkat.

Woods Canyon Lake is located east of Payson in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. It is an area popular among hikers, anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts.

More than one million Americans and Canadians are facing problems as a massive winter storm continues to pummel North America.

A bomb cyclone, when atmospheric pressure plummets, has brought snow, strong winds and freezing temperatures. Nearly 250 million are affected, and at least 19 deaths have been linked to the storm that extends more than 3,200km from Quebec to Texas.

Watch: Babar Azam Is Frustrated After Falling Into Tim Southee's Trap

Pakistan were all out for 438 Tuesday in the first innings of their Test against New Zealand in Karachi. Middle-order batter Agha Salman scored a maiden century before being last man out on 103 after Pakistan resumed on 317-5. Skipper Babar Azam fell in the first over of the day without adding to his overnight score of 161. For New Zealand, fast bowler Tim Southee took 3-69, completing 350 Test wickets in his 89th Test.

Fast bowler Tim Southee forced an edge off Azam's bat off the fourth ball of the day to wicketkeeper Tom Blundell to give a kickstart to New Zealand. Azam struck 16 boundaries and a six in his 365-minute knock.

Watch: Babar Azam Is Frustrated After Falling Into Tim Southee's Trap

The highlight of Pakistan's batting was 103 by Agha Salman, who anchored the innings after skipper Babar's dismissal. Salman hit 17 boundaries during his 155-ball knock.

Pakistan also lost Nauman Ali (seven) and Mohammad Wasim (two) in the first session, which produced just 60 runs. Salman added 54 runs for the seventh wicket before New Zealand took two wickets in the space of three runs. Pacer Neil Wagner had Nauman caught off a short-pitched delivery before Wasim was caught behind off spinner Ish Sodhi.

Salman then cut loose, hitting two successive boundaries off Sodhi to complete three figures. His previous best of 62 was against Sri Lanka at Galle in July.

Southee, who finished with 3-69, finally ended the innings by trapping Salman leg before, completing 350 wickets in his 89th Test. He is the third New Zealand bowler behind Richard Hadlee (431 in 86 Tests) and Daniel Vettori (362 in 113) to take 350 or more wickets in Tests.

Delhi Government Said to Use DMRC Electric Bus Fleet to Improve Last-Mile Connectivity

Delhi government will soon take over the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) electric bus fleet to strengthen the last-mile connectivity across the city.

The Delhi Cabinet recently took the decision to take over 100 existing E-buses and also operate additional 380 feeder E-buses under the transport department in 2023.

DMRC has been operating feeder E-buses in East and North clusters since December 2019, from Shastri Park and Majlis Park depots. Now, these buses will be run by the transport department through Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS).

In addition, for the operation of additional 380 electric buses, six stations have been identified - Welcome, Kohat Enclave, Rithala, Nangloi, Mundka and Dwarka. DMRC will be constructing the bus depots at these locations. The transport department shall operate all these feeder buses per a kilometre basis, which means the operators will be paid by the distance covered during the day.

The proposal comes as a part of the recommendation provided by the Route Rationalisation Study conducted by the transport department. In October, the first phase of the study was implemented with the standard (12 metres) buses operating across 26 new routes including Trunk (2), Central Business District (CBD) (3), Primary (18) and Airport routes (3) with a frequency of 5 to 20 mins during the peak hours.

The study recommended using Mini/Midi buses to operate in the areas where the 12-meter-long DTC and cluster buses cannot operate due to the smaller width of the road or the passenger load not being very high. In these routes and to serve rural parts of Delhi, operating smaller-size buses offers better financial sustainability and convenience to the commuters, connecting their areas to nearby transit hubs.

On the development, Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said in a statement, "With a good response received from the implementation of the pilot of Route Rationalisation Study, these new smaller size electric feeder buses will further boost the last mile connectivity for the people.'"

He further said, "A comprehensive study helped us understand the actual origin and destination of the bus commuters in the city, which led to designing new routes with a faster frequency of a bus in the required areas. We are also ensuring that all new buses being added in the city are electric in a bid to make our public transport completely pollution free."

"If Mother, Sister Can't...": Afghan Professor Tears Up Diplomas On TV

A Kabul University professor tore up his diplomas on live television, saying he does not accept this education if his "mother and sister can't study".

A clip from the TV show, now viral, shows the professor holding up his diplomas one by one. He then tears them up one by one.

Shabnam Nasimi, former policy advisor to the Minister for Afghan Resettlement & Minister for Refugees, "Astonishing scenes as a Kabul university professor destroys his diplomas on live TV in Afghanistan."

"From today I don't need these diplomas anymore because this country is no place for an education. If my sister & my mother can't study, then I DON'T accept this education," she quoted the professor as saying. Nasimi currently works as executive director of Conservative Friends of Afghanistan, a group that exists to promote understanding and support for Afghanistan in the United Kingdom.

In August last year, Taliban recaptured Afghanistan two decades after they had been driven out by US forces in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

Soon after they seized power, Taliban leaders promised a softer rule. However, their actions revealed otherwise as restrictions made their way into every aspect of women's lives.

Last week, the Taliban government banned university education for women across Afghanistan, drawing widespread criticism.

"You all are informed to immediately implement the mentioned order of suspending education of females until further notice," Minister for Higher Education Neda Mohammad Nadeem said in a letter issued to all government and private universities.

The ban followed several changes in university rules, including gender-segregated classrooms and entrances. Also, women were only permitted to be taught by women professors or old men.

Most teenage girls across the country have already been banned from secondary school education, severely limiting university intake.

56 Killed Over 4 Days Of Ethnic Fighting In South Sudan

Clashes have killed 56 people during four days of fighting in South Sudan's eastern Jonglei state, after youth from the Nuer community attacked another ethnic group, a local official said on Tuesday, with the Nuer making up most of the casualties.

The territory of South Sudan, which gained independence from Sudan in 2011, has been plagued by blood feuds and clashes over cattle and land for decades.

Armed Nuer youth began attacking the Murle community on Dec. 24 in Gumuruk County and Likuangole County, said Abraham Kelang, a government official in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area.

"The government is managing to help the communities, but the fighting is still ongoing," Kelang told Reuters by telephone.

He said 51 of those killed were Nuer attackers, with only five Murle defenders killed.

Last week, the United Nations peacekeeping mission (UNMISS) said armed Nuer youth were being mobilised ahead of a potential raid against the Murle.

UNMISS said it was monitoring the escalation of tensions and violence, and had intensified patrols in and around affected areas.

North Korea's Weapons Programme Defies Covid Outbreak

North Korea forged ahead with its missile programme in 2022 and took steps toward resuming testing of nuclear bombs, as world events including the COVID pandemic and war fractured the already tenuous international pressure against it.

The country acknowledged its first COVID-19 outbreak in May, prolonging already stringent border closures and other anti-pandemic measures, blocking international engagement and causing economic problems, but doing little to slow its weapons tests.

The true extent of COVID there remains unconfirmed amid a lack of testing and independent monitoring.

This year provided the clearest evidence yet that North Korea now regards itself as a permanent nuclear weapons power and that Pyongyang has no intention of engaging the United States in denuclearisation talks, said Evans Revere, a former U.S. diplomat.

"We are in dangerous and uncharted territory when it comes to the North Korean threat," he said. "The possibility of denuclearising North Korea has all but disappeared."

North Korea resumed testing intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) for the first time since 2017, successfully launching the massive new Hwasong-17, which is believed to have the range to strike anywhere in the United States.

Pyongyang rolled out a series of increasingly capable short-range missiles as well, in what it says is a strategy to deploy tactical nuclear weapons.

North Korea also made preparations to reopen its shuttered nuclear test site, raising the prospect of a new nuclear bomb test for the first time since 2017.

With the world distracted by the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, and rising competition between Washington and Beijing, the testing seems aimed at making real strides in enhancing the country's military power, analysts said.

"North Korea could at least pretended that it was open to dialogue, but this hasn't been the case," said Ramon Pacheco Pardo, a Korea expert at King's College London. "I think that the Kim regime simply wants to improve its capabilities, no matter the consequences."

WHY IT MATTERS

North Korea has for years been banned from conducting nuclear tests and ballistic missile launches by the United Nations Security Council, which had strengthened sanctions on Pyongyang.

In May, however, China and Russia vetoed a U.S.-led push to impose more U.N. sanctions on North Korea, publicly splitting the council for the first time since it started punishing Pyongyang in 2006.

The United States and its allies in South Korea and Japan have since turned to displays of military force, including joint drills and deployments of U.S. aircraft carriers and long-range bombers, in a so-far futile effort to deter Pyongyang's testing.

North Korea's missile tests have allowed it to refine and in some cases operationally deploy new capabilities that enable the rapid and first use of nuclear weapons in the event of both conventional and nuclear attacks, said Duyeon Kim, of the U.S.-based Center for a New American Security.

"Tactical nuclear weapons are dangerous because they can start a war whether it's by miscalculation, retaliation, or preemption, and the threshold for nuclear-weapons use would be even lower," she said.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR 2023?

As North Korea opens up to trade and travel again it will likely continue to side with China and Russia and be less concerned with engagement with the United States and South Korea, Pacheco Pardo said.

If it's true that Pyongyang expects the pandemic to last through 2024, then next year may see continued tensions.

"We may see more weapons tests, chest-thumping posturing, and threats until it feels virus-safe to return to negotiations and readily armed with even more political leverage to extract big concessions or indefinite recognition as a nuclear power," Duyeon Kim said.
